Sunday afternoon as I returned from a bike ride a car was in my driveway in front of my garage. As I was trying to get bike in through the back gate (next to garage) I asked him to move back or I would hit the car .
I also told him he could not stay as it was blocking my garage (my car inside !)
Monday , I go to work (bike) and return and the car is still there - back window is open.
Contact non emergency police. Upload pics of it . Told they will attempt to contact owner . Next day they text to tell me council need to sort it.
I phone the council , fobbed off with them not taking action as it is on private land not a road !
The DVLA are not intetrested despite it being untaxed (as it is on private land)
Council are now saying they will stick an abandoned sticker on it giving the owner 7 days to return.
Meanwhile, doors hve been opened, car ransacked , fuse box nicked etc. Not by me.
How is it fair that I have to incur the cost of getting it towed away ?

Do I -
Somehow move the car on to the street - council will deal with it then (do not know how as no manual handbrake - it is a button ) and will I be committing a crime then ?

Pretend I have an emergency and get the police involved that way ? If indeed they would !!!!!!!
RANT OVER !!!!!!!!!

not checked the date of this

Rule 243: No Parking Across Driveways
According to Rule 243 of the Highway Code:
"Do not stop or park in front of an entrance to a property."
This means that it is not just a polite request but an expectation that drivers do not block access to driveways. Doing so can constitute an obstruction and can have legal consequences.
Legal Implications
If someone parks over your driveway and blocks you in or out, they may be committing an offense under certain circumstances:

  • Obstruction: Blocking a driveway can be considered an obstruction of the highway, which is an offense.
  • Local By-Laws: Specific local councils may have additional regulations against blocking driveways, which can also result in fines or penalties.
What Steps Can You Take? Here are the steps you can take if someone blocks your driveway:

Contact the Authorities
If the vehicle remains or the blockage is causing significant inconvenience, you can contact your local council or the police:

  • Local Council: Some councils have dedicated teams to handle parking issues, including driveway obstructions.
  • Police: If you are blocked in and need to get out urgently, the police may intervene under specific circumstances.

Get some nice strong neighbours to come and move it for you. I've seen cars moved by 4 people using a couple of trolley jacks!

60andcounting · 12/11/2025 17:37

Why don't you take the handbrake off and roll it away slowly.

ItsOnlyHobnobs · 12/11/2025 17:40

Did you say your car is parked in the garage? You can absolutely contact the police and say a vehicle has been abandoned and is blocking your exit.

Nope - they have told me the council deal with this stuff . Environmental Health will stick a sticker on it !
They checked and it isnt stolen and they have tried to contct owner. They will not do anymore

It is a button handbrake - not manual type !

It took over a year for our council to move a van which was blocking my neighbours driveway. They just kept adding stickers stating it must be moved within 7 days 🙈

Id call the police and say it needs to be moved asap as you have a family emergency and need out in your car which is blocked in.

ItsOnlyHobnobs · 12/11/2025 17:45

The important distinction to if the police will help is if your exit is blocked. Can you confirm if your car is in the garage?

Dollymylove · 12/11/2025 17:45

A couple of strong chaps, trolley jacks, and dump it in the road. It will soon get shifted. BTW, do you actually know who the car belongs to?

A year???????????? Thats DIRE !

Your suggestion is very tempting . I have ailing parents 4 hours away so it could be an option.
Being honest just does not pay off !

The whole cul de sac reported daily to the council as it was a battered old van, no tax, insurance or mot. We eventually got the local mp involved!

In these situations being honest certainly doesn’t help. The neighbour who’s drive it was blocking didn’t have a car, but her daily carers did, the ambulance transport for hospital appointments etc!

Nickyknackered · 12/11/2025 17:49

Goodness the reading and comprehension skills of people replying to the OP is awful!

Rosie8880 · 12/11/2025 17:51

Very unjust. Google who your local councillors are in your ward. Go onto the council website - find your councillor. You will see the email addresses on this. Google the local police station local ward Sargent and their email. Google neighbourhood manager, town centre manager, environmental heath, street safety team / officers.

write an email everyone on email above. Say the car has been abandoned, broken into and people are gathering outside your home and making you feel unsafe.
cc img ward councillors makes anything in council happen faster.

the long and short of it tho is that councils police have no money. Getting rid of s car costs money and if you want it gone asap you’ll probably need to pay for it to be moved / towed/ taken to the car crusher place or whatever it is called ;)

I'm a bit confused. Who did you speak to on Sunday? Was the owner in the process of leaving the car on your drive when you returned from your bike ride? Do you know who the owner is?

I’m also confused. If some random stranger is parked on your drive you tell them to move in no uncertain terms!

I do not know the owner . As he was in the driver's seat and reversed for me to get bike in , assumed he was leaving

Did you not ask him why he thought it acceptable to park on a private driveway in front of someone’s garage? I would have waited outside until he had moved it. I had some cheeky fucker park on my drive once, he never did it again.

DaisyChain505 · 12/11/2025 18:11

Why did you not have more of an issue with the owner when you arrived home and they were on your private drive way. It be telling them to get the F off and taking video evidence and phoning the police infront of them if they refused?

as for the situation now, I would be calling the police and telling them if they don’t come and get involved I will be lifting the handbrake and letting it roll off my driveway and then they’ll be forced to deal with it crashed in the middle of the road!

In hindsight , I should. I live alone and was wary of the confrontation.
The handbrake is not a manual one. It is a button - car key needed !!!!!

So to be clear… you car is in your garage but you can’t exit the garage because this car is parked outside it?

I still don't understand why you didn't tell him to get his car off your drive and wait to make sure he'd left or ask him what the hell he thought he was doing parking there in the first place. Do you live near an airport or train station? Have you asked if any of the neighbours know whose car it is? Is it common where you live for cars on driveways to be ransacked? You don't seem surprised this has happened.

Goodnightreps · 12/11/2025 18:27

what kind of an area do you live in that this happened within a day of it being parked on your driveway?

ItsOnlyHobnobs · 12/11/2025 18:27

Honestly, phone the police again in a panic and say an unknown abandoned vehicle is blocking your exit, you are stuck and need to travel to your elderly parents urgently.

Don’t talk about the council, keep repeating its obstructing your vehicle/exit. It is a police issue! Don’t let them fob you off.
