It's dark, rainy and I have a rotten cold. I've just made a big pan of vegetable and lentil soup.
It really hit the spot!

Yabu.

Soup Is not food.

lol…you sound like my mum! 🥰

From September to about March I make a batch of soup every monday and have it for my lunch. This week's soup is carrot and coriander. I must confess to taking both crusty ends off the wholemeal loaf today (but its the best bit).
Bit of a marmite thing on here but I bought a soup maker this year as due to my disabilities the stick blender was getting difficult to use and its made it so much easier. I have a large one which will make 5 portions. Would definitely recommend if you eat a lot of soup.

00PrettyHateMachine00 · 12/11/2025 14:59

No, thanks. There's no meat, therefore, it's not food. Water, with a bit of veg and some lentils. I'd only eat that if that's all I could afford or if there's zombie apocalypse.

lazyarse123 · 12/11/2025 15:11

I actually like own brand tinned soup. It was my main lunch when I worked (retired) and they all used to laugh at me. Chicken soup, crusty roll and a bag of crisps crumbled in after the bread was finished.
Of course soup is food especially in autumn and feeling under the weather.

ticklyfeet · 12/11/2025 15:13

Oh, that’s actually sound quite nice. DH has many qualities, but he’s not a cook. I sometimes think…this is going to be be responsible until the end of my days.
To be fair, he would be quite happy with a soup and dessert.
My go to soup is usually lentil and carrot but I’m going to try your butternut squash. Thanks for that!

CaminoPlanner · 12/11/2025 15:16

Carrot and ginger with red lentils to thicken it and lightly fried spring onions - I make a big pot of it whenever I am under the weather.

Or chicken soup with barley

Or DH's green soup - every green veg you can think of, finely chopped and cooked in veg stock, with peas, edamame and baby broad beans cooked whole, and a big dollop of fresh pesto stirred in.

I just bought a soup maker too. I caved after years of admonishing those who had one for not just using a saucepan and blender😅 It is fab. I made broccoli and Stilton soup in it yesterday and am just about to have some more from the fridge.

I love soup and make some at least once a week. No recipes just random veg.
A good dollop of chilli makes it even better if you are full of cold.

Agree, it needs more than salt and pepper. I’ll often throw in garlic, cumin and oregano.

I think covid has seriously affected my sense of taste!

I’ve recently been on a liquid/puree diet post bariatric surgery. Yet another bowl of soup gets old very quickly let me tell you. I can recommend the Cully and Sully Chowder though.

Edited

Hope you are well on the road to full recovery ❤️
I will definitely try your recommendation.
I don’t know about anyone else, but winter makes me lazy and unmotivated and cooking is a chore…plus point is that I have a DH who is happy to receive anything I serve up!

WildUnknown · 12/11/2025 15:44

Thanks @ticklyfeet I’m doing well, surrounded by soup though!

Chicken soup? Cullen skink? Oxtail? Pea and ham? All lovely soups with animal protein. Love a nice thick pea and ham soup with a huge chunk of thickly buttered crusty bread. Hits the spot on a cold winters day

You eat meat at every single meal?

Your arteries might thank you for a wee bowl of vegetables and lentils. 😆

Yabu.

Soup Is not food.

It's one of the best foods. It can be very filling too, just depends on what you put in and have it with.

IsawwhatIsaw · 12/11/2025 17:18

I made a nice onion soup at the weekend, it will last till Friday . Cheese on toast as well.

boulevardofbrokendreamss · 12/11/2025 17:22

Currently obsessed with gyoza noodle soup. It’s an expensive habit.

DurhamDurham · 12/11/2025 17:36

We had some soup last night that had been languishing in the freezer for six months, I can never remember what leftovers I’ve frozen so it always a nice surprise when we find out what flavour it is!
We made some sourdough toasties in the frying pan, with extra cheese on the outside for good measure. A perfect combo of soup and toastie.
Definitely the tastiest meal I’ve had for a few weeks.

Mrstawnyowl · 12/11/2025 17:54

My DH has become the soup dragon. Chicken, leek, carrots, good chicken stock and loads of lovely barley. Must have barley!

Some fantastic chicken gyoza Japanese brand ones Yutaka) ( frozen) in Sainsbury’s at moment for £2 a pack - and they are amazing too - best I’ve ever had and we eat them a lot!!

Some people put meat in soup but even as a big meat eater I prefer it without.

OttersMayHaveShifted · 12/11/2025 18:22

YANBU. I absolutely love soup! Dh is currently making minestrone for dinner - it smells amazing. I really, really miss having lovely crusty bread with my soup though (gluten intolerant, possibly coeliac) Sad.

RightOnTheEdge · 12/11/2025 18:31

I don't make soup enough!
I really like the ones in the Mumsnet cook book but I've not made soup for ages.

One of the customers at work gave me some leeks and a butternut squash. I need to get motivated and turn them into soup.

maggiecate · 12/11/2025 18:35

I’ve been on a soup making streak lately. I invested in some Soupercubes so have been making a big pan at the weekend and freezing, you get a perfectly sized block of soup that you can defrost and heat up (also great for portions of chilli etc). I’ve become mildly obsessed.

Boredpanda88 · 12/11/2025 18:40

Last week I did
spinach, kale and asparagus
potatoe and asparagus
chicken
lentil and red pepper
today I have done
5 bean with some lentils
Moroccan chickpea
jamiacan jerk chicken
tomato and red pepper
i bought the ninja soup maker last year after eyeing it up for 18 months literally throw everything in and 30 mins later it’s done, don’t even need to cook the chicken before hand. I struggle to eat enough variety of veggies but I can eat them in a soup no idea how that works I have a bowl every day for lunch.
My husband refuses any type of veg except carrots and won’t eat anything with “bits” in will pick out every onion tomato pepper in any dish but he sure wolfs my soups down since they are so smooth I just lie about what’s in them🤣

calmag · 12/11/2025 18:43

I'm making Borsht tomorrow, a homemade carraway rye bread and plenty of fresh dill and sour cream. I can't wait!

CoraLea · 12/11/2025 19:01

I had spicy chicken soup (homemade) and sourdough with salted butter for dinner 🤤
