I’m 43 years old and never remember snow at Christmas. Had years when it snowed around New Year’s Day.

The same reasons Christmas cards and advent Calendars do 🤷🏻‍♀️

Apparently it's to do with Charles Dickens and Victorian literature in general. When he was a lad there was 'The Big Freeze' which meant for a span of years, snow at Christmas was indeed common, as represented in literature, cards and paintings from that time. A lot of ideas about 'modern' Christmas arose from that period and have sort of stuck.

I think in 2009 or 2010 we (in Yorkshire) had snow at Christmas but that's the only year I can remember.

1457bloom · 12/11/2025 07:38

Before global warming it used to snow in the winter, it was magical.

Newrumpus · 12/11/2025 07:40

Why is it sunny in those holiday posters when it often rains and is cloudy throughout the summer? It’s often too cold to walk down a northern seaside promenade in beach wear.

Myfridgeiscool · 12/11/2025 07:41

In my half century I’ve known two white Christmas days. It’s pretty.
Christmas is overhyped to be magical.
I'm only a little bit bah humbug (one coffee today so far).

ShowOfHands · 12/11/2025 07:41

Have you never seen Christmas cards before? Snowmen decorations in the shops? Not a sniff of an idea that snow is associated with Christmas?

evtheria · 12/11/2025 07:41

For the vibes, bro

BellaTheDarkOverlord · 12/11/2025 07:41

I remember that 2009 snow in Yorkshire! Pipes froze near us and all the water was off for 2 days.

Id love snow just for Xmas eve until Boxing Day then for it all to disappear 😁

QuickBrown · 12/11/2025 07:42

Because of Dickens! A Christmas Carol!
It has snowed at Christmas, one year I was as far South as London. Around 2008ish I think. I remember the trains being affected and getting bumped up to first class!

ShowOfHands · 12/11/2025 07:42

Our local garden centre would be a big surprise op. They seem to have an obsession with festive rats.

mauvishagain · 12/11/2025 07:43

You're more likely to see snow than a flying reindeer, so why do they show sleighs pulled through the air by reindeer??

Do you not live in the UK? There have been lots of white Christmas.

Yes. It's Dickens.

PiccadillyPurple · 12/11/2025 07:48

It snowed on Christmas Day in 1978, also I think around 2005 - can't remember exact year but I remember where I was living and it was roundabout then.

As pp said, snow at Christmas was more common 150 years ago and it's created a lasting association.

Danikm151 · 12/11/2025 07:49

I remember it snowed around 2012 for Christmas.
We visited a couple of different family members on the day. It was not fun trudging through the snow in my onesie

CaptainMyCaptain · 12/11/2025 07:51

It started snowing on Boxing Day 1962 and stayed until March 1963.

mamagogo1 · 12/11/2025 07:52

We had snow at Christmas about 15 years ago… not since (plus I’ve moved)

@ShowOfHands I need to know about more about the rats

OmNomShiva · 12/11/2025 07:58

When Jesus was born it was thick of snow in Palestine.

AgnesX · 12/11/2025 07:59

I was thinking that the other day. You have to admit ads wouldn't be the same set in the piddling rain though!

Dinosweetpea · 12/11/2025 07:59

Im in my 40s, grew up in Wales and remember several white Christmases.
And loads where there was snow on the hills.

Snoken · 12/11/2025 08:21

What do Christmas cards in places like Australia look like?

DuchessofStaffordshire · 12/11/2025 08:24

Because it looks better on Christmas cards than drizzle which would make everyone depressed and full of festive misery.

I don't know but I was told that Christmas cards in Barbados have snow scenes. That was quite a long time ago so things might have changed.
