Why do Xmas ads have snow in them

I’m 43 years old and never remember snow at Christmas. Had years when it snowed around New Year’s Day.

@ShowOfHands I need to know about more about the rats

And me @ShowOfHands

There's also the great calendar reset which moved Christmas forward - snow is more likely in January.

But snow is just the visual shorthand that they use for 'cosy, winter scene. If it was raining it might take us a while to twig that this ad was meant to be for Christmas rather than, well, given the rain, basically any other time of year.

I don't know but I was told that Christmas cards in Barbados have snow scenes. That was quite a long time ago so things might have changed.

They have Mrs Santa in a sexy bikini, sunbathing.😎

What do Christmas cards in places like Australia look like?

I remember seeing a poster for a Christmas carol concert in Cape Town featuring people singing, wearing wooly hats and scarves. I was invited to Christmas dinner at someone's beach house, we sat indoors and ate roast turkey with all the trimmings, on the most stiflingly hot day. At least we could jump in the sea afterwards 😂

DierdreDaphne · 12/11/2025 09:50

...but I m old enough to have experienced quite a few white Christmases, mainly when I was young of course. Great fun for kids but a pain if you are travelling to see relatives! Agree it probably started in the Vicorian era where there were some cold winters and also some imported traditions from Germany (because of Prince Albert) where maybe it's snowier in winter? And more recently maybe US traditions, and the Noerth American climate id also more extreme than ours.

We did have one White Christmas here (Wales) when our kids were still at school -started snowing as we were leaving the end-of-term carol concert. Very festive!! ❄️❄️❄️

That's so funny. I'm Swedish so always have a snowy Christmas but we did talk about what Christmas movies from hot places look like. I didn't actually think they tried to pretend it was cold.

When Jesus was born it was thick of snow in Palestine.

😀

I work in advertising, we don’t think about Dickens. It’s just an easy visual cue for festivity like twinkly lights or people wrapped up with scarves and bobble hats. The whole snow at Christmas may have started with Dickens but we put it in ads as people see it and automatically think Christmas 🎄

Perruquier · 12/11/2025 10:41

What everyone else said, but also, because they are filming these ads in summer half the time, so are trying to camouflage summer foliage.

Like cookery show Christmas specials. There’s a Jamie Oliver one on at the moment where the crew have solved the problem by filming at a chalet high in the Alps, so at least it’s plausibly cold, but there’s a Nigella one from years ago which gets round the cooking by filming mostly at night with twinkly fairylights etc, but then depicts her children coming down on ‘Christmas morning’ past a window showing summer trees in what looks like baking heat.

Octavia64 · 12/11/2025 10:46

I spent one Christmas in the Caribbean. Even there Christmas cards and decorations have snow. And there were great big inflatable snowmen outside the shops.

weird but lovely

IwishIhadcheese · 12/11/2025 10:50

I’ve never seen Father Christmas but Christmas would be a bit weird without him.

Nofireplace · 12/11/2025 10:52

I grew up with snowy Christmases.
Not in UK though

mondaytosunday · 12/11/2025 10:55

Even in LA they put up snowmen and have fake snow in store displays (and some houses)! Don’t we all ‘dream(ing) of a white Christmas’? ☃️🎄

You joke but every few years that area gets snow. So possibly yeah

Move to the highlands of Scotland, you’ll really improve your chances of having a snowy Christmas.

What do Christmas cards in places like Australia look like?

Grew up in the tropics, not a Christian country, all the Christmas cards were standard ones with robins, decorated trees, glittery nativity scenes, snowy lanes etc!
And like @DierdreDaphneexperienced, I’ve had more than my fair share of full Christmas roasts with trimmings (plus pudding on fire) while outside was a balmy 30° 😂 Am convinced my mum turned the AC up so we’d feel extra cold for Christmas!

SnugglyJumpersMakeItBetter · 12/11/2025 14:37

It's prettier than mud!

ahoyshipmate · 12/11/2025 14:38

Certainly true for the current Christmas ad which was filmed a few streets away from our house back in July with a summer storm forecast. The finished ad shows so little of the street I do wonder why they didn't just do the whole thing with CGI.

Netcurtainnelly · 12/11/2025 17:09

Agree, adverts, cards, etc totally unrealistic. Never shows at Christmas.

VickyEadieofThigh · 12/11/2025 17:19

All the reasons other pp have given and - to quote Pamelaar Shipman (who wasn't talking about snow at Christmas) - "Because it's NICE!"

ShowOfHands · 12/11/2025 18:55

The Christmas rats are legion in our local garden centres. They look a bit like this and range from palm-sized to 6ft tall.

EmeraldShamrock000 · 12/11/2025 18:58

Because it snows in the North Pole. Some children are lucky enough to visit lapland, others watch TV advertisements with snow.
It was snowing in Dublin Christmas 2012, or 2011. I have photos of DD in her baby bike.

MySweetGeorgina · 12/11/2025 19:00

Snow

happy families all getting on

no money worries and as many fancy presents and food as you like

no sickness

no sadness

sometimes I think it would be quite nice to live in a Christmas add. But yeah they are not realistic in any way at all. They just try and sell you stuff: buy these chocolates and your kids will be happy, your husband will love you, the ambassador will be your best friend too… and it may snow outside which is pretty and fun as nobody has to work any shifts, hurrah
