How much dog barking do you overhear at home?

Not from your own dog obviously!

All the dog barking around me is driving me crazy but before I go round and say something to the neighbours I need to know if I’m just being very intolerant as even though it seems like a lot to me, really I think being able to hear any barking in my house is intrusive and antisocial. I don’t remember dog barking at all growing up as a child so I’m not used to it, but we lived in a large detached house.

My current house (been here since 2021) is end of terrace in a squishy ex-newbuild development so very different.

Thankfully we are going to try and move next year anyway…to somewhere with fewer neighbours!

Terraced house; lots of neighbours with dogs; no barking. Doesn’t help you though.

Realrobin · 11/11/2025 21:17

Maybe once a day I might hear a dog bark somewhere, but it's not regular or intrusive. I have no immediate neighbours with dogs.

21ZIGGY · 11/11/2025 21:20

There are loads near me including my own so I can't complain though someone puts their dog out at about three am till about eight am and that barks constantly all night though i'm more worried about the dog itself than the barking

XenoBitch · 11/11/2025 21:23

Not much at all, and I am mid terrace.
My neighbour has a dog, but he barks when the doorbell goes, or for a bit when they leave the house.

Guildford321 · 11/11/2025 21:23

One neighbour has yappy dogs. Thankfully, they're getting older now and are a lot quieter but there's a special place in hell reserved for owners who let their dogs bark without checking them.

MyCatPrefersPeaches · 11/11/2025 21:24

Quite a lot where I am but not generally after 2200/2230. Two of my neighbours have barky dogs who like to argue with each other when they go out for their last toilet session before bed. It doesn’t bother me and my neighbours are lovely (plus we have a cat who probably used to toilet in their gardens so 🤷‍♀️). I know both dogs are well cared for, they’re just….barky. I do get how it could be annoying, though!

SwirlyShirly · 11/11/2025 21:24

Detached but our neighbour has about 7 maltipoo kind of dogs and they bark a LOT when they’re in the garden. Our neighbours are otherwise really lovely and I’m sure they get sick of our boys kicking a football about so swings and roundabouts

I'd go absolutely nuclear about that. Poor dog but that's appalling behaviour.

KickHimInTheCrotch · 11/11/2025 21:27

Not many. My neighbour has a family member who brings their dog when they cone to stay a few times a year and it barks incessantly. It makes me realise how quiet the street is the rest of the time. I don't complain because its a couple of days but I would have to if it was permanent.

Okbyethen · 11/11/2025 21:28

Im in a detached house and our neighbour has a dog that whines very loudly and barks whenever it's home alone, it's VERY annoying!

I'm very tempted to say something about it to them but not sure as there's probably not much they can do about it - I guess if they're out of the house the whining won't bother them!

namechangetheworld · 11/11/2025 21:28

My immediate (detached) neighbours have a dog, and if we had known we would have seriously reconsidered buying the house. Dog barks are like nails down a chalkboard for me, it absolutely sets my teeth on edge, and it bloody barks at everything: our neighbours returning home, delivery men, cars pulling into the cul de sac. It also regularly escapes and we often find it roaming around on our drive, which scares our children, because it's absolutely huge.

AmITheProblemOne · 11/11/2025 21:29

Large detached house.
One neighbour with an annoying barker.

Numerous people who park outside to walk their dogs (we live close to a lake where lots of people walk) so lots of barking dogs getting out of cars. Especially annoying in the heat of summer when they walk them at 5/6am

Runningismyhappyplace50 · 11/11/2025 21:30

Semi detached with a dog (cockapoo) next door and only hear him occasionally in summer when windows/ doors are open or even outside.

used to be a happy dog behind us which I heard more but assume they have moved as haven’t heard it recently.

nannyl · 11/11/2025 21:30

Normally none at all, ever.

I do however hear a LOT of cows mooing!!!! (As a result of living very close to a dairy farm)

Radiatelikethis · 11/11/2025 21:31

I live in a terraced house and we back onto a close bit behind us so loads of houses in our immediate vicinity. Never hear anything from any people but there are SO many dogs and once one starts, they all do so a lot of the time and through the night too. I've learned to block it out though and it doesn't bother me that much.

S72 · 11/11/2025 21:34

Mid terrace flat. Previous neighbour had a dog and heard barely anything for years. New neighbours have two yappy dogs that bark all day and are often let out into the garden, barking at 5am, and late at night. Drives me insane.

Beekman · 11/11/2025 21:34

We live in a city and are very lucky to have a back garden. Our neighbours two doors down let their dog out in the morning and it barks for a couple of hours then again in the evening. Were early risers so it doesn’t wake us up in the morning but it often does in the evening. Itms a big dog with a deep bark I’ve never seen them take it out for a walk and even when they’re away, the dog stays at home with a sitter so there is no respite, ever.

The dog is getting on a bit so not really worth annoying our neighbours about. Just hope they don’t replace it with a happy little
shit- that would really drive me insane

Jorvik1978 · 11/11/2025 21:35

Semi-detached property. Immediate neighbours have two dogs who bark on repeat every time someone comes to their front door, when people walk past their front door, and when outside in the garden, every time we go out there, and dare to move. In addition, at random other times during the day as well.

Our own dog barks once, maybe twice when someone knocks the front door.

Our garden backs onto a local park frequented by lots of dogs, so we sometimes hear barking from there as well.

JudgeBread · 11/11/2025 21:39

My neighbours have a lab and I hear her bark a few times a week, usually when they're playing with her. She doesn't bark at the postie or every passing person thankfully.

There's a house in the street behind ours that used have about six dogs that were often outside barking at all hours of the day and night which was annoying, but they've either been read the riot act by someone or moved because it doesn't happen anymore.

I expect a bit of barking here and there as normal household noise, no difference really from a child screaming or a couple arguing every now and then. If it's constant I'd be going to say something, because a dog barking constantly isn't likely to be a happy dog.

Delatron · 11/11/2025 21:39

We had a neighbour who let her dogs bark in the garden at about 5 am - that was annoying. We are detached and we do have a dog. The minute he barks I call him in.

I assumed people couldn’t hear him barking inside as we are detached but now I’m worried. We do have lots of dogs round here so I think as long as it’s not in the garden…

I can’t stop him barking either - he barks at car doors shutting, the door.. he is quiet all night though.

Oh god a couple of hours - we had an hour the other day but that is the first time it has happened (although this was from new neighbours)

This is what my DH says - they either can’t do anything about it, or they don’t care enough to try because it’s not like they don’t know it is barking. So what’s the point in saying anything

I am hemmed in in a village.. neighbours have a gang of little fluffy dogs like the old lady in fish called Wanda. They are left to yap for hours!!!!! Drives me crazy

Pollqueen · 11/11/2025 21:43

I live in a semi in a village with lots of neighbouring dogs and v rarely hear barking and never at night

My old neighbours had a spaniel that barked constantly when they went out. They adored it and when it died they came round to break the v sad news. We were delighted

NotSureWhereThisIsGoing · 11/11/2025 21:43

We only have one neighbour with barky dogs. They are outside a lot (expensive pure bred big dogs, probably soft and friendly but not well trained - they've built a high metal fence and the dogs run along it and bark like crazy every time anyone walks past). It's only daytime but can be annoying. I think they bit off more than they can chew tbh but they do walk the dogs on the lead (always two adults as they clearly pull on the leads) and keep them secure with the very high metal fence...
