How much dog barking do you overhear at home?

ScrabbleChamp64 · 11/11/2025 21:10

Not from your own dog obviously!

All the dog barking around me is driving me crazy but before I go round and say something to the neighbours I need to know if I’m just being very intolerant as even though it seems like a lot to me, really I think being able to hear any barking in my house is intrusive and antisocial. I don’t remember dog barking at all growing up as a child so I’m not used to it, but we lived in a large detached house.

My current house (been here since 2021) is end of terrace in a squishy ex-newbuild development so very different.

Thankfully we are going to try and move next year anyway…to somewhere with fewer neighbours!

i used to live in a semi detached house and the neighbours dog barked very often.
it was clearly bored/understimulated/anxious.
It was rarely walked or even let into the garden. It barked at anyone going by and would bark for half an hour at least. It howled sometimes as well.
Annoyingly the neighbour oldest daughter was often in when it was barking but she didn’t seem to care so wouldn’t shut it up.
We moved because the dog and the neighbours were assholes.

BowlyLarr · 11/11/2025 21:51

We have two rival Jack Russells on our street. It does my head in.

OSTMusTisNT · 11/11/2025 21:52

Loads, does my head in. I can even hear my bellend neighbour barking at his dog to wind it up.

ScrabbleChamp64 · 11/11/2025 21:58

I don’t know if this thread is making me feel better or worse - better than my house isn’t some exceptional dog barking hell hole…worse than so many of us have to endure the noise! Someone upthread said it was like nails on a chalkboard and I feel the same, it sets me completely on edge

we live in a semi detached bungalow. Next door have two yappy terriers who are put out every evening, several times - non stop barking and growling. Every day they are put outside to bark - sometimes as early as 5 am. I hate these dogs - no break from the noise. Neighbours hate us and do not speak to us so no point in saying anything. They ruin my enjoyment of my garden.

Millytante · 11/11/2025 22:07

None, praise the Lord. (My cats wouldn't tolerate any such nonsense!)

Oddly enough, Id love a ‘Fall asleep or else!’ soundtrack of a lone dog giving voice, (only every now and then, and only briefly) faraway in the dark, such as you would hear in a movie. Out in the countryside, maybe, some dog in a nearby hamlet. That sound makes me imagine a deep soft night, and drifting into peaceful slumbers in a comfortable bed.
(Ive tried those rainfall soundtracks, and all have irritated me)

KitchenDancing · 11/11/2025 22:11

A little if we’re outside because we back onto woods where people walk their dogs, but not much.

One of our dogs barks quite a lot though and we foster dogs that can be anxious and bark a lot sometimes.

StrumpersPlunkett · 11/11/2025 22:15

We have always had dogs in my parents family. Not one has been a barky dog. My sister has 4 dogs and they occasionally bark but it is an occasional single woof not continuous.
My neighbour has a particularly polite dog that barks once at the back door to say she has had her wee and would like to come inside. She then sits on the door mat and waits (it is never more than a minute before they come and get her).
It would drive me mad if we had to listen to a barky dog all the time... However, one of the other neighbours has screechy children who aged 10 and 13 (No extra needs - we know them well) still screech like toddlers at their parents like they did when they were toddlers. That is v annoying but I wouldn't say anything.

CrossChecking · 11/11/2025 22:18

My neighbour brings her sausage dog on a bark parade a few times a day. Literally walks it up and down the road while it barks it's head off. Other than that a few in the distance maybe but nothing you can hear inside with the windows closed.

ScrabbleChamp64 · 11/11/2025 21:40

Oh god a couple of hours - we had an hour the other day but that is the first time it has happened (although this was from new neighbours)

I know, the poor thing. They just shove it in the garden. Some kind of Pitbull that needs proper walks to calm down, I reckon.

PrincessofWells · 11/11/2025 22:26

Yes, I live next door to a couple of police, their two kids and a labrador. The barking is horrendous, extremely intrusive and my neighbours are awful. When weve brought it up ive been gaslighted then told to stop complaining! A few months ago I walked into my back garden to let myself in and as usual the dog started. I shouted 'can't you shut your fucking dog up just for once'.

A for sale sign appeared followed by a sold sign, which is hilarious because the week before we had the agents around to value ours as we'd had enough. It's a win 😂

Op you don't have a dog problem you have a cf neighbour problem.

Edited to add the barking went on all morning sometimes. Particularly wonderful was the 8.30 to 9.15 am sessions of non stop barking. People like that shouldn't be allowed to keep animals, poor thing.

JadeSquid · 11/11/2025 22:30

Dog next door. It's a fairly large yorkie. I don't know if it's just big or it's a certain type or it is crossed but it is unusually big for a yorkie. Still relatively small though.

The other weird thing about it is its bark. It is really deep. You'd think the dog it came from was at least middle sized. It barks at any and everything. Sometimes for ages like during heavy rain, it will bark for the whole time. Someone has called the RSPCA and apparently they gave her training tips. Now she gives it treats when it barks...

I moved from a cul de sac to a busy 4 lane road, next to a school. The peace is blissful. I was living next to two border collies who barked to hear the sound of their own voices. I used to lay in bed at night dreaming of taping their mouths closed (leaving room for them to drink of course). I'm the person who picks up wandering dogs from the road and looks after them till I reach their owners. Those mongrels I would have left running and prayed they got hit. To say I despised them would be an understatement. It was a detached house, their owners were home, they did nothing to shut them up.

I'm now in units. People have dogs. We have no issues with barking 24 hrs a day

HundredMilesAnHour · 11/11/2025 22:39

You don’t have to endure the noise. If the barking is excessive, complain to your neighbour. If it contains, complain to your local council (Environmental Health). If they investigate and decide it’s a ‘statutory nuisance’, a noise abatement order can be served on the dog owner. If the owner fails to comply with the noise abatement order, that’s actually a criminal offence and the council can prosecute them. Quite a few reports of people being prosecuted over the last few years and receiving big fines for their barking dogs.

OhDearMuriel · 11/11/2025 22:46

Yanbu
I’ve got 2 separate friends who let their dogs bark very loudly late at night in their gardens. They’re totally oblivious that they must seriously be fucking off their neighbours.

MustTryHarderAndHarder · 11/11/2025 22:49

Next door has a dog but I rarely hear it. We are in small detached houses.

FancyCatSlave · 11/11/2025 22:50

Almost none. Next door have a dog that never barks, as do a few doors down. We’re in a rural village very popular with walkers. Occasionally hear a visiting dog bark innthe field behind house but can go a long time without.

BruFord · 11/11/2025 23:09

We’re mid-terrace, we have a dog and so do many of our neighbors . Our immediate neighbors have two and they were barking yesterday because someone was doing work in the house (tradesman) and the dogs were obviously unsettled. It was slightly annoying as I was wfh but it’s not a regular occurrence.

Our dog barks for a few seconds whenever someone leaves the house. I’ve asked our neighbors on both sides whether it’s annoying, but they’ve both assured me that he stops very quickly and is otherwise quiet

If you live in a built-up area, some dog noise is acceptable, I think. Not if it’s constant though.

My parents have a Jack Russell /Chihuahua cross with a surprisingly deep bark.

To answer the OP, despite living in a suburban semi, very little. Only 2 or 3 neighbours within earshot have dogs and none of them are continually vocal.

reversegear · 11/11/2025 23:21

I’m in the arse end of the countryside, and we have dogs barking all day.

Next door has a cocka thingie that is non stop, next door to them there are three small dogs that bark all day the owners leave them in the garden and conservatory.

across the field we have the farm dogs and can hear them when it’s food time.

I have 4 dogs of my own, 2 that will bark to alert and the rest of the time are quiet.

Thing is we are rural and all detached but the barks travel, and the dogs are outside lots.

We can even hear a couple of dogs in the village a mile+ out as when they get started they go for hours.

stockpilingallthecheese · 11/11/2025 23:23

So bloody many. In fact we just moved house and one of the reasons was to get away from it. I have dogs and I’d never just leave them barking in the garden, I don’t understand how people can!

Simplelifeneeded · 11/11/2025 23:24

Not often and several neighbours have dogs.

crumpetswithcheeze · 11/11/2025 23:24

People are thick, lazy and inconsiderate nowadays. It used to be the norm that if you own a dog, it gets walked twice a day at the very least. Some idiots near me chuck theirs out in the garden at all times of day and night. Sometimes it’s half past midnight, sometimes it’s 7am. Never seen them get walked in three years.

Thursa · 11/11/2025 23:38

From early morning till late at night it’s unusual not to hear barking here. It’s fucking depressing. Some days I’m in tears. One family has four or five large dogs who are out for the first time between 5 and 6 in the morning. That’s the day of barking started. Big dogs, small, yappy dogs. When one starts they all join in.
