To find the obsession with Toby Carvery baffling?

I went on Sunday and won’t be returning. Tiny portion of meat, kids running riot and it smelt like stale farts.

Anyone else struggle to see the appeal?

The stale fart smell would put me off. I o ly go to Carveries where the farts smell fresh.

Rubyupbeat · 11/11/2025 19:01

@FarmGirl78 Wow, you must live in a really scummy area!

TheWytch · 11/11/2025 19:03

Being veggie I wouldn't go for the carvery, but it was the breakfast option for somewhere we were staying like a Travelodge.

I rarely complain in an eating place but this was disgusting. The supposedly clean plates had food remnants dried on them - and this was almost all of them. We struggled to find a clean plate. Same with the glasses.

I will never eat in one again

I think my mistake is when I come out of my town I turn right down the dual carriageway, towards a VERY scutty town, and the Toby is midway between. I need to turn start turning left. Its all relative isn't it? People further left who are even posher are probably distraught when they turn right from their own town and end up in mine 🤣🤣

FarmGirl78 · 11/11/2025 16:56

And theres so many kids running round screaming and "What did I tell you about your fucking behaviour? You're a little shit!" shouty parents, because for all the local scutters it's a really posh place to eat out for family birthdays. Every few years I venture back and immediately remember why I hate it so much.

How to say you are from the West Midlands without saying you are from the West Midlands 🤣

LlynTegid · 11/11/2025 19:31

Not for me, but I can see the appeal be it a Toby carvery or another chain. Especially if you or any one of those with you are choosy in what vegetables you will eat.

Ahh that's very interesting! I don't live in the West Mids, and I'm not even from there, but I did live there for 12 years. I still have a bit of an accent now and again. My heart still remains there so I love that you picked up on it. Is it the word "scutters" that gave it away? 🤣

Yes 😊 I lived in Birmingham for a bit but was told scutters is very much a Wolverhampton thing. ( is that true?)

We are going to stick to our country pubs for a home cooked roast in the future. Yes, you pay a premium but it’s worth it IMO - and also helps with regulating the clientele.

😂 Take it easy Hyacinth. 😆

I've been a few times and don't recognise what you say. I think it's maybe the area you live in. Try travelling to a nicer town next time.

This. ^ I think @Kaykay90 must live in an area that's not as nice as where many others of us live (who have nice Tobey Carveries.) Wink

Same op. We booked on the back of everyone raving about them but left feeling quite traumatised about the whole thing. It was god awful. My DH is a pie and mash man so no snobby cuisine pretensions here but it was like going to a run down damp old house which had lots of sullen looking obese people and families in pyjamas (I’m not joking) and the food was virtually inedible.

I couldn’t wait to get out of there - I think we left most of the food and paid the bill as soon as we could.

In fairness we’ve had some shit carveries at really popular country pubs in bougie villages too. It makes me think that people don’t actually know what a good quality roast dinner actually looks and tastes like.

PLEASE tell me this is a piss taking joke post. 😂 NO-ONE goes to a carvery in their pyjamas! And all sullen-looking obese people.

WTAF?! 😂

I love a good toby carvery. Granted not all of them are good but some are when they have a decent chef and its cheap.

The only chef the have is Chef Ping, it all arrives precooked and frozen, then is left for hours to dry out and become inedible.

You're thinking of Wetherspoons. Many of them have microwaved stuff. Tobey carveries don't.

Give over. You'll be saying you've never seen anyone in Tesco in slippers and a onesie next! You really didn't know that happens? You never been in a hotel and there's always that one family queuing up for breakfast buffet in their jimjams? There's always 2 teenage daughters, one more grumpier than the other one.

Not obsessed but we do call in occasionally, usually on the way back from a trip when there isn’t time to cook. Nearest one to the airport is great. Our local one serves decent portions of meat and unlimited veg for less than £12 on Saturdays, quality of the veg is ‘fair’ but the meat and trimmings are good; it’s hard to get in without booking in advance. I agree the glasses are always dirty though.

Somersetbaker · 11/11/2025 20:35

Zov · 11/11/2025 20:21

None of the chains cook everything from scratch on site, they go for the cheapest possible preprepared option from the wholesaler, that enables them to also have cheap staff.. I was once told, at breakfast, I could have fried eggs not poached, because they had run out of poached eggs, apparently they come wrapped in plastic and just need to be warmed up, because it saves paying the salary of somebody who knows how to poach an egg, God knows what I would have got if I'd asked for a boiled egg!

Beekman · 11/11/2025 20:47

Is there a general, country-wide obsession with TC? Not heard of that.

I look forward to a Toby Carvery when I go back to the UK, there is a lovely one near my family and all age groups enjoy it. Went to a local “posh” pub last time for a roast and it was £25 for nothing much.

I’m wealthy, no one in our family would swear at their kids in public and I have never worn pyjamas to eat out, still enjoy a carvery. HTH, OP.

foodlovefood · 11/11/2025 20:51

They are ok for a quick Sunday roast. I have one near me and go occasionally. It’s got its market

but its breakfasts are good value. Surprisingly they have great unlimited coffee.

Beekman · 11/11/2025 20:54

I also don’t like to go to country pubs with their own take on a Sunday roast because they’re mainly patronised by arseholes who think they are special.

Obsession by whom?
