Our school has banned the word Christmas?

Fayethefair · 09/11/2025 09:30

I’ve heard from a friend on my DD’s school’s ptfa that our Cambridgeshire school has banned the word Christmas to make the school events feel more inclusive. So now it’s Festive Party, Festive Fayre etc. I’m happy to let mumsnet know the name of the school if they don’t feel this post is genuine so they can check this themselves but I won’t put names on here as this is my child’s school, I just don’t think this right and want to see what others think.

My daughter attended a Diwali lunch put on by the school recently and I genuinely thought this was lovely. I feel everything should be represented equally, I don’t understand or agree that the head should be picking and choosing what’s allowed and what isn’t. Surely this isn’t right?

The school not using the word doesn't mean the word is banned.
We're currently in a PC-Gone-Mad era, but I honestly feel if we ride it out, things will get better.

I remember a couple of years where the word "Easter" wasn't found on any chocolate eggs. It's back now!

84 percent of people think you’re not being unreasonable and yet the majority of posters are having a go at you.
This is the problem with AIBU, it attracts those desperate to disagree with the OP no matter how uncontroversial the op is being!

I'd wager a good 2/3rds probably more voted simply based on the title of the thread. The vote being skewed based on people not reading the thread doesn't means the OP isn't unreasonable.

Or a good 2/3 couldn’t construct any kind of post to explain why this thing that didn’t happen is the worst thing to take place since that last thing that didn’t happen, didn’t happen.

I think we have a tendency to overthink these things and it’s massively patronising to do so.

I have Jewish, Muslim, Hindu clients at work and at particular times of the year, when we’re closing for a holiday, they always wish me a Happy Easter/Happy Christmas.

It’s only the do gooders on the PTA/SLT who care about this stuff.

You don't see a difference between wishing an individual a Happy (Whatever) and a school-wide event where you're asking for maximum community participation in terms of volunteer hours, attendance and money spent?

I REALLY hope you are being sarcastic
Chocolate eggs (or any eggs) are totally unrelated to Christianity, but then neither is Easter

and I’d wager they agree with OP but don’t want to engage with the usual unruly bunfight which ensues on AIBU

You don’t remember that. What you remember is the right wing press and SM going mad that Easter wasn’t on the eggs. I remember that too. And I remember people posting proof (in the form of packaging and displays) that it was nonsense.
This is too. The PTA events have been given generic names but I’d bet my bottom dollar Christmas lunch and/or Christmas Jumper Day will happen and be called that.

How can they agree with something that isn't true. No one is banning the word Christmas so those saying the OP isn't being unreasonable are agreeing with a lie?

If they read all of the OP's posts then they would know that Christmas isn't banned, so what are they agreeing with?

You must have missed the bit where Jesus gave his followers brightly coloured foil covered eggs at the last super, apparently the disciples were disappointed as they were hoping of a reprise of the water into wine trick. The story goes that the Easter Bunny is actually based around Judas who hid the eggs around the garden of gethesmene.

People saying one thing and doing another ? On a thread about Christianity and Christmas too ?

Whatever next ?

SerendipityJane · 10/11/2025 13:45

You ask that on a thread about Christianity ? (Other religions with sky fairies are available).

@Luxio I wasn’t aware that you had to show concrete evidence in the AIBU column? Have other posters offered this in the past? My mistake. You’re right, I started all of this for the fun of it and to rile up the lefties 🙄

There's evidence it's not banned, thankfully.

obviously most people will respond to the OP, not many people will read all 712 posts!

And in doing so they would be agreeing with a lie. If they even read just the OPs posts they would see Christmas isn't being banned so would vote differently.

That is like telling "Christians" to read the Bible. (Which is apparently not the point of Christianity. Who knew ?).

DuncinToffee · 10/11/2025 14:02

We have learned that cake sales are the height of Christianity.

My local shop is still selling hot cross buns, right next to the mince pies.

Sainsburys did a really nice TTD range of hot cross buns - including a salted caramel number that was divine. But it was only around Easter.

DuncinToffee · 10/11/2025 14:09

Salted caramel is something that I happily ban

If it offends you that much, I'd happily take it all off your hands.

I still miss the note-perfect salted caramel brownie that Sainsburys sold before they gave up the pretence of caring.

When we lived in the US it was 'The Holidays' and 'Seasons Greetings' as a general approach. The word Christmas wasn't banned though

Same for me. We would always say Happy Holidays. That way all bases were covered. Bit more generic.

It stops embarrassment. I accidentally once wished someone a Merry Christmas and was then later told they were Jewish.

Even in the UK, I tend to use Happy Holidays.

I don't think the school has done anything wrong and you're wasting your energy getting a bee in your bonnet over nothing. I suggest you move on with your day op and find something else to fret about.

Me too. It's minging. Salt has no place with any kind of toffee or chocolate - or anything sweet.

I would also ban anything being painted or decorated in the colour GREY. Or grey tiles/grey kitchen units/grey furniture/grey curtains/grey doors/grey blinds etc.

Problem is, some people don't have the odd thing here and there grey, they have everything grey. They think they're terribly fashionable and cool, and claim they like grey, but in actual fact, they're following the herd, and their house look SHIT being grey thoughout!

SerendipityJane · 10/11/2025 14:34

Well, you'd think.

There was a BBC documentary a few years back about nutrition and taste (explained how the native Americans used frost to break the skins of potatoes to break down the toxins).

Turns out the sweet/salt receptors on the tongue share the same pathways. So a little salt can enhance sweetness.

A chatty friend says:

  1. How salt enhances sweetness
A small amount of salt can:
  • Reduce bitterness, which allows sweetness to stand out more clearly.
  • Slightly stimulate shared pathways, amplifying the perception of sweetness.
  • Change how sugars dissolve and reach the receptors, subtly improving flavour release.
That’s why:
  • A pinch of salt in cookies or caramel makes them taste richer and sweeter.
  • Even fruit like watermelon tastes sweeter with a light sprinkle of salt — it’s not more sugar, but your brain perceives more sweetness.
