Our school has banned the word Christmas?

Fayethefair · 09/11/2025 09:30

I’ve heard from a friend on my DD’s school’s ptfa that our Cambridgeshire school has banned the word Christmas to make the school events feel more inclusive. So now it’s Festive Party, Festive Fayre etc. I’m happy to let mumsnet know the name of the school if they don’t feel this post is genuine so they can check this themselves but I won’t put names on here as this is my child’s school, I just don’t think this right and want to see what others think.

My daughter attended a Diwali lunch put on by the school recently and I genuinely thought this was lovely. I feel everything should be represented equally, I don’t understand or agree that the head should be picking and choosing what’s allowed and what isn’t. Surely this isn’t right?

Calling the events 'Festive' instead of 'Christmas' events shouldn't be necessary, but I also don't think that deciding to do so really constitutes 'banning the word Christmas', unless you're banning everyone from using the word at all.

I teach at a very multicultural girls' secondary school with a large proportion of Muslim students and many of other faiths and none. We have Christmas events. The only students who tend to want to opt out of things like the Christmas carol service are the Jehovah's Witnesses. Everyone else just enjoys the festivities. I doubt any students would want them renamed.

Kendodd · 09/11/2025 10:57

If this is true, not using the word 'Christmas' for what is very clearly Christmas celebrations is exactly the sort of thing white people do and gives immigrants/non whites a bad name. I've never met a single Muslim in my life that has any problem with Christmas.

ForTipsyFinch · 09/11/2025 10:57

Banned 😂 what is the punishment for anyone caught uttering the dreaded c word? Can you find out I’m most interested.

As for a school using the word festive, does it really matter? Nobody is forcing you to use that word yourself.

I can believe it. I have worked at places where it has happened.

Perhaps we could all pop to visit the Winter/Festive lights in the West End or plan a trip to the winter market in the centre of Cambridge.

It has everything to do with pc codswallop and the nanny state. I used to run the PTA Christmas Fayre 25 years ago. Had the Head ventired renaming it in the name of inclusivity, she'd have been told to find someone else to do the legwork and co-ordination. Someone else could have raised the £3.5k.

What a bloody hero you are 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Zigazigarrr · 09/11/2025 10:57

@Bagsintheboot good. And I hope that you feel as strongly about the fact that the complaints about Martine Croxall were upheld.

Christmas. Christmas. Christmas. Christmas fairy. Christmas lights. Christmas tree and Christmas carols celebrating the birth of Jesus.

When the word "inclusive " is bandied around it seems to be inclusive to everyone except white Christians. Lefty virtue signallers bending themselves in two so as not to offend anyone, mainly people who are not offended in the least.
As Noddy Holder would say Its CHRISTMASSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

Nah, it's the ridiculousness of the snow-flake nature of Reform types who take offense at anything that doesn't pander to their totally fake notion of what being British is. All based on zero evidence.

Local Catholic primary ban the word “Christmas” until December.

Also, as a Catholic (off to church in a moment) - I am more than happy for the word “Christmas” to be taken off December events … unless there are actually celebrating the birth of Christ. People here seem to be getting annoyed that “Christmas” is being removed from events that are not, in any way, Christian (was does Temu tat being doled out in the school hall have to do with Christianity?)

People saying “we are a Christian Country”.. who have never been to church, or don’t seem to know anything about Christianity, leaves me feeling that my religion is being used, to peddle a myth, which is a scratch away from racism.

…plus Christmas for us lasts until 12th Jan (ish)… by which point most of your trees, decorations etc are packed away (because you aren’t celebrating the religious festival)

Christmas lasts for Catholics until 12th February I believe!!

mrschocolatte · 09/11/2025 10:59

I find threads like this so frustrating. If this had been me I would want to see proof that the word had been banned. I would ask the school directly to confirm it. Only then would I get angry and outraged. Until then, this is just hearsay and we all know how dangerous that can be in terms of spreading disinformation. So maybe OP, ask the questions, do the work and get the proof. Until then you’re no better than a mischief maker.

OK, step right on up. You said you would be happy to share the name of the school. What is it?

St Imaginary’s, Imaginaryham, Cambridgeshire, clearly.

Christmas. Christmas. Christmas. Christmas fairy. Christmas lights. Christmas tree and Christmas carols celebrating the birth of Jesus.

In this case the complaints were correctly upheld as BBC news presenters must be impartial and not express opinions one way or the other on issues. The fact I agree with her has no relevance to these rules.

Greggsit · 09/11/2025 10:59

Zigazigarrr · 09/11/2025 10:48

I am surprised at the level of acceptance here. I view this in exactly the same way as the word "woman" is now being treated. It's not been made illegal but you get censored for using it. Like the "pregnant people" row on the BBC at the moment. We are walking into a state where only sanctioned language can be used with non acceptable phrases just wafted away and this is just another example.

People are not being accepting, people just don't believe it.

Zigazigarrr · 09/11/2025 10:59

@BallerinaRadio Absolutely fine but thanks for enquiring. xx

So the whole point of AIBU is to ask for others thoughts. It always amazes me when people come on here to say ask somewhere else. Why on earth are you wasting time on an AIBU thread to tell people to ask elsewhere?

Apparently a couple of parents complained that using the word Christmas for events wasn’t inclusive enough so the head has told the ptfa they aren’t allowed to use the word Christmas now. If someone would have suggested this 20 years ago the school would’ve thought you’d gone mad.

@CambridgeLightBlue no it was a very close friend who has no reason to lie and the school event posts verify this. No sign of the word Christmas. No it’s not hurting anyone but as a matter of principle it’s unfair to do this having openly celebrated other religious festivals by name.

Well said!
And yes I've heard this in reference to a few English traditions!
How have people not clocked it?!
It's ridiculous and bloody insulting imo!

What a disgrace to the time honoured Christian tradition of getting smashed and being fingered by your boss at 1am

I’ll need to ask my husband how often that’s happened to him! He must be withholding details from me!

Apart from the fact that we are a Christian country (with a state religion) and not a Hindu one? And no one apart from Hindus celebrates Diwali, whereas not just Christians celebrate Christmas.

Hindus know what they’re coming to when they move to the UK. I find the idea that they somehow don’t immensely patronising.

Christianity is not the State Religion because there isn’t one.

The King is the head of the Church of England only. He’s not head of the Church of Scotland or the Catholic Church or many of the other variations of Christian religions is he?

What about British people who aren’t remotely religious or those who don’t celebrate Christmas such as Jehovas Witnesses?

When I was managing a large team, I used to call our office Christmas party the End of Year Party to ensure that my hard working JW member of staff felt able to participate.

I’m not religious and I’d much prefer that the kids Nativity plays were consigned to the bin and replaced with something more generic about community or farming or something else. I loathe that they still push the idea of a fucking Virgin birth. It’s bloody ridiculous in this day and age.

Randomesttnought · 09/11/2025 11:02

I don’t know what is wrong with some of the people in this country. They are empty. Like one of those blow up inflatable tube men. Void of any identity, values or morals. Their only thoughts are which way is the wind blowing. “You can’t say that! You might divide us.” Ironically of course. Because it is the wind which alters the calm and steady sky. They need the wind. Otherwise they return to a deflated pointless empty piece of plastic.

Kendodd · 09/11/2025 11:02

Also, with regard being 'inclusive' Christmas is the most inclusive festival going, everyone is welcome, of all faiths and none, to celebrate Christmas. Christmas, as basically a celebration of consumerism and food, (which frankly is what it is) loves the whole world and (much of) the whole world loves it back.

Acheyelbows · 09/11/2025 11:03

The Op said she would verify the name with Mumsnet not with the posters as it's her daughter's school.

MinglyMadly · 09/11/2025 11:03

TheendofmrY · 09/11/2025 09:37

That doesn’t sound like they’ve banned the word Christmas, it just sounds like they’ve decided to adopt more generic names for their winter events. Who’s it going to hurt? The baby Jesus?

It will dilute the cultural heritage of this country.

We didn't do the sky fairy or santa, but like the idea of a chilled and cosy few days, eating nice food, and watching old films. It's important to nurture ourselves through the dark days of winter (not sure how that applies in places like Australia though). 😬

Faith is comfort. Faith is never having to be lonely again. Faith is knowing that no one can judge you except God.

Having Faith is a beautiful blessing and can really heal.

It is a shame you’d like to do away with that for everyone, just because you choose not to have faith.
