I mean it lighthearted-ish, as we probably wouldn’t be quite so rude! But what is an absolute dealbreaker for you?
For me it would be the presence of a Saniflo/macerator toilet. Evil things.

I went to view a place once that stunk of cigarettes and wet dogs, there were serious cobwebs everywhere and one of the bedrooms had Cadbury purple walls and a navy blue ceiling. Funnily enough I didn’t make an offer 😆

Stinking of fags

So glad there's people like you. We got ours due that ...rug doctor, open window and 48 hours no smell..ok we stripped wallpaper but they took 120k off asking price.....I've an ott nose re smoke..I honestly can't smell it now

TeaPr · 07/11/2025 19:36

Dog ownership. Even seeing a dog bed would be enough for me.

WizardOfAz · 07/11/2025 19:36

I could never live in a house with a cellar (in case there's monsters living down there) and also there must be no chance of looking out any of the windows and seeing a wind turbines 😱. (I think I'm more scared of wind turbines than cellar monsters.)

And I once saw the estate agents blurb for a house that said 'there is an additional room on the ground floor but we've been unable to find any entryway to it". Nope, not for me then!

annoyingfeet · 07/11/2025 19:38

Everything is grey! A depressing colour.

Wall stickers like Love Live Laugh. My friend bought a home with these stickers in most of the rooms. Some rooms she had to replaster the wall where the decor was as when peeled off bits of plaster fell off.

Why can’t people buy pictures or hanging decor instead? They can take the crap when move.

Londonrach1 · 07/11/2025 19:38

Boundaries...saw one property where the neighbour built to properly line but still had back gate so must have walked onto the our potential property (think building towards our property then gap to back gate) to get access to their back garden...first thing you do would put a fence up stopping their access...also I remember viewing a property to have the potential next door scream over the fence to the seller I'm parked here and that's that ..we ran! Beautiful house too

TutTutTutSigh · 07/11/2025 19:50

We viewed a newish build before buying our reno. It was unbelievably shabby for a new home, the dog had wee'd so often by the inside of the patio doors that the laminate had rotted away into a dinner plate size hole. It smelled neglected, and they'd clearly not done a decent clean in a long time. £100k of cars on the drive 😏.

Next house we viewed was a reno - not updated from the 70's but clearly loved, spotless, and filled with quality but old furniture. We bought it.

Everything everyone else has said plus Airbnb or holiday homes as neighbours.

Anxietybummer · 07/11/2025 20:01

Such an interesting thread. We viewed a house recently that had sloping floors (quite obviously) and a couple of wonky door frames. Old Victorian in a very hilly area, clearly subsidence. I suspect underpinned at one point. I’m keen to run but I really LOVE it. Have asked follow up questions, but suspect will need to walk away!

London in my early twenties.
Viewed a flat that had a toilet in the corner of the kitchen with a shower curtain rail around it.

We need the laugh emoji reaction so much 🤣

My parents converted a couple of houses like this in the 60s and 70s. There was a condition on one of the mortgages that they had plans in place to convert the old wash house and outside toilet to an indoor bathroom.

Interesting, we don't have any quite like that style in the village but I know the sort you mean

Greencactusgirl · 07/11/2025 20:17

Dark beams and low ceiling
Stone floors
Tiered garden
On a steep hill or a busy road
Narrow rooms
Completely open plan

Yes. 100%

CinnamonBuns67 · 07/11/2025 20:33

Damp. Damaged bathroom or kitchen units unless I'd have money to replace immediately. Dirty house. Messy garden. Neighbours or neighbours garden look scruffy. Smell of weed in the neighbourhood. Neighbours playing loud music. Nicotine stains (they take forever to get out)

BigAnne · 07/11/2025 20:34

Artex, especially if covered with gloss paint. High conifers. NF back garden. Same street as primary school resulting in parking wars. No hallway and small bedrooms. Lack of storage for mop, hoover etc.

Redheadedstepchild · 07/11/2025 20:34

I once worked with somebody who lived in a flat above an undertakers or funeral home. It was a long time ago and I think I only went round to her place once to drop her wages off at the door or her uniform sweatshirt that she'd left in the staffroom. Something like that.

I forget now. I was only about 18. Anyway. Freaked me out. She wasn't much older than me and she lived alone.

I didn't really want to know if it was just some kind of office or where they kept the dead people.

I couldn't live with dead people downstairs.

TakemedowntoPotatoCity · 07/11/2025 20:35

Thumping house music.

Nice quiet neighbours though.

Keeping snake(s) or similar

Anyone in the vicinity using front garden as rubbish tip or having derelict vehicles parked so long that plants are growing up through them.

The property looking as though it was not cared for/looked after.

Evidence of smoking inside.

Re the keeping snake(s) is this actually a concern? My DD has a snake, and a variety of other creatures including jumping spiders and tarantulas. Is it that they might escape or get left behind or just viewing the property while they’re in residence? We’d have to relocate them all for a bit if selling up!

Flowersforyourchocolateprettyplease · 07/11/2025 20:47

Caravans in neighbouring drives.

lljkk · 07/11/2025 21:15

One house we looked at had a constant whiny sound in the garden, from nearby industrial estate. I'd be sensitive to a persistent sound like that, also some smells.

Stop picking on Saniflo toilets! They are not all bad.
We have four toilets two of which are Saniflo. One is in my en-suite and no one else is allowed to use it; it behaves very nicely. The other is at the top floor and is really only used occasionally by guests who are warned not to put any foreign objects in it.
We have had them both for years, fine for limited use, but I would not want to rely on a Saniflo as the only toilet.

They’re the devil’s work. You’re not allowed to have them as your only toilet in case there’s a power cut.

I would buy anything, even a shell without a roof. I would be up for doing a huge renovation or rebuild and redesign the entire house but for some reason a stairlift or a hospital bed etc. totally turns me away from a house. This is nothing to do with the house itself, and I know that it’s my issue but seeing evidence of elderly people struggling in the house, totally panics me.

I would even consider one with a reasonable ghost. But one shower rail and I’m off.

😁

Next door to a brothel. They are legal here in Australia and one has opened up next door to a friend's above-retail flat. The grim bit is walking round the back where the washing line is full of smallish cloths. Wank rags I imagine.

Roseandviolin · 07/11/2025 22:01

Access to the bathroom is through the kitchen. Off putting
