If buying a house, what would make you want to walk straight back out?

I mean it lighthearted-ish, as we probably wouldn’t be quite so rude! But what is an absolute dealbreaker for you?
For me it would be the presence of a Saniflo/macerator toilet. Evil things.

Stinking of fags

Breadcat24 · 07/11/2025 16:42

Smell or if it was filthy, if the neighbours were being raided by the police next door, nice big rat, damp, shoddy diy

Rexinasaurus · 07/11/2025 16:43

If it looked like it hadn’t been maintained properly. That could be a costly mistake.

cramptramp · 07/11/2025 16:43

Smells of dog or cat wee.

bridgetreilly · 07/11/2025 16:45

Smell of damp.
Pristine new kitchen/bathroom that is not to my taste. I don’t mind taking out an old one, but I feel bad taking out something new, even if I hate it.

TheAutumnalCrow · 07/11/2025 16:47

Neighbours making a horrible racket during the day with loud music, screaming etc. Been there, done that. No thanks.

lazyarse123 · 07/11/2025 16:47

Poorly maintained.
We were buying a park home and one sounded perfect we went to look and I only got through the porch and immediately said no.
Dh and the estate agent said to just look. I did and my God it was grim. Disgusting carpets, mould in cupboards, things falling apart. The agents rang after for feedback. I absolutely told the truth.

Ilovemychocolate · 07/11/2025 16:47

This actually happened to me… motorbike in kitchen in pieces, and bondage straps tied to the bedposts 😳

JMSA · 07/11/2025 16:48

Yes, noisy neighbours would be a really big one for me. I need my peace and I’d find that incredibly stressful.

If I was buying something to move straight into instead of a fixer upper, then signs of neglected maintenance. If there are things you can see, there’s almost always worse and more expensive stuff that you can’t see.

Loads of cats/smell of cat wee or cigarettes would also put me right off. So, so hard to get rid of completely.

Overtheatlantic · 07/11/2025 16:49

Onslow and Daisy waving from next door.

JipJup · 07/11/2025 16:49

Bad smell.

Kitchen not separate from living room.

DrCoconut · 07/11/2025 16:49

Very strong smell of any kind. Lots of work needed - I don't have the budget, time or energy. I'd also find an upstairs bathroom to be a bit strange as I am not used to it but it wouldn't be a deal breaker. I guess that would be known before viewing though.

LindorDoubleChoc · 07/11/2025 16:50

Neighbouring properties being in a state, litter on the street.

RuncibleSpoons · 07/11/2025 16:51

No downstairs loo or utility.

Obvs. I wouldn’t view a property without those, so damp which I can detect a mile off due to my job or signs of covering up issues - like a newly plastered/painted wall. The smell of cigarettes would definitely put me off as it’s very hard to get rid off. My sister’s last house had belonged to smokers, back in the day when smoking inside wasn’t unusual/unthinkable.

They removed all carpets. Stripped walls, washed them, had them decorated. Still the smell lingered. They ended up having to have every room replastered a year later.

Theyreeatingthedogs · 07/11/2025 16:51

Nigel Farage next door.

Are you sure you don’t mean a downstairs bathroom? Personally I consider upstairs quite typical and prefer it to downstairs although don’t mind if it’s a second bathroom and certainly like a loo on each floor.

TheCountessofLocksley · 07/11/2025 16:54

Cigarette/weed smell
grease/fat/food smell or a dirty kitchen
dirty toilets/bathrooms/smell of wee
fake grass/garden that is all hard landscaped
grey sprayed window frames
downstairs loo off the kitchen/utility room
sticky carpets
flag pole/flags
shared drive
Totally open plan

probably loads more….i’m fussy

Screwyousimon · 07/11/2025 16:54

I went to view a house on an open day where the estate agent wouldn’t even go inside the smell was so bad (urine, faeces, grease and fags). There were a lot of people not even checking out the upstairs just walked back out again. I loved it as it had soooo much potential and ended up buying it. It was a total back to brick gut so the smell soon went!

The neighbours being dicks.

My husband and I went and walked around the block outside the house we were thinking of buying at night, on the weekend, very early in the morning... Just to see what the neighbours were like noise and activity wise lmao. I couldn't be doing with dickhead neighbours.

tapaw · 07/11/2025 16:58

Keeping snake(s) or similar

Anyone in the vicinity using front garden as rubbish tip or having derelict vehicles parked so long that plants are growing up through them.

The property looking as though it was not cared for/looked after.

Evidence of smoking inside.

NotMyRealAccount · 07/11/2025 16:58

If the neighbouring houses looked neglected I probably wouldn't get as far as the front door.

applegingermint · 07/11/2025 17:00

A strong smell of plug in fragrance. I assume they are definitely hiding something, whether damp or dog smell.
