It’s that time of year again - fireworks

I don’t have any pets, so I’m lucky that I don’t have to worry about this, but I still feel for animals, wildlife, people with disabilities, etc when they start. Some have just started going off in the street behind me, and I can hear next doors dog going crazy. I’m not against them, and I know it’s only once a year - well, not really, as people do them on Halloween now, all through November and at Christmas. There’s always people posting in Facebook groups asking for a heads up if there’s anything planned, but not everyone is on social media or even cares. I do think they could be silent though. It would still be nice and fun to look at, but it wouldn’t really cause any distress then.

I’m not anti fireworks and am never that person complaining on Facebook about them but we live in a very quiet street and someone started letting them off after 10pm! I’m gobsmacked that anyone would think that was acceptable. Why wait till then?!

Around here that’s when the rain went off. We had loads at that time.

Very drizzly at that time here and had been dry all night so not sure what the thought process was.

Completely agree with this. Prior to Hallowe'en we had lots of fireworks going off nearby for Diwali and none of the regular firework complainers that I know said anything about them. As soon as fireworks start for Halloween and Bonfire night, the moaning starts.
Wonder why this is. The Diwali display went on for a while and I enjoyed watching it from my bathroom window.

Yep, I train my dogs but that takes work and people don’t bother. I do acknowledge it’ll be harder in some breeds - mine are gun dogs. I think the moaning annoys me because it’s disproportionate to the number of people who clearly love fireworks at our sold out local displays. Cars and planes are far more damaging to wildlife but we will still be using those so the faux concern for wildlife dedicated to fireworks bemuses me a little.

Neighbours being antisocial is an issue but if they’re arseholes then you’re not going to change that by moaning about all fireworks imo. They bring a lot of joy to so many people.

It’s not just them being annoyed though. Every year there are dogs, horses and wildlife that are literally frightened to death by them. You think animals deserve to die to balance out your inconvenience?

Because no one’s ever been killed by a dog that wasn’t there’s!

KatiMaus · 06/11/2025 09:48

My thoughts on this topic haven't altered in 40 plus years. . . If your idea of fun is lights in the sky and stuff that goes bang, you more than likely are a simpleton with the IQ of a single cell amoeba.

I went to the pub last night in my neighbouring town and saw 3 separate groups of grown men who were hanging around back alleyways lighting firecrackers. Just weird.

I'm quite certain they do, the donkey has absolutely lost a considerable amount of weight poor thing.
It started off with 2 Shetlands, 2 horses and the 3 that remain. There has been no hay bales dropped since the other 4 went and looking in the trugs I can see, no water either.
The local community are apparently the only ones bothered as they take the kids up and feed them.
No-one that owns them has been near the field for ages, I know this as the blokes in the garage opposite have told me.
I'm a rider so well aware of when to not feed horses that don't belong to me.

Contact World Horse Welfare and they'll send one of their field officers out to check them, they have the power to remove them too if needed.

BeeDavis · 06/11/2025 15:38

I just get sick of the moaning every year. It’s not a surprise that a few weeks in November we’ll hear the odd firework going off. Then there’s the people who just blatantly lie and say they’ve been going off every night for six months 🤣 bollocks! And I say this as someone who has a dog. A dog I made sure to desensitise from a young age. But some people haven’t done this and shock their pets don’t like it! 🙃

If it was just the 5th November I wouldn't have a problem with them, it's just one night. But round here, they start at the beginning of October and continue until New Year! I'd like to be able to hear the fucking telly for a start!

Likewise, hence my wish for organised displays and designated days.

Because no one’s ever been killed by a dog that wasn’t there’s!

Firstly, it’s “their’s”. Secondly, what kind of a bullshit argument is that? There are more killings from other people than from dogs. You don’t go around saying people deserve to die because other people can be killers?

Yes, people have been killed by out of control dogs but that doesn’t mean other dogs, horses and wildlife deserve to die.

our dog was beaten and abused before we got her. Not every dog is as resilient as yours 🙄

Yes, because you're being purposely obtuse. Because 1.)it wasn't just my dog who was terrified of fireworks. 2.)I mentioned that there are people who have reasons to be shit scared of fireworks, but you're only focussing on the fact that I mentioned pets.

You're either obtuse, ignorant, or incredibly thick. Which one would you rather be?

They’re all of them.

PortSalutPlease · 06/11/2025 19:26

NikkiPotnick · 06/11/2025 06:44

Do you also apply this principle to the damage done by pets? I expect you probably know huge numbers of animals die because of the dogs and cats people choose to keep for their own enjoyment.

Those animals are also being traumatised by fireworks, you know. Wildlife find them incredibly distressing.

Thank you for the spell check- apologies for clearly annoying you.
On the dog front they bring happiness to their owners not to me, in fact they are a big inconvenience. Just like fireworks, I like them, they are an inconvenience to pet owners. That’s life!

Obviously, hence I didn't dispute the content of the post I replied to. So, do you also have the same to say about other things that are bad for wildlife, like pets? Do all the animals killed by domestic pets deserve to die as a consequence of the feelings and decisions of those pets owners?

easytoremember · 06/11/2025 19:50

I think they are obnoxious. Where I live, they go off for the whole of November and continue sporadically until New Year. Birds die / are panicked / abandon their nests. Other wildfile suffers. used to love them, but I now I think they are just daft: wow!, big noise!, lots of colours!, whoop whoop! We can see this just watching coverage of Israel-Gaza.

My 10 year old complained last night after bed time as they were keeping her awake and she found the sounds frightening, and was concerned about the birds. She enjoyed fireworks for a few years, between her ears being able to cope, and before she understood the impact.

It's a shame because I like the calendar of regular 'events' that link somehow to past traditions in a pagany sort of way. They give us something to centre our lives around. But they are all becoming commercialised and something else entirely. Halloweeen has been inflated and Americanised. Christmas is just something else completely, nothing to do with Jesus. Now, we have Black Friday...that's what society now worships at the altar of!

Oh, I'm getting all cynical.

Ditch Bonfire Night. Most people don't really understand the significance or sad history of it, anyway.

The number one cause of death of wildlife is cars. Then disease. Then loss of habitat.

Pers are very, very far down the list. Do I like it? No. Do I own pets that would do it? Also no. But animals being killed by other animals is kind of how the animal kingdom works.

You're not really answering the question.

Fireworks are obviously not the main killers of wildlife either, but evidently you think they're significant enough to bring up despite them being a long, long way down the list. Bit late to frame this in terms of main killers now. So, do you apply the same principle or not?

As a point of fact, pet populations owned by humans killing wild animals is not how the animal kingdom works. This is an artificial situation created by humans. These are not animal populations that would exist otherwise. As such, it's totally different from wild animals killing other wild animals.

And people don’t deserve today because of some morons pet preference.

Sartre · 07/11/2025 09:30

When my DD was small she was terrified of them so every single year I had to brace myself for her screaming and having to sleep in my bed. Really resented them at the time so understand people’s hatred.

I always say it should be public displays only. This means they should also be allowed the weekends either side to allow working people to attend. Private fireworks shouldn’t be a thing.
