It’s that time of year again - fireworks

I don’t have any pets, so I’m lucky that I don’t have to worry about this, but I still feel for animals, wildlife, people with disabilities, etc when they start. Some have just started going off in the street behind me, and I can hear next doors dog going crazy. I’m not against them, and I know it’s only once a year - well, not really, as people do them on Halloween now, all through November and at Christmas. There’s always people posting in Facebook groups asking for a heads up if there’s anything planned, but not everyone is on social media or even cares. I do think they could be silent though. It would still be nice and fun to look at, but it wouldn’t really cause any distress then.

Not affected enough to warrant a ban though. Not sure what PTSD has to do with it and in your case, couldn't you have just not gone out to see them?

Ex soldiers can have PTSD by fireworks. The bangs can replicate gun fire and apparently can be utterly terrifying for some of them so I've heard.

MrsLizzieDarcy · 05/11/2025 21:06

They weren't anything like as loud as they are now when I was a kid.

I personally think everyone letting them off needs to have one up their arses and see how much they enjoy the oooohs and aaaahs then. We live rurally and there's so much livestock out in the fields as the weather is still mild.

FieldInWhichFucksAreGrownIsBarren · 05/11/2025 21:06

There are 2 ponies & a donkey in a field near work, I go and fuss them and take them bits as can't remember the last time I saw any hay dropped off in the field for them.
I've spent tonight worrying if they are ok 😔

Whatshesaid96 · 05/11/2025 21:06

Our local town three miles away had a large event last weekend. We could hear them at that distance from home so I really felt for the poor wildlife in the nature reserve next door to it.

Jowak1 · 05/11/2025 21:08

I am not a big fan of fireworks but totally understand everyone is different and lots of people like them. We have been celebrating Bonfire night for years and I have many fond memories of Bonfire night from being a child. I do think they have got a lot louder now though than they ever used to be. They sound like bombs going off! I think they should make a noise but perhaps not as noisy as they are now. I personally believe that people feel safer when at organised events with a clear start and finish time and the fireworks being well managed ( rather than teens setting them off dangerously on a road near me tonight). However unfortunately due to government cuts lots of organised events have been cancelled by the local authorities.

Where did I say I have PTSD?

It's not exactly avoidable if you have to go out on firework night. Albeit, me and my son didn't have to, but he asked to go and then when he got frightened, we went straight home. But not everyone has that option, and they have to suffer while fireworks are fucking screaming into the sky. They're unnecessarily loud. Before he died, our dog used to piss himself out of fright. Why is that fair or necessary? It isn't.

You sound like a right arse wipe.

They’ve gotten too powerful, too loud, it all goes on for too long. It’s actually quite pathetic that some loud noises and bright lights amuse adult humans. There are illegal fireworks now too.
It’s a tradition that can die out as far as I’m concerned.
If you think it’s ok that animals and wildlife are petrified for your amusement then to quote Ricky Gervais, you are a cunt.

Really? There used to be bigger ones "mushroom" that were around years back but they were banned.

Mylittlebobble · 05/11/2025 21:19

Someone just set off a loud one that lasted quite a long time. I got up and checked that my windows were actually shut as it was so loud. This is the first Bonfire night that we've had our (adopted) cat. Luckily, she's completely unaffected and remains a furry little ball, asleep on the settee.

I honestly don’t understand the moaners of fireworks. It’s bonfire night and it will be bonfire night on the 5th of November for the rest of your life so what’s the point in moaning about them. The whole pet thing too I don’t get I’ve had no end of dogs over the years and not one of them has been scared of fireworks. I have 5 dogs and 3 are in the garden right now and not a peep from them.

If it was just the 5th November I wouldn't have a problem with them, it's just one night. But round here, they start at the beginning of October and continue until New Year! I'd like to be able to hear the fucking telly for a start!

Silent ones would be so boring! I bought some fireworks for tonight and obviously avoided all the "low noise" ones. What a waste of time.

Considering its been a tradition for 400 odd years, I'm sure that the wildlife will pull through.

400?

Thousands

What a thoughtless post! Fireworks are so loud now, years ago it was the 5th November ONLY that they were set off and they didn’t sound like bombs.

I swim in an outdoor pool every night,it has been heartbreaking to see birds flying about in the dark, they are terrified .Every year I sign petitions and every year nothing is done as out it.

People are so selfish now and care about nothing except themselves.

That's lovely of you, but are you sure they need hay? A lot will manage perfectly well on grass until it gets colder. If someone had fed my Welsh mare titbits thinking she was starving on her restricted grazing, they'd have caused massive issues. I'm glad you go and give them a fuss.

lljkk · 05/11/2025 21:25

Loud bangs are pissing me off tonight. On and off for hours. I'll phone the police on them in future, I reckon.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 05/11/2025 21:28

I do love them, though the organised displays are far more enjoyable and safe than randoms letting them off in their gardens.

I think the public ones are smaller and quieter than when I was small though, perhaps that’s just because I’m bigger!

I much prefer the noise and flashes from fireworks for a few nights each year than the screaming from our new neighbours 3 year old every morning (from 6am or earlier) and evening, on top of their seemingly constant diy (carpet fitting at 8am on bank holiday Sunday in August really pissed me off).

Hohumhuee · 05/11/2025 21:30

My super anxious dog doesn’t really bat an eye at fireworks, sometimes she does a look if there’s a really loud one but we studiously ignore and she goes back to staring at the cat.
we have a fireworks championship nearby in Sept and with the crow scarers and gun fire from hunts and the noise of RAF planes going over head it’s all a bit meh at this time of year.

why on earth would you take a young child out to see them that requires ear defenders and hoods and still rolls up in the feral position at the sound? That’s crazy

GameofPhones · 05/11/2025 21:33

Just reading on Reddit that fireworks are banned for home use in Australia.

Because he asked to see them? I warned him that they'd be loud, and he said that he still wanted to try. I know my son well, obviously, so I expected he'd be scared, but what if I'd have been wrong and he really enjoyed it even with the noisiness? I didn't know he'd react exactly like he did because normally he just says he wants to go home. This was a new development.

Get the stick out of your arse and realise that kids can try to do uncomfortable things if they request to, as long as it's safe!

You are going to phone the police because someone has set fireworks off on bonfire night?

shellyleppard · 05/11/2025 21:37

Getting annoying now. Still going off at 9.30 pm. I have 3 pets, two not bothered one hiding under the bed.

TheaBrandt1 · 05/11/2025 21:40

When did people get so precious?! It’s fireworks night so….there are fireworks! Should the whole tradition be binned because of some people’s dogs? Ridiculous.

I'm quite certain they do, the donkey has absolutely lost a considerable amount of weight poor thing.
It started off with 2 Shetlands, 2 horses and the 3 that remain. There has been no hay bales dropped since the other 4 went and looking in the trugs I can see, no water either.
The local community are apparently the only ones bothered as they take the kids up and feed them.
No-one that owns them has been near the field for ages, I know this as the blokes in the garage opposite have told me.
I'm a rider so well aware of when to not feed horses that don't belong to me.

How sad. Has anyone managed to contact the RSPCA (I know from experience they are bloody useless).

I last contacted the RSPCA when a different horse was 'dumped' and left in the same field on its own.
They wouldn't even send someone out to have a look as the horse was being fed, albeit by the community and 'there was clearly a water source somewhere as it hadn't died'
I was honestly like wtf?
That one disappeared and the field was empty a while then this group appeared.
The ones that remain have got matted manes with thistle like things stuck in them, a shed that has no bedding of any description and the rugs that were took off them at the end of spring and left on a fence have now disappeared.
I worry for them but no-one that can help will.

MeouwKing · 05/11/2025 21:52

When I was a kid, we had bangers, and we used to bury them in cow-pats and let them off.
