Breakfast before school

Breakfast Eating GIF

I am just curious. What are your children eating for breakfast before school?

We’ve got into a habit of making scrambled eggs and a toast. My 8 year old makes this by herself most mornings. Occasionally, if there’s bacon in the house, she’ll throw in a rasher or two!

We don’t do cereal. Mainly because it slides into sugary shit plus we don’t drink milk so wouldn’t know what to put with it (daughter had an intolerance as a baby and we just never got back into it).

The teacher told me she has children in the class eating chocolate bars for breakfast - but is this really true?

Curious what others do

Can’t tell what’s worse about this post the judging others part or the humble brag part.

Does it matter as long as they have something in their tummies who cares whether it’s a full on breakfast buffet prepared by an 8 year old or a fricking Penguin Bar

DD is right in to bagels with cream cheese at the moment. I would love her to have eggs, she only really likes dippy egg and only eats the yolk. She has this on weekends usually. She also recently went through a phase of greek yoghurt, honey and fruit. I was pleased with this but we got through a lot of yoghurt as I eat it a lot too

We do have cereal but I agree with your stance on cereal Op and am trying to phase it out, except for the occasional Weetabix

My one son only has cheese toasties for breakfast, the other two eat either cereal (Weetabix so not really sugary) or bread with honey or jam (St Dalfour that doesnt have added sugar, a bit expensive but better than then others)

DS1 likes porridge or toast usually.
DS2 likes cereal or a yoghurt.
If they are still hungry after they have some fruit. Occasionally someone might sneak a custard cream.

(Sometimes they have 2nd breakfast at breakfast club)

Usernamenotav · 05/11/2025 19:34

Weetabix, shreddies, Cheerios, Crumpets, toast, banana and egg pancake. Can't imagine giving them the same thing everyday but they get bored easily.

Mumsnet is just so full of humble brags 😂 it gives me a good laugh though.

It's fucking awful for children to have a chocolate bar for breakfast. You can call that 'judgy' all you want. Because I am judging

PumpkinPie2016 · 05/11/2025 19:41

My son (age 11, Y7) has 3 weetabix and a drink of milk. Often followed by toast or cheese and apple.

He is very tall for his age and slim so has a big appetite 😂

I struggled with breakfast as a kid as I don't like milk really - have it in tea but not otherwise. Still don't have much now.

oncemoreuntothebeachdearfriends · 05/11/2025 19:44

Never cereal, I prefer healthy food.
Usually egg or cheese based, perhaps bacon once a week.

Cheese and bacon are hardly healthy foods! I don't think you should be quite so judgy about cereal!

Ireallywantadoughnut36 · 05/11/2025 19:52

We have all sorts of things, my ds normally has porridge, fruit, maybe some nuts, I often make banana bread to use them up and he loves that- he'll have a few courses normally. My dd is fussier and tends to either have a yoghurt, fruit, sometimes some granola, sometimes some frosties, quite often a waffle from a packet which might not be much better than chocolate tbh, and she drinks nothing so I blitz her up fruit juice and frozen berries for a smoothie (probably full of sugar but it's vitamins and it fills her up so I don't care)
Honestly - everyone is in a different place, I personally don't believe many/any children I know are having a chocolate bar. Equally, lots of children/parents have nothing so somethings got to beat nothing. It's not really anyone's job to judge/discuss, safeguarding policies are in place if teachers are worried about neglect so they should follow those not gossip to other parents.

Yes, it does matter. A chocolate bar for breakfast every morning is harmful for a number of reasons. Do you really not know this?!

laurajayneinkent · 05/11/2025 19:59

Usually cereal or toast, plus I buy one pack of other breakfasty things per week (crumpets/scotch pancakes/waffles that you put in the toaster). I keep trying to encourage the kids (10 & 13) to have non-sugary cereals / Marmite instead of jam at least half the time. Sometimes eggs or croissants at the weekend but not always.

Teanandtoast · 05/11/2025 20:01

As a teacher- yes it's very true!

goldenautumnleaves25 · 05/11/2025 20:03

Depends how much time we have.
Very sport 8 year old, he does some sort of organised sport 5 days per week.
Most days: small bowl of shreddies, blueberries or grapes, cucumber and a crumpet with butter. occasionally a boiled egg.
If i have time: 2 scrambled eggs on brown toast with cucumber, cherry tomatoes and fruit plus a brioche bun. milk in a cup.

TinyTeachr · 05/11/2025 20:06

Toast here, but eldest has it smothered in chocolate spread, so probably not much better than a chocolate bar! She needs tempting to have any breakfast at all, she's never been hungry much in the morning and we leave early so anything that tempts her to eat..... Younger 3 not so picky.

Percypigsyumyum · 05/11/2025 20:10

Porridge, cereal, toast, sometimes beans on toast. I Have always had a real thing about it my kids going to school hungry so make sure they’ve had a good feed. However it definitely gets harder as they get older and I have less control!
I’m a secondary school teacher and so many kids (from all backgrounds!) come in having eaten nothing, or with bags of biscuits/sweets… they then fill themselves up at break time with bagels, toast etc that they could have got at home?

Ncforthiscms · 05/11/2025 20:17

My kids vary.
Oldest i have to force a piece of toast or fruit
Youngest likes weetabix, omlette, banana, croissant. Usually 2 or 3 things as is most hungry in the morning.
Me nothing till lunch

RubySquid · 05/11/2025 20:23

Mewling · 05/11/2025 18:14

Eggs, yes. Bacon? Does your 8 year old do that? I call bullshit frankly.

We don't eat pork products so no

Anxietybummer · 05/11/2025 20:30

Porridge. Every morning. She loves it… Although, she did sneak a small chocolate ball from her Halloween stash before we left for school today. So you could argue she had chocolate for breakfast 😆

Sneering at cereal only to reveal your ‘healthy’ breakfast of cheese and bacon… a joke surely!?

talktalk66 · 05/11/2025 20:37

I think breakfast time, especially on a school and work week, can be very tricky for families. Everyone has to be up and ready early, lots of rushing around. Some children, as well as adults struggle to eat early in the mornings. Others may have all sorts of reasons why they don't manage breakfast. Many primary schools now are offering free breakfast each morning, usually comprised of toast, yogurt, fruit, cereal and milk. The children can choose to sit, relax, and eat breakfast with their friends in their own classrooms when they arrive at school. Breakfast time lasts for about half an hour after everyone has arrived. It's a good social time and encourages children to have breakfast and try new foods. I think this is a great idea and takes pressure off that early morning rush.

CrispieCake · 05/11/2025 20:39

My child doesn't really eat breakfast in the morning. He'll pick at some toast or cereal but never more than a couple of bites. He will drink a glass of whole milk though. It's a bit of a concern as he doesn't usually eat anything at school either at the moment, bar a few carrot sticks on some days. I try to load him up in the evening.

Tortielady · 05/11/2025 20:45

Many years ago, when I was a student, I house-shared with a vegan, who put fruit juice on her cereal. I tried it and thought it was really nice, but the cereal in question was muesli, (I don't know what rice krispies would be like splashed in orange juice) and it seemed expensive. But it made a change from toast and it's was certainly quicker than porridge.

I know this isn’t the point of your thread but breakfast is a battle every morning as my son is rarely hungry, but it feels wrong sending him in without feeding him.

So, sometimes cereal, sometimes porridge, sometimes pancakes, we did cereal bars for a while.

I haven’t tried chocolate bars or share bags of sweets but we aren’t far off that!

Mine was the same @FuckoffeeBeforeCoffee but I found a recipe for high protein muffins on bbc food and he loves them. I did add a few chocolate chips to encourage him to eat them but that feels like a small price to pay.
