Say you’ve not got a minimum amount you need to earn, you just want to keep working to have some money of your own.

what job would you do?

Something to do with training horses. I’d love that. Much better than my corporate job!

Probably work in a bookshop, one that has a cafe.

I'd also work in a bookshop. The one from black books.

tamade · 05/11/2025 05:54

Visiting fellow at a materials science and engineering department, I'd like to lecture a short course on working in industry and collaborate on a couple of blue sky research topics, something very academic and fundamental.

And in the summer; instructor at an outdoors centre

i would be a part time waitress. Love chatting to people and I was a good waitress in my younger days. I was switched on! I was the waitress at 15 to ask you at the time of ordering what condiments you wanted before your food arrived! Genuinely don’t know why this isn’t a thing

Actually it’s asked when the food arrives so when you are away from the table for a few minutes getting the condiments they have a chance to check everything is okay with their meals. And when you are asking about condiments they almost always ask for something else extra too, straw, another drink, so you combine the run and save time.

Whichone2024 · 05/11/2025 05:59

An art therapist. Or a stunt person

A chaplain

I’m being made redundant this month and I don’t really need to find something with my current wage, I have been looking at PT jobs, if I can get away with it I’ve also been looking at physio training.

TattooStan · 05/11/2025 06:09

I'd work in a posh little shop, like a deli. Or work on the front desk at the local museum. Something extremely low stress, which I walk to, and am part of the community (the opposite to my current work, which is relatively stressful and requires a commute to a city).

EleanorReally · 05/11/2025 06:19

a dog walker or work in an animal sanctuary

Frequency · 05/11/2025 06:20

I'd either do care work or I would retrain to be a mental health nurse. I worked in care when DH was still alive, and I loved it. Unfortunately, it is not a wage you can raise a family on alone, so I had to retrain.

AhBiscuits · 05/11/2025 06:21

Something with animals. A rescue centre near us had a vacancy for a cat cuddler, basically spending time with the cats and trying to help them trust people.

RyanFudgingMurphy · 05/11/2025 06:23

I’d work in a museum or gallery, or a library. I’d be the one telling you about the exhibits, or the history of the place, or telling you to be quiet.

queenofwandss · 05/11/2025 06:25

I’d like to run a community group for creative activity. If money was no object then I’d do this as a community initiative, if I still need some money then maybe a
pottery painting or sewing cafe.

I like that! I would also love it if the waiting staff remember who orders what and just efficiently place it in front of the correct person when it arrives. None of this announcing "the salmon...??" as everyone looks blankly at everyone else. I love quiet professional efficiency!

Stade197 · 05/11/2025 06:26

I'd love to work around small children. When I had DS a few years ago I thought about retraining to work in a nursery as its something I'd love to do, but when looking into it nursery staff just aren't paid enough, I needed to be able to earn more than they get

Yamamm · 05/11/2025 06:26

Maybe a guide in a cathedral or stately home. Learning all the fun facts and meeting people. Getting a few steps in and working in a beautiful building.

Last time I went to a cathedral there was a whole clutch of volunteer guides waiting for some customers so it must be a popular gig!

DarkForces · 05/11/2025 06:35

Wine taster
Holiday tester
I could combine the two and be a wine tour tester

I work in a museum and it's actually very stressful - especially for colleagues on the front desk! Unhappy visitors because some tech element in the exhibition doesn't work, rowdy school groups, generally poor organisation because everyone else who works there is arty farty and no good at process management so no one remembers to tell them anything. By far the most stressful job I've had!

Ours is a sweet little market town museum and would honestly be extremely chilled.

ItsAWonderfulLifeforMe · 05/11/2025 06:42

Following with interest. Sahm returning to work with no idea what to do for the rest of my life but no real financial pressures to earn lots

ChimpanzeeThatMonkeyNews · 05/11/2025 06:47

Something low stress for me.

PruthePrune · 05/11/2025 06:50

Spot squeezer/blackhead remover - I would pay to do that job. Yes I am a sporner.

SparklyGlitterballs · 05/11/2025 06:54

I'd work at an animal sanctuary or rescue centre. Not a zoo though, as I hate seeing animals caged up just for people to gawp at.

Second choice would be a book shop, because I love books. I'd like to have one of those little 'community library' book cases in my front garden (like they have in the US) for people to take/leave a book, but too many light fingered people where I live who would just empty the thing in one go.

IDontHateRainbows · 05/11/2025 06:56

I'd set up a little vintage and retro shop and spend my time sourcing unique and unusual items to sell in it, and make it a really cool place to hang out. Easy enough if I didn't have to turn a profit!
