Are you surpsied at this weather for November?

It's 14C. Up north of all places and it is 6:30pm in November. Are you surpsied as this time last year was about 11 or 12C. Do you think this is the norm now. What do you think will happen at Christmas as it got up to 11C on Christmas Day last year here and the year before it was 11 too. I've heard of worse unseasonal weather. 29C in most places in October 2011 and a 10C day in West Yorkshire in June 2017 (or was it 16). Is this normal for November. Is this also good to put the heating on as when it only got to 13/14 in June 2024 people thought that was cold (albiet it was the daytime) and central heating was on (went to single digits at night if I remeber correctly). But in November it's mild at 14C

I’m in London and still had tomatoes ripened on the vine in my garden at the weekend.

I think they are the last though,

I have more ripening in a paper bag.

I have herbs in containers and my mint is still growing - it usually has disappeared by now.

Absolutely mad isn't it. I cut all my strawberries back at the beginning of September but I think next year I'll have to keep an eye on the forecast a bit more and wait until the temperature really drops if we get another autumn like this one.

This time last year I was sitting outside with a cup of tea or at least in the day time. My fb has reminded me. So it was mild last year too.
However, this weeks warmth is due to the tail of the hurricane that hit Jamaica.

I am not arguing that climate change isn’t real, sure it is but it’s not a sudden thing. It’s slow. We are in general warming up, but this mild period doesn’t concern me at all.
We had snow here a couple of weeks ago (rural Scotland)

This is it. Every change in the weather is not itself evidence of climate change. But all the evidence shows it is happening, and really taking hold in some parts of the world- we will follow. If anything the doom-mongering about every warm spell is counter productive as it makes people think they can draw global conclusions from their own back yard. The real message should be 'enjoy our glorious temperate weather while we can'.

I've just read Jane Austen's letters - moaning about wet summers and mild winters happened more than two centuries ago!

Office365Error · 05/11/2025 08:20

Based on temps I saw going back to 2009 it's not that unusual. Few hears low, couple years high and repeat

squashyhat · 05/11/2025 08:23

At the moment I'm very grateful. Our boiler has packed up and a new one can't be fitted for a couple of weeks. So I'm happy with the mild weather and a large log pile.

It’s climate change. It’s extremely frightening. Look at what is happening to migrating birds for example.

What’s happening ??

starofthecountydown · 05/11/2025 08:30

I remember taking my children to the seaside on Boxing Day in 2011 because the weather was so mild. I think it was about 14 degrees. Not exactly bucket and spade weather but it was surreal wandering along a beach in NI the day after Christmas without a force 9 gale and horizontal rain. My sons were racing around a play park in the dark (about 5.30pm) and it was packed. It was a lovely experience, but I do remember having a conversation with DP about climate change and both of us agreeing that we felt a bit uneasy.

Irenesortof · 05/11/2025 08:34

Its global warming. Along with the storms and hurricanes. The climate has become unpredictable.

Really? I remember September's as always being lovely and warm still...guess it depends where you are in the county, and how long ago, this was best part of 35-40 years ago!

Yeah, same here (Midlands.) September has always been nice. Obviously not as hot as June, July, and August, but nice. Easily 15C to 20C on average, (some days) even at the end. We sometimes go on holiday at the end of September, (in the UK, Lake District, or Peak District or North Wales,) and it's always nice.

I am sometimes walking around with jeans and a sleeveless T-shirt on, no umbrella, and sandals. Cool at night though. Like 8 degrees C windchill/10 or 11 temperature. Doesn't usually rain. We went away 7-13 of September several years ago, and on a couple of the days it was 22-23C.

Also, Halloween has been warm for about a decade now (and 'Bonfire Night'.) I was walking around the town last November without anything on top other than a bra and a short sleeved t-shirt, and it was the middle of November.

Some people - women mostly (wrapped in 5 layers, including a huge winter coat, a bobble hat, and gloves,) were looking at me as if I was bonkers, and asking 'aren't you COLD?!' NO! it's 18 degrees C. You don't need to wrap up in November if it's 18 bloody degrees C Margaret! I would have suffocated in some of the outfits some people had on!

I will agree though (with some) that the Autumn months (October and November especially,) used to be colder than it is now. But as others have said, it seems to be really cold in January and February now. It's like the seasons have adjusted or moved about or something!!! The temperature is due to be 18C today too! Like I said, it was last year too (in November,) but I don't recall temperatures at this time of year being so mild, til quite recently (last 10-12 years.) It was definitely colder pre 2010s... I still maintain that September has always been quite OK though. More like 'end of Summer' rather than Autumn...

I don't know where the posters live who are claiming it's 2 degrees C right now. Even in Wick in Scotland (almost at the top of the UK) it's 8 C!

This. Isn't this warm weather with some intense rain in places the remnants of Melissa?

Melissa broke up and dissipated into low systems before it got to us. We've got lows dragging warm air up from the south, that's really all that's happening.

While climate change is real and happening, this is just one of those blips, where air masses and the jet stream combine to make weather feel unseasonable. I'd recommend that everyone follows the Met Office over on YouTube - they put out a lot of very informative videos that explain what's going on out there.

IDontHateRainbows · 05/11/2025 10:03

November can be anything, as can May. It'll soon be freezing no doubt.

2 degrees here. I've just ordered some pram gloves so I can still feel my fingers after a walk.

What are pram gloves? Are they different to normal gloves?

WhatATimeToBeAlive · 05/11/2025 13:00

I've still got roses in the garden (south coast), we're cutting the grass. I'm sitting in the house with no heating on and wearing a t-shirt. It's madness for November.

They attach to the handlebars! I wear regular gloves too, but still find that my knuckles end up red raw and aching. I think it's because I live in a very windy area. It freezes me to the bone!

I attached a picture but it may take a few minutes to load.

Tell that to those facing the brunt of it- Jamaica most recently. Look at what is happening in Antarctica. It is actual madness to deny climate change.

The climate has changed continually throughout time. Is there any actual unbiased evidence that it is now caused by human activity rather than naturally occurring?
Unfortunately, there are so many vested interests, and so much money involved, that it’s hard to know the truth. So many experts have been silenced if they have a different opinion to the required one, and many others only funded if they come to a particular conclusion. I have no idea what the truth of the matter is, I am just saying that when money and power are involved, it distorts matters.

coldiris · 05/11/2025 13:08

It is as they say unseasonally warm but I think I was more surprised by how cold and miserable last year was. Where I am, we literally had no more than maybe 2-3 weeks of sun in total for the entire year and even then it was here and there rather than consistent. The rest of the year was grey, dull, miserable and depressing.

the80sweregreat · 05/11/2025 13:10

Bonfire night ‘ back in my day’ was always cold and frosty, glove weather. It’s now much warmer

Sezzybunny · 05/11/2025 13:12

For me I think this weather is just great as my heating bill won’t go up much this month, I owe so much and trying hard to not turn the dam heating on . Much love everyone xxx

looselegs · 05/11/2025 13:14

15 degrees here. Was only 13 degrees overnight last night.
Too warm- i hate the summer heat so was looking forward to cold weather. Still sweaty- menopausal- and haven't even got my boots out yet!

smallglassbottle · 05/11/2025 13:17

My thyme and hyssop are having a field day and keep on flowering.

Edwinstarrihavefaithinyou · 05/11/2025 15:37
