Is there some trick?
dr online told me to present at surgery and not leave without being seen. Of course they sent me away. I haven’t been seen.
its something I need medication for today . If I leave it - which I can’t - I know I’ll be bollocked when I eventually see a Dr for not getting a prescription and treating it sooner.
online private gp won’t give me the prescription as she hasn’t seen me and says I need to be seen today.

What exactly am I supposed to do?

yabu= of course you should see a Dr, there are ways of doing it (if you say this please say how)
yanbu= no, healthcare basically does not exist in this country, take your symptoms to chat gpt and then rob a pharmacy

You'll need to phone out of hours GP if your GP can't see you.

Newstartplease24 · 03/11/2025 11:45

I mean I wouldn’t mind if you could just buy prescription drugs. I’d like to see a Dr. it would be safer to see a Dr and frankly I’d appreciate the attention. But given that you cant, why can’t we self medicate? It’s not fair having this fiction that benevolent wise ones will dish the meds out when you can never ever see one

Where I live I’d call 111 and ask for a GP apt at the nearby urgent treatment centre as my own GP wouldn’t see me and they’d refer me and I’d be seen on the day.

Whoevenarethey · 03/11/2025 11:45

Is it something you have on repeat prescription? If so a call to the reception staff and be asked to put through to the prescription administrator.

Newstartplease24 · 03/11/2025 11:46

It’s not out of hours. There is no out of hours gp. I tried 111 to get to something like tjat and it sent me back to the gp

If it's medication that is already recommended by your GP then you can get it through NHS 111. They can access your GP notes, contact your GP themselves & often have access to appointments that aren't available to public l.

If it's a repeat prescription medication you have run out of them a pharmacy can give you an emergency supply without a prescription as long as you are opted in to sharing your basic GP record.

coldiris · 03/11/2025 11:50

I'd request an urgent appointment. There may be a bit of a wait but hopefully you will still get one.

CuboidRectangle · 03/11/2025 11:50

It’s an impossible circular mess and a total postcode lottery both with the gp and whether 111 can sort it instead. I’m sorry you’re dealing with this. If you can go private (which you mentioned) can you get a face to face private appointment instead?

WalterWexler · 03/11/2025 11:50

What medication is it OP?

user1471538275 · 03/11/2025 11:55

Why can't you see the private GP?

They can't tell you that you must be seen by an NHS GP - if they think there is an issue, they should treat it themselves - this can be done by video call or through telephone/written consultation.

Otherwise different GPs have different systems - most have a triage system to ensure that the most unwell people are seen first and the less unwell wait.

There should be no way round it, although people certainly try - is it something you can use pharmacy 1st for?

Northquit · 03/11/2025 11:56

Ring the doctors. Whilst you're there. Explain to the receptionist that you need to have some medication sorted out by the doctor and that you have been advised by NHS 111 to get it now (Assuming it was NHS 111)

Sit on a chair and wait.

GetOffTheRoof · 03/11/2025 11:58

What do you mean by "a doctor online"?

What is it you need? Can a pharmacist assist?

TwoTuesday · 03/11/2025 11:59

Go to A and E if no joy from 111, pharmacy, a private GP, or your surgery.

user1471538275 · 03/11/2025 12:00

@Serencwtch That's not how the 111 prescription usually works although there can be some variation among the different call centres.

You can request an emergency prescription out of hours from a pharmacist, if there is already an ongoing repeat prescription set up by the GP.

In hours, you contact your GP.

If it's a new request for medication, contact your GP.

@YSianiFlewog OOH is usually only available through 111 and does not begin until GPs officially close at 18.30

EleanorReally · 03/11/2025 12:00

i just put in an admin request or at least a prescription request

user1471538275 · 03/11/2025 12:01

@TwoTuesday Terrible advice - go to the Emergency Department!!!!

Why do you think it's an emergency.

Sometimes people just have to wait.

It’s not out of hours. There is no out of hours gp. I tried 111 to get to something like tjat and it sent me back to the gp

Try again.
111 was the advice I was given too in a similar case.
You need to tell them that 1- you’ve seen a private GP who says you need the meds today and 2- you’ve tried your GP and there are no appointment s available.
You’re not asking for urgent care (even though depending on the meds, it migut well be!). You’re asking for out of hours.

My GP actually set an appointment with OHH fir me when they couldn’t fit me in and they agree I really to see someone (I needed a review first BP meds as I couldn’t take the ones prescribed due to side effects).
I don’t think they like doing though that because it highlights they dint see people in a time it manner….

itbemay1 · 03/11/2025 12:17

Whoever the Dr was that told you to be seen and get meds should have sorted this either directly with the GP if it needs to come from them or have sorted themselves. It shouldn’t be on you to play GP lotto, but also it’s not down to the GP to sort meds for another Drs consult.

@Newstartplease24 , you are not qualified and might harm yourself. Go to the walk in centre or call 111.

user1471538275 · 03/11/2025 12:22

@MaurineWayBack It's not out of hours - it's in hours until 18.30

It is unusual for GPs to book OOH, but possible - but either way OP would still need to contact their own GP and wait for response

RosesAndHellebores · 03/11/2025 12:29

I second going to the practice and explaining F2F. Ask to speak to the practice manager and explain what you have been advised. Ask them to note they have refused GP access despite that advice having been given by another clinician.

it’s a shit show.

BeautifulSongsofLove · 03/11/2025 13:20

Icanthinkformyselfthanks · 03/11/2025 12:20

@Newstartplease24 , you are not qualified and might harm yourself. Go to the walk in centre or call 111.

Again, this may not be the correct advice.

The walk-in centre won't be able to help if this is a new prescription for a long-term condition which GPs manage, or for an illness that practitioners don't manage

Newstartplease24 · 03/11/2025 13:22

I’m back at the practice. I have been there once already and faced a very sneery receptionist and I’m afraid I was a bit tearful. Second attempt.
queuing outside now

the range of responses on this thread highlights how difficult the system is to understand. Perhaps different in different places. Or just opaque
