Is there some trick?
dr online told me to present at surgery and not leave without being seen. Of course they sent me away. I haven’t been seen.
its something I need medication for today . If I leave it - which I can’t - I know I’ll be bollocked when I eventually see a Dr for not getting a prescription and treating it sooner.
online private gp won’t give me the prescription as she hasn’t seen me and says I need to be seen today.

What exactly am I supposed to do?

yabu= of course you should see a Dr, there are ways of doing it (if you say this please say how)
yanbu= no, healthcare basically does not exist in this country, take your symptoms to chat gpt and then rob a pharmacy

@Serencwtch That's not how the 111 prescription usually works although there can be some variation among the different call centres.

You can request an emergency prescription out of hours from a pharmacist, if there is already an ongoing repeat prescription set up by the GP.

In hours, you contact your GP.

If it's a new request for medication, contact your GP.

@YSianiFlewog OOH is usually only available through 111 and does not begin until GPs officially close at 18.30

I've genuinely had prescriptions done that way many times through a 111 prescriber. They have been able to access the doctors management plan in my GP record & issue an electronic prescription to a local pharmacy without me having to be seen.

On the odd occasion where the NHS 111 clinician has needed GP approval they have spoken to the surgery & a GP has called me within a couple of hours.

NHS 111 is not one organization but made up of different service contracts so will be variable .

You can actually buy most antibiotics from online pharmacies these days @Newstartplease24

I'd get some in, for the next inevitable time you need them in a hurry.

It shouldn't be like this but it is.

Newstartplease24 · 03/11/2025 21:56

You can’t get “most” antibiotics at pharmacies? There are limited short term courses for specific things through pharmacies. I don’t think it’s most. If it doesn’t work for you, these quick fixes just waste time while the infection builds and arguably increase antibiotic resistance. I wish we could just see bloody doctors.

I’ll be doing my best to get some in, on prescription, all the same .

If it's medication that is already recommended by your GP then you can get it through NHS 111. They can access your GP notes, contact your GP themselves & often have access to appointments that aren't available to public l.

If it's a repeat prescription medication you have run out of them a pharmacy can give you an emergency supply without a prescription as long as you are opted in to sharing your basic GP record.

I tried this for antidepressants, they wouldn't do it, I had to call my doctor and ask them to send a prescription through, but it was too late to get it to the chemist in time, so I didn't get my medication 🤷‍♀️ the system is broken and nothing works anymore. I'm scared I'll get seriously ill one day.

ThisZanyPinkSquid · 03/11/2025 22:33

So if it is a UTI you can present at a pharmacy and get antibiotics if uncomplicated and not been 3 times in 6 months. Just when you said it can happen when you are run down I put 2 and 2 together (most likely got 5 but trying to help 😆)

otherwise I would suggest standing at the GP practice whilst also phoning for an appointment. It’s worrying to see so many people having the same issues 😥

It’s not a regular medication. It’s not on repeat. It’s something I get sometimes that requires antibiotics. Which are prescribed on a case by case basis. The nature of the thing is that I tend to get it when run down ie busy and under ridiculous pressure. Like now. It’s stressful. It happens every now and then that I have to out my life on hold just when I can’t afford to, to treat something that really shluld be nipped in the bud. I can’t go on like this. No way could I be considered to have a chronic illness was or be disabled but trying to act like someone with no health issues - just responding to the needs of the moment - is taking its toll on my body because I can’t see a Dr when I need to

there has to be something I can do in advance or some way I can plan or have something in place. I can’t live like this

You can buy antibiotics online without prescription. You may need to lie about having a toothache or cystitis. There are loads of online chemist's which will do that for amoycillin and one or two others. I keep amoxycillin on standby for exactly the reasons you're talking about.,

That's an awful thing to suggest, antibiotics are prescription only to try and prevent resistance. If you use antibiotics when they're not needed, or the wrong ones, or for the incorrect length of time then the chance of the bacteria becoming resistant increases. Antibiotics resistance is already an issue, please don't make it worse.

But they aren't prescription only. Chemists, nurses and dentists hand out amoxycillin all the time.

Would you prefer people to have infections run out of control while they try to get to see a doctor?

I think you maybe don't understand just how bad the NHS is right now.

Everyone should obviously always take the whole course.

Pharmacists, nurses and dentists still prescribe those to you though.

It's not just a Dr who can write a prescription. Anyone who has done the appropriate training can.

If it’s cystitis and you’re getting it repeatedly, some GPs will prescribe you a course in advance. Worth asking about when you are seen.

This sounds incredibly frustrating. I used to have something similar- I used to get UTIs at the drop of a hat when stressed or run down. It was so regular and I could self diagnose that the doctor would just put the prescription behind the desk for me when requested after I had a conversation with the receptionist and I didn't need to see them, as long as I dropped a wee sample off. I'm not sure if your problem is similar, but I'd suggest making an appt with your GP (for whenever you can) to discuss how you're going to manage your condition going forward if you can't get a same day appt when needed

It's very handy to have some on standby. I keep three different kinds in the cupboard, in case of needing them at the weekend.
