To assume the cat is actually this much of an arsehole on purpose??

Back from holiday today and the cat is AWOL. Been back about 5 hours with no sign of her. She has form for this.

We went away a few years ago and my Mum came in to feed her. Cat disappeared for several days which led to my mum losing a lot of sleep and planning how she was going to tell us she'd lost the cat (DM is a worrier).

To avoid the trauma to DM we asked a friend to feed her next time we went away and friend didn't see the cat for the whole 10 days, but had to assume all was ok-ish as some cat was coming in to eat the food. I really didn't enjoy the holiday as friend was honest about the cat situation (even though she took to spending hours at our house to try and spot the cat) and 10 days of no sightings was enough to remind me I am my mother's daughter. When we got back it was about 4 hours before the cat returned.

I pushed that next time we spent money on a cattery so i'd at least know where she was but cattery owner was honest on pick up that she hadn't settled and had seemed quite scared the whole time. Cat shouted at us constantly for 48 hours when we finally got her home.

So this holiday we asked a friend's daughter to stay for the week, thinking that would be nicer for the cat to be at home, but with company. She apparently did stay around and friend's daughter took some nice photos of her but now we're back.... crickets.

This is a cat who spends all day and half the night on my pillow when we're all at home.

So,
You are being unreasonable = you should be worried, you heartless human monster.

You are not being unreasonable = she's punishing you and she knows exactly what she's doing. Hold your ground.

Glad she's home. Mine always had a habit of hiding from pet sitters.

Worse asshole I had though was the first one. Wimsey was a fat greedy thing and didn't mind being locked in all day when we were at work but when you came home suddenly you'd find him scarfing down all his food and then crying like he'd been starving for days.

He seemed to be ok to be locked in with enough food/water/litter tray for the duration if we were away over night so we tried to stretch that to a longer spell away. He did not approve.

We returned home to the usual him gobbling any food left. He then proceeded to show us the tail and basically stomp about blatantly ignoring us. And then I went into the bedroom to put our travel stuff away and he followed me and jumped on top of the dressing table and sat beside a water glass. He looked at me and gave the glass a little push. I was on the far side of the room so just said "no!" He looked at me again and gave it another little push to show he meant business. I tried to leap across the bed to get to where he was and he just slowly pushed the glass the rest of the way off the dresser never breaking eye contact. He then gracefully jumped down and sashayed out of the room. I'm sure he would have blown me a raspberry if it was possible.

My old girl loved to go into the workshop of the business behind my house - think she liked seeing the guys work. She got locked in so many times (the first over a weekend where I was frantically trying to find her), that the owner said he should just give me my own key!

Another cat I had - came home from visiting a very local friend to find her posted on the local FB page as ‘lovely homeless cat, very friendly but obviously starving). Little bugger had slipped her collar, followed me to my friends house, then called loudly, causing her neighbours to come out, whereupon she posed as starving and in immediate need (she had her evening food just before we went out).

Shes not an arsehole, she is just scared and upset when her family, from her point of view, vanish.

Make a big fuss of her and give her lots of treats.

Many years ago I had a cat who would show disapproval by shitting on my pillow.

You're getting off lightly

Edited

Literally ALL of my life .. EVERYONE has been ‘shitting on my pillow’ at least in the figurative sense !

Agreed.

Many years ago I had a cat who would show disapproval by shitting on my pillow. WTF did you do to that cat @QueenClinomania ?

My sins were many.

Went out for the day

Bought an unacceptable flavour food

Went to work

Accidentally shut him outside and it started raining. That one was something else. He was at the patio door glaring at me. I opening the door, apologising profusely and he yelled at me as he stormed upstairs. I heard him yell every single step of the way up two flights to my bedroom. I knew what was going to happen .

My cat used to make a huge fuss when we came from holiday then ignore us for five days 🤔🤭 they know exactly what they are doing lol ----

She's home and also she's not an arsehole.

She was stuck in a garage. We had a very sleepless night listening to howling wind, pouring rain and fireworks; we knew by 1am that she wasn't sulking and something had to be wrong. Sat up watching the Diplomat (recommend) and then i went out at 7 to shake dreamies and wander about calling her. She called back and both myself, and the neighbour whose garage she was in could hear her. Very fortunate to find the right the right person up early on a Saturday!

Oh my goodness poor love. Im glad she's home ok.

ruethewhirl · 02/11/2025 13:59

First rule of cat arseholery: the cat is always being an arsehole on purpose. 😄

Glad she's reappeared though. She's a cutie (and looks very vocal)! 😻

Purplebunnie · 07/11/2025 16:49

She's the twin of one of cats. He is the most affectionate cat I have even come across, he just melts into you if you pick him up.

Glad she came back, we've also had similar with our look-a-like

defrazzled · 07/11/2025 16:51

Ours won't look at us for a few days when we get back from holiday. When DD was under 7 she was the same if I went out for an afternoon 😂

SillyCecilia · 07/11/2025 16:59

I keep mine inside when we are away and just have people coming to feed them. Glad she is back OP.

crackofdoom · 07/11/2025 17:09

My cats don't hunt much any more, but whenever I go away there will be a dead shrew left pointedly in the middle of the kitchen floor when I come back.

(I've just thought: are they leaving treats around to try and tempt me out of my hiding place? 😆)

Cats are dickheads, that’s what makes them so brilliant.
