To ask about weight loss

I’m trying to lose weight. Last Friday I weighed 11s 4lb. I’ve totally cut out all chocs biscuits sweets etc and have been very healthy following the slimming world diet (loosely following), but generally just being very very healthy and walking

however I weighed myself in boots this morning and I’m now up by 1lb which I don’t understand apart from I drank a bottle of wine last night but surely that wouldn’t have made a massive difference? It was rose barefoot white Zinfandel

You won’t see much difference week to week. Losing weight is a long term thinv

wine is very calorific though surprisingly fairly low carb if a very dry white. If you want to continue being a bit of a boozer then you might find a very low carb diet works better for weight loss than a low calorie one.

different scales may give slightly varying amounts.

barefoot wine is a bit nasty.

perhaps you need a big poo.

keepcalmanddance · 30/10/2025 10:13

But I’ve put on rather than lost which is ridiculous after all the work I’ve put in (apart from the wine)

You won’t have lost any weight yet…if only it were that easy 😅 that 1lb is probably a poo!

Weight loss is a long term thing and should be judged on measurements and not your mass.

Also, an entire bottle of wine is a huge amount of calories and a LOT of alcohol! Alcohol can cause water retention.

Just cut out UPFs from your diet and will make a huge difference.

Office365Error · 30/10/2025 10:14

Salt, alcohol, montly cycle etc absolute affect how much water you hold so will show on scales.
I could be no loss, bit up some weeks, next week 4 pounds down🤷 and repeat

keepcalmanddance · 30/10/2025 10:16

What are UPFs?

Wine isn’t allowed surely on slimming world? Not a whole bottle anyway. Personally i’d just calorie count.

keepcalmanddance · 30/10/2025 10:18

If it’s a different scales then the weight will likely be unreliable. No scale is spot on unless constantly checked and recalibrated.

themerchentofvenus · 30/10/2025 10:19

keepcalmanddance · 30/10/2025 10:16

What are UPFs?

Ultra processed foods.

They tend to not only be much higher in calories (fat and sugar), they are also less filling so you eat far more.

By switching to less processed foods, you will find that you can eat as much as you like but don't NEED to eat as much as you don't get so hungry.

keepcalmanddance · 30/10/2025 10:20

Yes it was a different scales.. I’m back to slimming world tomorrow so will see what the weight is then

It's not just about salad. You can have what you like but just avoid the heavily processed foods.

Bjorkdidit · 30/10/2025 10:20

There's loads of variables in both those measurements.

Different scales, different time in your menstrual cycle, different hydration levels, different amount of food/waste in your digestive system, different clothes, different time of day all introduce uncertainty which combines to mean that each measurement is only accurate within a few pounds so not a reliable indicator of how much body fat you've lost in a week, which is what you're trying to measure.

Tagyoureit · 30/10/2025 10:21

Alcohol will bloat you out. Weight goes up and down from one day to the next so just keep going and you will eventually see a difference.

But you say you're loosely following SW but then also say being very, very healthy but then drank a bottle of wine. Which is it?

Im not saying you cant drink or eat what you like, but don't try to kid yourself. Are you weighing your food and calculating calories or just eyeballing your portions? Are thinking that because you walked more, you can eat more?
The only way ive lost weight is remain in a calorie deficit and not allow extra calories earned from exercising.

Alcohol messes about with your water weight quite a lot. A bottle of wine is also about 800 calories the same as an evening meal.

keepcalmanddance · 30/10/2025 10:22

I wore the same clothes today to weigh with shoes and socks off as last week, was roughly the same time of day as last week

Bjorkdidit · 30/10/2025 10:22

Why would you need to 'eat salad all the time'? Take your Slimming World free foods (meat, fish, pulses, eggs, grains and plenty of fruit and veg) and make them into endless real meals like curry and rice, stir fries, roasts, soups, omelettes, chillis, etc etc etc.

HairsprayBabe · 30/10/2025 10:23

Alcohol makes you hold on to more water, a bottle of wine has around 500-700 calories, not enough to make you gain a lb of fat.
But the water it makes you hold onto will have had an impact.

Try a fast day 5:2 style after drinking and it should shoot down.

SpiralSister · 30/10/2025 10:23

The thing is, it’s not what you haven’t eaten (being good) but what you have, that causes your weight gain or loss. You know, when you turned down the cake, the doughnut, the takeaway. But still ate more than you needed.

The only thing that will work (and that will be over time) is to be in a calorie deficit. This is different for everyone, and you can work out what you should be eating with one of the many online calculators. You then stick to these calories, and if you don’t wish to be starving and miserable, you choose foods that are satisfying and nutritious.

Wine is v calorific and has v little nutrition, so it doesn’t fit well into diets.

All of this is hard work and takes time. WLIs help massively, should you be eligible for them and can afford them. They make the whole undertaking easier to stick to.

I wish you luck.

keepcalmanddance · 30/10/2025 10:24

@SpiralSisterwhat are WLIs?

OP posts:
hididdlyho · 30/10/2025 10:24

Weight can fluctuate by half a stone (possibly more) at any given time, that's considered 'normal'. Scales definitely vary as well, so it's best to weigh yourself at the same time of day on the same set, to get the most accurate idea.

Sadly alcohol is very calorific, wine is high in sugar as well. You're probably looking at around 600+ calories in an average bottle, so that's basically like eating an extra meal.

Buscake · 30/10/2025 10:24

I’ve been on a huge weight loss journey and weigh myself twice a day - evening and first thing in the morning. Some days I will increase by 1-2kg from am to pm, but i go by the am weight to track how I’m doing. One week is never going to be enough, like others have said it takes time and dedication. I also didn’t restrict myself completely as it wouldn’t have been sustainable. I’ve been eating better and moving more since March now and lost 30kg (on WLIs too). But if you’d told me in March I’d be working out 6-7 times a week and eating in such a calorie controlled way I would have cried at how miserable it would have sounded. As my weight loss has gone I have gradually increased exercise and my eating habits have naturally improved - I’m now used to what I eat and how much etc. the reality is my portions were way too big and way too much crap. I stopped drinking about a year ago and this has helped too - feel a lot more with it, less sluggish etc. but like I said, I wouldn’t go all in at once with it or it may feel impossible or too overwhelming.

Elasticated trousers it is then😂

CarolwithoutanE · 30/10/2025 10:34

I am weighing in daily to to keep an eye on patterns and just to keep me on track.

I had a few drinks over the weekend and ‘gained’ 3lb. That was a Friday to Sunday weigh in. Now I have been doing these regular weigh ins since May so I was expecting that gain, if not more. It was slowly dropping over the week, and I am now back to pre weekend drinks weight.

It took nearly 3 days to get rid of the extra which is due to water retention of sorts with the alcohol.

I have lost a stone and a half since may, with a month off and an all inclusive holiday, which yes, I over indulged on. It takes some bloody doing but I after a couple of weeks it becomes easier to manage.
