£50 on a chocolate advent calendar!

Frostu · 28/10/2025 21:57

So today I was at a friends home. She got a delivery whilst I was there and opened it, it was her family’s advent calendars, they looked really lovely so I had a little google when I got home.
The children’s advent calendars were £50! The children are only 3 and 4 and it’s not as those these are insanely fancy people, they live in a normal town, their oldest is only in a private school as that is where my friend works and gets a hefty discount.

AIBU to think £50 on a chocolate advent calendar is beyond bonkers, it doesn’t seem particularly special and I know my kids would prefer dairy milk or milky bar chocolate anyway. I really don’t understand the point.

I get that people sometimes spend a lot on other types of advent calendars which to me makes more sense but this is just a chocolate advent calendar! It’s over £2 per piece of chocolate at that price!

I would not be happy if someone in my family spent 50mpound on one of these. I couldn't be bothered about anyone else though.

Slothey · 28/10/2025 22:03

I wouldn’t spend that much myself. But looking up what your ‘friend’ paid then bitching about her online isn’t nice.

FastTurtle · 28/10/2025 22:04

Stop being so judgemental.

Comefromaway · 28/10/2025 22:05

How old are the children? And what were the calendars.

dd would absolutely have appreciated an expensive calendar, she has always had sophisticated tastes. Ds much prefers haribo

dh has treated me to a Neuhaus calendar this year.

Their ages are in the OP.

3 and 4.

They are only 3 and 4 so I’m sure they will have no concept of the cost of the calendars. These were the Läderach kids ones.

Their money, their choice.

Arlanymor · 28/10/2025 22:10

We all have different tastes I guess. I wouldn't fork out that for an advent calendar because (a) I'm fairly indifferent about chocolate and (b) I can think of much better things to spend money on. But if that's what she and her family like then crack on. I don't understand why people spend thousands on handbags either... if they are anything like me they will drop them in a puddle, have a pen leak all over the interior, etc. I think the most expensive handbag I have ever bought was around the £90 mark. Same goes for sunglasses which I will sit on, lose in the sea, leave on the train...

TeaAndTattoos · 28/10/2025 22:11

It’s up to her how much she spends on her kids advent calendars not you. Stop being a judgemental busybody.

canklesmctacotits · 28/10/2025 22:13

How is any of this your business?

Hie do you know she paid for them and they weren’t a gift?

How do you know she didn’t use vouchers?

Are you jealous?

Again, how is this any of your business?

updabanff · 28/10/2025 22:14

Live and let live, and mind your own business. That's like me telling you that you sound like a poor person, or me walking into Louis Vuitton and telling them that they are ridiculous to even exist when I can buy a handbag on Temu for £1. People can spend their money however they want.

Tryingatleast · 28/10/2025 22:15

They could have had a voucher or something? Maybe there was a deal on?

strawgoh · 28/10/2025 22:17

The whole point of an advent calendar is Advent. It is not about indulging your pre-schoolers with ridiculously over-priced sweets. If you have that much money, then give your little dc an Advent calendar that costs £5 instead of £50 and donate the rest to a charity which actually helps the homeless and destitute.

I don't care how rich you are, spending that much money on an advent calendar for little kids is totally absurd.

Onelifeonly · 28/10/2025 22:17

What does it have to do with you? Their money, their choice. I don't feel this post is what MN is meant to be about.

I was going to say YANBU, but then I saw Läderach. Suddenly seems like good value. Off to see if I can get myself one.

Comefromaway · 28/10/2025 22:22

Ooh, I love Laderach. It’s so nice.

Toddlertiredp · 28/10/2025 22:27

Bet it tastes amazing though!

I feel the same.
PP coming along crucifying the OP for having an opinion and saying that folks can do whatever they like with their money. Of course they can, but it's such a pointless over-indulgence. I couldn't do it either over some shitty chocolates, and I certainly wouldnt want to be instilling such "values" in my children. The stupidity of people!

Blondeshavemorefun · 28/10/2025 22:32

Yes obv £50 on young kids and chocolate when could be a £3 dairy milk does seem a lot

for adults yes they may enjoy and savour

seems wasteful for toddlers

but it’s their money

NoSoupForU · 28/10/2025 22:34

It depends on a lot of things. I don't eat much chocolate so would feel fine about spending the equivalent of a couple of quid a day for something indulgent.

Where is your evidence that the friend doesn't also donate to charity? It isn't an either/or thing. Or perhaps they were a gift from grandparents?

Läderach is not 'some shitty chocolates' either. They are works of art.

Surely Lauderach and Neuhaus bought now will be stale by 1st December let alone 25 more days!

I would love if someone bought me these brands but it's not something I'd buy myself as it's far too expensive.

Are you just spending a few pound on Christmas basics this year and donating money to charity?

NaiceBalonz · 28/10/2025 22:46

Green isn't a good look on anyone, OP.

Would love to know what your dear friend would think of you posting this.

Every year Dh & Dd buy me some Laderach frishoggi for Christmas and I make it last a couple of months.
