Meanings behind songs that people don't seem to know...

Do you remember the Real Fires advert with the dog kissing the cat and the cat kissing a mouse? My mum brought it up the other day as one of their neighbours has just got a dog that looks identical to the one in the advertisement. Awww!

I couldn't quite remember the song that was the soundtrack so I looked it up later... it's Will You Love Me Tomorrow by The Shirelles and I brought it up on YouTube to listen to it. It's about a one night stand isn't it? I had no idea until now... there I was thinking it was a lovely warm anthem for chaste kisses between pets!

By the way, not remotely making a judgement about the topic, I've a had a few 'Shirelles' nights of my own in the past... I just never knew what it was about before. Have you had any similar revelations?!

Taylor Swift’s All Too Well

And I left my scarf there at your sister’s house
And you’ve still got it in your drawer even now
….
But you keep my old scarf from that very first week
Because it reminds you of innocence and it smells just like me
You can’t get rid of it
‘Cause you remember it all too well

Check out clips from YouTube in interviews about it they are hilarious 😂 Plus the very conscious decision to make the “scarf” red in the video. Hmmm….although a scarf seemingly does exist (not red though) me thinks not just about a literal scarf🧣👀

Cornflake Girl is about FGM. The lyrics are chilling once you know that

Edited

I can't reconcile the lyrics of this to anything.

I think they denied that? (whether truthfully or not... could well be the latter 😄) Unlike Hugh Cornwell who very frankly admitted that Golden Brown was 'about heroin and about a girl'... I don't think the Stranglers were ever that fussed about their public profile, tbf. 😄

Listen to the lyrics of perfect 10 with a smutty mind and it's pretty clear it's about sex

It does speak about sex, but it's about the fact that size doesn't matter, fat, thin, big cock or not, we love each other for each other, not for the size they are.

I never could either, but I just re-read them and I can now, with that context. Unfortunately. ('This is not really happening... you bet your life it is.') shudder

Goodness, I always thought that was a lovely but meaningless song!

Even with the lyrics
"Back it up twice
Now that fits nice
Grease it, spray it
Let me lubricate it"

Those lines in context might but the rest of the song is nonsense.

Quite and zero sex education either at my school, same era. A much beloved teacher did a myth busting session about this, drugs and suicide with us during what was meant to be an English lesson when we were about 15 (yes, you can get pregnant the first time etc) and although of course we thought we knew it all, some things still came as a revelation.

She said she didn't approve of the culture of pretending such things didn't exist because it wouldn't enable us to be safe, where knowledge would.

Apparently, at our school you got some proper sex ed if you did Biology as a course choice in Third Year. I didn't, so our sex ed in First Year consisted of our Science teacher explaining how flowers are pollinated and showing a film of locusts mating.

We were each told to bring in a daffodil from home, I kid you not.

thing47 · 29/10/2025 12:54

Going back to Madonna's Like A Prayer, i'm pretty sure the lines: 'in the midnight hour, I can feel your power' don't refer to a visit from the Holy Ghost 😀

Another one I don't think has been mentioned yet - Bryan Adams' classic Summer of 69 is not about the year!

Tonight’s the Night by Rod Stewart. Pretty obvious really but I’m sure people sang along to the chorus not really taking too much notice of the lyrics or the unsavoury ‘don’t deny your man’s desire’

Especially when he refers to her as his 'sweet virgin child'... barf

Always wondered if that's why Janet Jackson completely repackaged it as a threesome with a bloke and another woman!

PuzzlesonSaturday · 29/10/2025 12:56

I have always liked Fleetwood Mac's "Albatross" and - being instrumental - thought it would be a safe choice to play during the signing of the register at my wedding.

Fortunately, a friend pointed out (in advance) that the music was inspired by the poem "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" and therefore, entirely inappropriate for any part of a marriage ceremony! 😳

Afternoon Delight... blatantly obvious ditty about the joys of an afternoon shag but no one seemed to notice at the time

OMG this, I'd have been about 7 so obviously had no clue whatsoever. Nor about what the 'sky rockets in flight' were, obviously. 😄

(Edited to add: and if my memory serves me correctly it was a staple on Radio 2! 😄)

I'm always a bit surprised at what people don't know or what they can't figure out from song lyrics

I remember a poster here complaining that she thought the 1975 were really insipid and she gave "it's not living (if it's not with you)" as an example. How could you listen to that and not realise? I mean you might not specifically know that it's about heroin. But it's obviously not about a person!

now hoping somebody will sing the magic two words back at me...👂

and "pumped up kicks" they're literally singing "you better run, better run... faster than my bullet"

Edited

Selling petrol 😉

Re: the drug ed and sex ed, etc.

At our school, we didn't even get 'The Period Talk'. I found out about stick-on sanitary towels from either The Diana or The Jackie magazine. Even my mum didn't know about them. I showed her the ad and she took it to the chemist.

I Will Always Love You - played so often at weddings, but it’s a breakup song.

I remember a couple who had used Natalie Cole's 'I Live For Your Love' as one of the backing tracks for their wedding video. Presumably they just picked it for the title without listening to the lyrics, which are very clearly about a breakup!

I well believe it, I did Biology O and although we had to do various dissections (horrid) the main emphasis seemed to be on the life cycle of the frog, about as helpful as daffodils and locusts really. Have a vague memory of some people in other classes doing Human Biology CSE. I wonder if they fared better.

It all seems unbelievable now, doesn't it?

She has a crush on him and he is wisely telling her she's too young. Like the oft misquoted Gary Pucketts "Young Girl"
He's telling her to go home to her Mama

EndlessHolidayWashing · 29/10/2025 13:09

Might have already been commented on but isn't Hotel California by the Eagles about heroin use?

You must be of a similar vintage to me.
My mother put a pack of sanitary towels (complete with belt) in my bottom drawer saying "For when you need them"
I had absolutely no idea what she was talking about!

Chain Reaction by Diana Ross is about sex, possibly even a threesome.....
I'm in the middle of a chain reaction
You give me all the after midnight action
I want to get you where I can let you make all that love to me
I'm on a journey for the inspiration
To anywhere and there ain't no salvation
I need you to get me nearer to you
So you can set me free
We talk about love, love, love
We talk about love
We talk about love, love, love
We talk about love
You make me tremble when your hand moves lower
You taste a little then you swallow slower
Nature has a way of yielding treasure
Pleasure made for you, oh

Didn't realise what the song was about, but the line "To anywhere and there ain't no salvation" was always sung in our house as "For Eddie Waring there is no salvation" !

BigBoots67 · 29/10/2025 13:17

Many of the Weeknds popular tracks have heavy sexual or drug meanings 🤣

I Can’t Feel My Face was huge with the younger ones and was nominated for a Kids Choice Award or something, but that was about drugs 🤣

He later referenced the irony of it in another song.

Had we not had a visit from my Canadian cousins that year, I wouldn't have known that periods existed.

Mum had only told me to let her know if I ever saw blood when I went to the toilet. I thought that she was telling me to check for cancer... (I'd read an article about cancer in the middle pages of the Sunday Post - there was a regular 'Doc' feature there every week.)

I too was given the belt and hammock-pads...
