Meanings behind songs that people don't seem to know...

Do you remember the Real Fires advert with the dog kissing the cat and the cat kissing a mouse? My mum brought it up the other day as one of their neighbours has just got a dog that looks identical to the one in the advertisement. Awww!

I couldn't quite remember the song that was the soundtrack so I looked it up later... it's Will You Love Me Tomorrow by The Shirelles and I brought it up on YouTube to listen to it. It's about a one night stand isn't it? I had no idea until now... there I was thinking it was a lovely warm anthem for chaste kisses between pets!

By the way, not remotely making a judgement about the topic, I've a had a few 'Shirelles' nights of my own in the past... I just never knew what it was about before. Have you had any similar revelations?!

I only found out the story behind Tears in Heaven by Eric Clapton recently. Always a sad song but the story behind it is so so sad.

MotherofAdults · 29/10/2025 11:52

@AsTreesWalking so I have a tendency to conflate things in memory and I think I have somehow muddled it with and Monty Python & the Holy grail - so Graham Chapman in his his crusader tabard is clearly a Knight in white satin.

Sometimes I worry about the inside of my brain!

Runlikesomeoneleftgateopen · 29/10/2025 11:52

If this is goodbye, Mark knopfler and a lady l can't remember but lovely voice.
I only found out recently about twin towers terrorist attacks, based on messages people left for loved ones.
So sad.

I can get those lyrics and it's incredibly sad but makes sense to me.

I am very literal so it never occurs to me that lyrics mean anything other than the obvious.

The song is about his toddler son who fell from the window of a high rise block of flats.

Escape is not about Pina coladas 😂
It's about both husband and wife putting an ad in the lonely hearts column and meeting each other there

Also
Beetlebum is about heroin
Lola is about a crossdresser

I knew a couple years ago who named their son Luca...after the Suzanne Vega song about child abuse. I never understood that at all and wonder what he thought when he found out the origin of his name.

I have a Luca but definitely not after this song! It’s a sobering listen once you realise what it’s about.

TheIceBear · 29/10/2025 12:04

Honestly I think people who have used drugs may not even get the drug references in some songs because they are vague and could be referring to other things.

Newname71 · 29/10/2025 12:05

A Little Piece of Heaven by Avenged Sevenfold!! 😱😱😱

CloudSky · 29/10/2025 12:06

May have been said by now, but Enola Gay is about a nuclear bomb and also some people don’t realise that Bastille - Pompeii is genuinely about Pompeii!!

That's the one I was just about to post about, especially the way the jaunty tune to Enola Gay has been used recently in adverts including one earlier this year about some new summer clothing advert. Enola Gay was the name of the plane that dropped the Hiroshima bomb, not the best way to encourage me!

Tonight’s the Night by Rod Stewart. Pretty obvious really but I’m sure people sang along to the chorus not really taking too much notice of the lyrics or the unsavoury ‘don’t deny your man’s desire’

Seasons in the Sun … I love that song and sang along quite merrily without actually listening to the lyrics

I can't sing this without singing the version we sang in primary school!

We had joy, we had fun,
Flicking bogeys at the sun.
But the sun got to hot,
And the bogeys turned to snot!

I have a strong suspicion the George Formby song " with me little ukulele in me hand" isn't about his little ukulele.

He normally played the banjolele. It's not about that either.

I heard that George Formby was quite the sex pest in his day, and a lot of his songs were full of double entendres.

Love it 😂You must be around my age, but this version never made it to my primary school, sadly!

I never knew that! OK, now it makes sense that he was wondering how to be an optimist about it... 😄

(Makes sense of the whole lyric, actually.)

Magnalux · 29/10/2025 12:22

I’m sure these have been mentioned but the lyrics in the chorus of Sabrina carpenters tears are “I get wet at the thought of you …. Tears run down my thighs”. I know it’s not a hidden meaning as it’s right there but it’s hard to hear properly and I think a lot of people are unaware of how explicit it is!!

Also the weekends “take my breath” is about being choked during sex!

I am very old, and in my early teens I loved the music of Tamla Motown (still do). One day after school I was sitting on our stairs singing 'Hickory Hollow's Tramp' and my mother came out of the kitchen and said, 'do you know what you are singing about'? I said no, I was just singing. She said 'well, don't sing it again'. It was only when I grew up that I realised what the song was about:

"Oh the path was deep and wide from footsteps leading to our cabin,
Above the door there hung a scarlet lamp,
And late at night a hand would knock, and there would stand a stranger,
Yes, I'm the son of Hickory Hollow's tramp'.

It's a fab song and a very compassionate tale of how prostitution was his deserted mother's only choice.

My late DF loved this song, for the same reason.

Moonlightfrog · 29/10/2025 12:24

Apparently ‘Macarena’ is about a woman who’s boyfriend is deployed in the army and she has a 3 some with his 2 best mates.

Yeh so many people have Every Breath You Take as "their" song which is bizarre as it's a nasty song about a stalker, surely?

Indeed. There are also all those people that named their daughters Roxanne. You'd think if you loved the song enough to use it as a name you'd've picked up on the suicidal prostitute vibe!

You Are my Sunshine. I remember it being all over mugs and baby grows a while ago and it's about pining for a lost love who has gone off with someone else.

The other night, dear
As I lay sleeping
I dreamed I held you
In my arms
When I awoke, dear
I was mistaken
So I hung my head and cried

Listen to the version by The Dead South. Sounds much darker in a minor key.

Yes I'm aware of that

ruethewhirl · 29/10/2025 12:32

One for my age group... 'Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep'.

I used to like it when I was little because the melody was so... well, chirpy. It's about child abandonment. 😧

AgnesMcDoo · 29/10/2025 12:39

Chain Reaction is about orgasms.

Whilst it is explicit in the lyrics - I didn't realise this when I used to belt it out at primary school discos.

You make me tremble when your hand moves lower
You taste a little then you swallow slower
Nature has a way of yielding treasure
Pleasure made for you, oh

I want to get your love all ready
For the sweet sensation, instant radiation (oh-oh)
You let me hold you for the first explosion (first explosion)
