To judge acrylics on a child?

VanyaV · 27/10/2025 12:14

We bumped into a classmate of my 9 year old yesterday, and she had acrylic extensions, apparently because she’s a bridesmaid this week (it’s half term).

My own 9 year old now wants to try them too. Regardless of the nail damage and impracticality, I think it looks incredibly cheap and tacky!

AIBU to think this way and how can I explain it to DD?

Just say no. Why do you have to explain it

CharlieKirkRIP · 27/10/2025 12:15

Just say no. Far too young to have them. Instead buy some sparkly nail polish.

arethereanyleftatall · 27/10/2025 12:16

So just explain it using the first reason!? They’ll damage your nails and are impractical.

StrongandNorthern · 27/10/2025 12:18

Are you always this judgemental?

VanyaV · 27/10/2025 12:18

Obviously I am explaining that and she won’t be getting them!

MangoLlama · 27/10/2025 12:18

Acrylics for a special event during school holidays won’t do the 9 year old any lasting harm. YABU for being judgemental of other people’s (ultimately inconsequential) parenting choices.

It’s also perfectly fine for you to not want that for your own child.

AliceTheCamelHasTheHumpSoGoAliceGoBomBomBom · 27/10/2025 12:18

Why would you need to explain different parenting to a 9yo?

Surely you make different choices to her friends parents all the time?

Chinupchindownchinroundandround · 27/10/2025 12:18

Just tell her no and explain you don't like it 😅

Surely this isn't the first time she's come across a family that has different rules to your household?

Motnight · 27/10/2025 12:18

I am really surprised that a nail technician would put acrylics onto a child. I've seen parents and grandparents asking for this for young children and been refused. Just tell DD that different families have different rules and that you aren't going to allow her to do anything that will harm her nails. Plus extremely doubtful that school will allow this

I wouldn't bother with the cheap and tacky route - what looks awful to us could look beautiful to your DD 😂

DiscoBob · 27/10/2025 12:19

Just say she's too young and they don't work properly on small fingers. That her friend will probably find them annoying. Or it's too expensive. Or just say no. Maybe another time. And that time never comes.

Bambamhoohoo · 27/10/2025 12:19

You judge a child? And you’re not ashamed to tell other people that?! Seriously?!

my 10 year old has fake Halloween nails on this week. I love giving her the opportunity to get creative

I've basically just said the same thing. I think OP is more looking to slate the parents of the other child tbh 😅

I’m judging her parents, not the child!

Why? They don’t care what you think and your judgement doesn’t impact anything. What a waste of emotional energy!

Get your daughter some press-on nails with the double sided sticky tabs rather than super glue style ones. Great for half term and no damage

You're right, op is looking for lots of "gosh those parents are vile for letting their child have cheap, tacky nail extensions for a special event, you're such a fantastic parent for not giving into the peer pressure" posts.

Absolutely 😅

It's a little funny it's made the OP so annoyed

I thought exactly the same. The answer is so blindingly obvious that the intentions of this post is simply to slag off people who wear them.

I’m with you OP. Tacky. Let kids be kids.

Not my style, but I couldn’t care less about adults choosing them.

I did feel sad for this kid at the park, sat on the floor instead of running around using the equipment, because she didn’t want to damage her nails though.

Your lying or you'd of said that in your original post and used that to strengthen why you dont like them 😅

This thread backfired on you, don't try back tracking now 😅

ProfessorRizz · 27/10/2025 12:30

I teach music (secondary) and a small proportion of Year 7s and 8s have acrylics. They complain that they can’t play the piano with them; I’m fairly surprised that they can write/do sport/use a knife and fork with them! Their choice, I guess.

I’m scared of long nails, I hate the feel of them but appreciate that my hands look scruffy without a manicure 🤷‍♀️

The poor kid probably couldn't even cry about not playing in case she got her nasty, cheap fake eyelashes wet and destroyed them too 😭
