To judge acrylics on a child?

We bumped into a classmate of my 9 year old yesterday, and she had acrylic extensions, apparently because she’s a bridesmaid this week (it’s half term).

My own 9 year old now wants to try them too. Regardless of the nail damage and impracticality, I think it looks incredibly cheap and tacky!

AIBU to think this way and how can I explain it to DD?

It’s for a wedding. I’d not judge that - it’s probably to make her feel included with the bridesmaids and a little more grown up.

NeverHadHaveHas · 27/10/2025 12:34

Are you sure they are actually acrylic extensions? Loads of kids in my DD’s (10) buy those stick on nails for £2 from primark and tell each other they have acrylics. I don’t have any issue with those as they don’t damage the nails and tend to pop off in a day or so anyway.

I teach music (secondary) and a small proportion of Year 7s and 8s have acrylics. They complain that they can’t play the piano with them; I’m fairly surprised that they can write/do sport/use a knife and fork with them! Their choice, I guess.

I’m scared of long nails, I hate the feel of them but appreciate that my hands look scruffy without a manicure 🤷‍♀️

Personally I think short, natural nails look much nicer and not scruffy at all.

I work with some people who have regular gel nails (and I have had them for special occasions before) and when they start growing out they look really unhygienic. I think you have to go every 3 weeks or so to keep them looking nice.

The entirely simple answer is to tell your DD that she can’t have them as she’s not being a bridesmaid this week (I assume). The end.

I got absolutely flamed when I posted about the exact same thing OP!

She had them done in the local salon, the wedding’s not til later in the week, and she was talking about how they’d last until they’re back at school so I believe they are genuine.

Just awful

Why? They don’t care what you think and your judgement doesn’t impact anything. What a waste of emotional energy!

MN would cease to exist if no-one judged anyone else.

Especially AIBU!

I'd be very surprised if you've never wasted your emotional energy on judging something or someone.

Nearly 80% agree with me so far, but there’s some very vocal dissenters 😂

All these “you’re so judgmental” posts! It’s important to judge - to be aware of and to act and show your child what is right and wrong in your world view. You can explain that other parents may have a different judgmental view.

theressomanytinafeysicouldbe · 27/10/2025 12:51

Get her some of the press on nails, you can pick them up in home bargains and B&M, most supermarkets or claires, etc

I used to get acrylics and if you knock them it really hurts, also I would say that a child that age shouldn't be getting them because it could damage the nail bed

I just visualise them all as looking like Katie Price 😁

I have acrylics all the time and don't think they look tacky at all!

I've seen 7 year olds with these recently. Mum of 4 girls here and mine keep asking for this. I'm not starting it. Mostly because it's just something else to pay for!

Bambamhoohoo · 27/10/2025 12:19

You judge a child? And you’re not ashamed to tell other people that?! Seriously?!

my 10 year old has fake Halloween nails on this week. I love giving her the opportunity to get creative

Obviously she judges the parents of the child, not the child, and I don't blame her.

BengalBangle · 27/10/2025 12:59

I think they look tacky on adults and children, but no need to make a song and dance of it: just say no. 🤷🏼‍♀️

CatamaranViper · 27/10/2025 12:59

Are you absolutely sure they aren't stuck on and the child just thought they were acrylics?

Terriblytwee · 27/10/2025 13:00

With you OP. Really tacky

YabbaDabbaDooooo · 27/10/2025 13:00

@FlowersFawb is that a joke?

Sorry, I'm not sure if you're being tongue in cheek?

I would judge you as well. Kids don't need fake nails on
