Do I need to go to a&e?

I was out walking my dog earlier today and fell over. I slipped going downhill on some soggy leaves. I smacked my left hip/buttock area quite heavily and also hit my knee on a rock. It now hurts in both hips to take a deep breath, it hurts to walk, I can’t sit comfortably and my knee is in quite constant pain. I’ve taken paracetamol and ibuprofen and they’ve not touched the sides of it. I’m quite worried I’ve done something significant

Nope I’m in my 20s but it’s seriously sore. I’d leave it if it wasn’t for the fact breathing is painful

Yes. Go to A&E. Be prepared for a long night. Take pain meds with you. And fluids. Can someone go with you?

mmsnet · 26/10/2025 23:57

OP asks whether she should go to A&E, majority say she should

what does OP do? shes going to sleep

another attention seeking idiot

spoonbillstretford · 27/10/2025 01:52

If it's not a life threatening emergency or somethiing that will get worse over night then she can certainly take painkillers and go in the morning. I have a drop in centre where you can get an xray 9-5 and I'd go for that over A&E any time for something like this.

ChessorBuckaroo · 27/10/2025 02:29

Couple of trolls on here (the post one before last the second of them).

See how you are in the morning OP. If it gets worse then contact 111 and see what they think.

I fell off my bike during the summer which resulted in bruised ribs. Worst area to get any type of bruising as you cannot rest it with the constant inhaling/exhaling. Getting up was awful too. Was in pain for over a week.

SweetnsourNZ · 27/10/2025 04:01

Get yourself checked. Sounds like you could have a trapped nerve especially as it isn't being helped by painkillers. I had this when I slipped in the kitchen. It leads to stenosis which is very unpleasant.

Relaxd · 27/10/2025 04:20

Only you know how severe your pain and symptoms are. Broken bones need treating but often can wait until morning - half the time they send you home until the fracture clinic opens for actual treatment. Of course there will be the exceptions that need urgent review so if you aren’t sure then call 111. I fell over this year and went 2 days later when it started to hurt more, turned out I’d broken a bone in my back. So you can feel ok and still have done something serious.

BallerinaRadio · 27/10/2025 04:51

Ihad2Strokes · 26/10/2025 22:40

WRONG.

& stop posting shit that puts people off seeking medical help that they need.

I think it's more a case of people should be seeking medical attention in the right places. There's no way of checking anyone's qualifications on here, anyone in need of medical advice should be calling 111 not posting on Mumsnet.

BallerinaRadio · 27/10/2025 04:52

ruethewhirl · 26/10/2025 22:49

That's nonsense, and potentially dangerous nonsense at that. If you saw the thread on here recently from someone who was posting while clearly very unwell, and who turned out to have sepsis, it would have put the kibosh on your theory.

Yeah thank God for Mumsnet 111 would never have picked that up 🙄

writingsonthewall · 27/10/2025 04:55

I wouldn’t. I’d give it a day or two and see if it feels better.

JollyMintWasp · 27/10/2025 05:03

If you can't walk properly or the pain is constant even with meds, I'd get seen. Could be a deep bruise or even a fracture somewhere. Better to have it looked at.

OuchThisReallyHurts · 27/10/2025 06:52

I’ve survived the night, and actually slept through. I’m still sore and taking a deep breath twinges but not as badly. I’ll pop to minor injuries this morning to make sure everything is okay though, because it is a little concerning

Edinburghdaze · 27/10/2025 06:59

Was just wondering how you were doing. Definitely sounds like you need to get checked over.

Iamnotalemming · 27/10/2025 07:01

Sounds like a fracture. Good luck today and get well soon Flowers

Friendlyfart · 27/10/2025 07:02

If it were me I’d go to minor injuries in the morning as waiting at A&E overnight is horrific esp if you’re in pain.

Hobbitfeet32 · 27/10/2025 07:03

Have you had paracetamol? And did it help?

KTSl1964 · 27/10/2025 07:11

Do minor injuries have xrays?

OuchThisReallyHurts · 27/10/2025 07:26

Do minor injuries have xrays?

My local one does. I think it’s technically now named urgent care but it’s all the same thing really isn’t it 😂

I have, it did for about twenty minutes but then it wore off

QueenOfWeeds · 27/10/2025 07:36

I’d go sooner rather than later, OP. I fractured my elbow at about 10:30 on a Monday morning and, whilst chatting to the nurse in A&E, commented on how busy it was…
”oh, Monday mornings are always busy because people wait until they should be at work and come in with problems they’ve stored up from the weekend”.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 27/10/2025 08:10

Can you just ‘pop in’ @OuchThisReallyHurts ?

Our minor injuries unit won’t see anyone unless an appointment has been booked by 111 (which is why I suggested that you should call 111 shortly after your initial post yesterday afternoon).

Anyway, best of luck. Let us know how you get on.

Over lockdown I had to call 111 eleven times because it was the only way to get help, and their on call nurse laughed at me over the phone and said I was obviously fine. Blue lighted in later that night with sepsis. Same happened with my uncle at A&E, nearly died, got advice from family to go back and demand to be seen...eye rolls back at you

Similar experience,in fact I'm still waiting for a call back from them during lockdown...

I never ring them now,I find them utterly useless.

Our urgent care doesn’t require appointments, I’m here now

My 2 nearest hospitals have A&E. Once inside you are triaged and then split into different tracks, minor injuries / urgent care / emergency.

I always find it odd when people on here say don’t go to A&E go to minor injuries. They are the exact same place for me with the same door and reception area.

Muchtoomuchtodo · 27/10/2025 08:23

@JamesWebbSpaceTelescope you find it odd that different health boards in different parts of the uk have different arrangements? Really?!

Our closest more injuries unit is a 10 minute drive away - open Monday - Friday 8-4 and needs 111 to book you an appt. Our closest A&E is 30 minutes drive away and you can obviously just turn up, though they do like you to have spoken to 111 first!!
