To Think My Puffer Coat Is Making Me Depressed

I hate puffer** coats. I hate them so much. The shape, the texture, the dull colours. It might be shallow, but I find nice clothes an easy way to boost my mood. I like colour, surprising combinations, interesting shapes... However, various lifestyle changes mean I'm outside much more than I used to be, so a couple of years ago I caved and bought one from Uniqlo. It works. It keeps me both dry and warm. As all the marketing promises, I do indeed feel like I am wearing my duvet - which I admit can be quite nice.

But now the weather has turned, the thought of putting it on is making me so sad! I can't rot away in this slug-like thing from now until March.

Has anyone found a decent knee length one with a hood in a colour other than black, grey, khaki, navy, sludge brown or beige? I would love electric blue or bright green, or - god forbid - even a pattern. Does such a thing exist? I'm wiling to pay for it. Cheaper than therapy.

** I hate it even more when people spell it "puffa coat"

Has anyone mentioned Farm Rio? They have highly patterned puffers including some maxi length ones. I’ve never worn a puffer coat for all the reasons given (my North Face parka does the job), but this could persuade me.

Ooh - good call. Thank you. I don’t like that specific pattern, but will keep an eye on Farm Rio - hadn’t thought of them for puffers…

I hope this is a joke because that looks like she’s wearing a plastic leather sofa with a belt 🤣

I quite like it to be fair but each to their own! Beats boring black.

I haven't got one, yet, I'm very tempted. A friend of mine has 4! She swears by them. We live near the coast and she wears them for all-weather coastal walks, as well as for winter break duties at school.

Do you know how warm they are?
theyd be perfect for me but I need them to be nicely toasty

cestlavielife · 27/10/2025 15:05

I have ,RED one super warm .

minishiteboard · 27/10/2025 15:20

But puffa is correct.
they are fucking awful coats, though

Holluschickie · 27/10/2025 15:26

Are people really wearing changing robes as coats? I think they are worse than puffas.

Paaseitjes · 27/10/2025 15:26

You need to look at real outdoor brands for bright colours. They often only have jacket length BUT many brands do this amazing thing called a down skirt! It means you get a short and long coat in one, it's easier to walk and sit, and it's easier to get something to fit if you're different sizes top and bottom. It also means you get a waist and look less like a slug!

PeonyPatch · 27/10/2025 15:34

id recommend Patagonia / Rab

AnnPerkins · 27/10/2025 15:46

I have the tarragon one in the shorter version and I absolutely love it. It's incredibly lightweight but really warm. I can wear just a tshirt under it in subzero temps. I actually love it so much that I bought a second identical one in the sale.

The longer version does give off caterpillar vibes from the back though. Does it have to be knee length?

Rina1971 · 27/10/2025 17:05

Not a puffer coat but I wear sea salt winter coats. My latest is turquoise and picked up for £50 from a local market

Dinosaurhearmeroar · 27/10/2025 18:05

Oh get a red one! That will make you feel better even if marginally. Google red puffer coats and maybe put designer after as they often do amazing ones but expensive!!!

Muffintopflop · 27/10/2025 18:15

This coat has already been mentioned I believe but saw this Hobbs coat in the shop the other day and the colour is fab - the photo on the website doesn't really do it justice as it really pops out at you when seen IRL. https://www.next.co.uk/style/su522705/v24158

I hate mine too - but it keeps me warm. I also have a dry robe which is great for wet dog walks but I feel like a right tool wearing it in public.

I have been eyeing up these which are a lot of fun!
