To Think My Puffer Coat Is Making Me Depressed

I hate puffer** coats. I hate them so much. The shape, the texture, the dull colours. It might be shallow, but I find nice clothes an easy way to boost my mood. I like colour, surprising combinations, interesting shapes... However, various lifestyle changes mean I'm outside much more than I used to be, so a couple of years ago I caved and bought one from Uniqlo. It works. It keeps me both dry and warm. As all the marketing promises, I do indeed feel like I am wearing my duvet - which I admit can be quite nice.

But now the weather has turned, the thought of putting it on is making me so sad! I can't rot away in this slug-like thing from now until March.

Has anyone found a decent knee length one with a hood in a colour other than black, grey, khaki, navy, sludge brown or beige? I would love electric blue or bright green, or - god forbid - even a pattern. Does such a thing exist? I'm wiling to pay for it. Cheaper than therapy.

** I hate it even more when people spell it "puffa coat"

@ProcrastinatorsAnonymous I totally get where you're coming from OP. I've got my eye on this beauty from Hobbs (currently 25% off!): https://www.hobbs.com/product/jaymie-puffer/0225-3705-9322L00-VIBRANT-PURPLE.html#cgid=clothing-coats-and-jackets&is=true&sz=60&start=0&isSecondPage=false&pid=0225-3705-9322L00-VIBRANT-PURPLE&pos=14 I just LOVE the colour! 😍

I don’t personally like the purple but the dark green is a great colour. The diagonal seams are flatting and stylish.

Thank you. That will solve my coat problem. But now to find a waterproof long coat for DH. The time is up for his aged "not quite a barbour".

ProcrastinatorsAnonymous · 26/10/2025 23:18

Thanks! Someone posted this further up the thread and - if you take the belt off it - I think it might be my favourite of the non-patterned ones. The different texture and black detailing help a lot. Still a slug though, innit?

You’re all crazy. I love puffas. Here’s mine.

I almost spat out my wine, brilliant.

IMTHECRAZYOLDLADY · 27/10/2025 00:33

I wear a Uniqlo puffa for dog walking. I also have two wool coats that I like, one in a bright check and one a more somber classic black. I'm thinking of selling the black one and buying a shorter tweed coat.
It's soul destroying wearing a coat you hate in the winter.

Can i ask - what do you all do about washing them ?!? I've tried and the stuffing all just balls up.

I too hate puffer coats. I wear one when we get actual snow. My adult daughter has one which she tried washing last year with a tennis ball in the machine but it didn't work.

I haven't read the whole thread, so this has probably been answered now. But in case it hasn't, put it in a cool tumble dryer with a tennis ball, and it will return to being as fluffy as when it was new.

This is my new wool coats, expensive but I love it

Love it. A portal to my old life. Which I miss. Wish it would work for school run on bike, but I'd be drenched.

Oh my goodness - I have never heard of these! Have you worn one? Are they good? Thank you!

I haven't got one, yet, I'm very tempted. A friend of mine has 4! She swears by them. We live near the coast and she wears them for all-weather coastal walks, as well as for winter break duties at school.

Because my day is bookended by a school run on a cargo bike though howling wind, freezing rain and (when I'm really lucky) hail. Wool would be a heavy, soggy mess by the end of that, and umbrellas etc not an option.

I was once glamorous like you. I rotated through a range of wool coats. I used umbrellas. But a series of poor life choices has since led to me needing a puffer.

What about a short version that just comes to the waist? Much more flattering. Or just a raincoat with lots of layers underneath?

Your OP made me laugh, thank you!
makes total sense to me as I’m not a fan of the puffer coat. I buy coats on Vinted these days which are cheap enough to try a few styles to get the right one for me. And then I sell the others!

Needcoffeeimmediatley · 27/10/2025 07:57

What about something like this? There are other colours and patterns

It looks better with the belt.

I’ve never owned one, awful looking things. Why can’t you just wear a woolly type coat or something similar? That’s what I do, and just use an umbrella if it rains. I say this as someone who goes hiking, has dogs and a baby. I don’t even have a raincoat.

Oooh you’re hard.

Sahara123 · 27/10/2025 09:06

Oh I agree, hate them ! Also because I’m short with a large bust I feel humongous in one !
I used to work as a school assistant and did playground duty. They offered to buy us warm coats which was very kind but the other two staff wanted puffer coats . I left ( not because of that but I was mighty relieved I didn’t have to wear one !)

Helphjjjjb · 27/10/2025 09:12

Look for one with a belt. They are less awful with some shape. If it does have belt loops swap out the boring belt for a long thin scarf to add colour.

I live in a colder country and as dreadful as they look it is difficult to go back to being cold and wet in a wool coat.

In the UK, why not go for two coats in the winter. A structured wool coat for nice days and a puffer for getting blasted with horizontal coldness.

Sartre · 27/10/2025 09:25

I understand because I can’t and won’t wear one. This means I usually have an impractical coat on but it keeps me warm enough and looks mega smart so I feel good. I wear oversized wool coats or a trench if it’s warmer. Never have a hood so need an umbrella.

VenusClapTrap · 27/10/2025 09:28

Has anyone mentioned Farm Rio? They have highly patterned puffers including some maxi length ones. I’ve never worn a puffer coat for all the reasons given (my North Face parka does the job), but this could persuade me.

CharSiu · 27/10/2025 09:37

I have a black puffa style coat and agree they are miserable, but they are so practical. I have just bought a white wool coat that is the most impractical thing in the world and will wear it very occasionally and carefully, DH calls it my Melania Trump coat.

Disagree - hate a cinched waist on a puffer. Looks like a slug got trapped in some chicken wire.
