Money on floor - WWYD?

You’re minding your own business completing the food shop in store when you notice £10 on the floor in an aisle? No other customers or staff in the aisle

what would you do? Would you be unreasonable in picking it up and pocketing it for yourself?

A fiver I’d probably keep, a twenty I’d hand in, mostly based on whether I would expect someone to notice the loss and check with staff. A tenner… don’t know, it’s a bit inbetweeny

lnks · 25/10/2025 21:16

Of course it would be unreasonable to pocket it.

ShesTheAlbatross · 25/10/2025 21:17

In a shop I’d hand it in. In the street, I’d keep it.

Ollybob · 25/10/2025 21:17

I'd pick it up but would probably hover for a bit and see if someone comes back looking for it.
I've picked up notes from the floor before and pocketed them if noone around however have returned wallets with cash in to their owners.

cariadlet · 25/10/2025 21:18

I'd take it to customer services in case it had been dropped by someone who was broke and was looking for the money that they had dropped.

TomatoSandwiches · 25/10/2025 21:19

Take it to customer services tbh, what if that was their last bit of money for their shop.

MayWelland · 25/10/2025 21:21

Agreed. It’s not yours

FuzzyWolf · 25/10/2025 21:23

Just say to Customer Service that it was dropped and the pop on the local social media pages that if anyone lost anything that you handed it in.

Itiswhysofew · 25/10/2025 21:30

I wouldn't keep it. I'd be thinking about it belonging to someone who's short on funds. I'd pick it up and hand it to staff.

Seawolves · 25/10/2025 21:31

I'd hand it in. I was once the person who lost a tenner, it was the last £10 I had, my then DH was facing bankruptcy and we were truly down to our last few quid. Some kind soul handed that £10 in to customer services and I will never forget that sense of relief and gratitude.

whimsicallyprickly · 25/10/2025 21:32

Its not mine. Also, there are cameras everywhere 😆

Bushmillsbabe · 25/10/2025 21:53

In a shop would hand it in. In a high street I look for a charity shop and hand it in there as a donation.

Someonelookedatmypostinghistorysoichanged · 25/10/2025 22:01

Hand it in, there are cameras so the owner can be verified
I dropped £60 once in Sainsbury’s - it was all I had for electric and food for me and my 3 dc for a week. I cried when I they told me it had been handed in.

Lyra87 · 25/10/2025 22:04

I would hand it in to customer service as it would just feel like bad karma to keep it. Wouldn't necessarily judge someone else for pocketing a fiver, but any amount higher I would.

elm26 · 25/10/2025 22:05

Hand it in, you never known if that’s the difference between a couple of days worth of food or none.

CocoRats · 25/10/2025 22:08

Hand it in. Of course it would be unreasonable to keep it.

MoltenLasagne · 25/10/2025 22:08

I used to live by a postbox so found dropped cash pretty regularly and once found a dropped phone. I used to put a post it on the postbox to see if anyone claimed the cash and if not it went to charity. Luckily managed to track the owner of the phone too.

I can't imagine keeping it, somehow even without it being stealing, it feels dishonest to profit from someone's misfortune, as though there'd be some negative karma attached.

OnTheBoardwalk · 25/10/2025 22:10

I’d absolutely hand it in at a shop, there’s a big chance it will get back to the person who lost it and could make a big difference to someone

i remember seeing £10 in the street many years ago, no one around apart from me and my ex. I went to pick it up, he stamped on my hand to stop me and broke my little finger - knob head. In the street with no one around I’d give it to charity

Ocado man found £20 I’d lost at the back of my car but outside my garden. He picked it up and told me. After a lot of arguing he took the £10 tip I gave him

What if it’s a difference between a couple of days of food or none for the person who find it?

CharlieWeasleysWife · 25/10/2025 22:13

I found a pound coin in the gym the other day. Didn't hand it in as felt too ridiculous but I did pick it up and put it in a noticeable place in case the owner came back for it. Just doesn't feel right to me, to keep someone else's money.

Talkingfrog · 25/10/2025 22:15

Years ago my mum saw a £10 on the entrance to a greggs. Gave it over to staff. They recorded it and her details. They said how many days there was for it to be claimed. I can't remember what happened when dhe went back- I think they gave it to her because it hadn't been claimed, or gave the option to donate to charity.

I have found a £5 in the street. A main shopping street. Picked it up and waited nearby fir a few minutes. No one returned to lookfor it, so bought things for the food bank with it, when I went to the supermarket.

In a shop I would hand it in.

In the street - harder to say- depends on how much, and what shops were nearby.

If not handed in, I would feel guilty keeping it, so would give it to a charity.

I can understand why others, especially those who were struggling would keep it - especially if it would help feed the family, pay for heating etc.

battairzeedurgzome · 25/10/2025 22:21

Of course it would be unreasonable to keep the money. It's not yours! If you can't be bothered to hand it in, leave it where it is.

MsSweeney · 25/10/2025 22:23

I was in this exact scenario a couple of years ago. I found £10 in an empty aisle in Aldi and handed it in. It didn't cross my mind to do anything else.

Miceloveme · 25/10/2025 22:31

I once found £100 in a envelope at the bus stop. I picked it up and took it too the police station. A few months later the police called me to collect it has nobody had claimed it.

MargaretThursday · 25/10/2025 22:38

I think someone was prosecuted for keeping £10 they found in the floor on a shop not that long ago. The argument if I remember rightly was that the owner could easily be identified on CCTV and they made not attempt to find them.

I have found money in notes, the biggest was a roll of 5x £20s. I handed them in every the even though at that point it could have made a nice difference to us.
