Money on floor - WWYD?

You’re minding your own business completing the food shop in store when you notice £10 on the floor in an aisle? No other customers or staff in the aisle

what would you do? Would you be unreasonable in picking it up and pocketing it for yourself?

Years ago when my kids were small and money tight I found 3 £20 notes folded up together behind checkouts. I picked it up and told cashier who said to take it to customer services. I did that and they took my name and address. About 2 weeks later I got thank you card in post with £30 in from person who had lost it. £30 was a lot in those days.

Nannyfannybanny · 26/10/2025 09:04

Hand it in. Back in the days when you got wages in cash,my ex H dropped his full wage packet,in Waitrose of all places. Never handed in!

EmpressaurusKitty · 26/10/2025 09:10

I found a £10 on the floor in my gym changing room the other day. I asked if anyone in there had dropped some cash, nobody had so I gave it to one of the staff. Hopefully it got back to the owner.

If I’d found it lying on the street I’d have given it to charity.

DiscoBob · 26/10/2025 09:13

Of course I would take it. If you drop cash you're not getting it back. Unless someone saw you dropping it, then the right thing to do would be to tell you and hand it back.

I've lost and found cash before. I think I've lost more than I've picked up.

PlaceIntheClouds · 26/10/2025 09:19

I remember being about 9 years old and finding a five pound note on the floor in Woolworths. It felt like winning the lottery. I was shopping with my Gran and kept schtum.

Kerensa70 · 26/10/2025 18:04

This happened to me and I did hand it in. It’s on the shop property so really belongs to them. I’d be terrified if a camera seeing me. I did feel smug after and surprised myself in a way!

Mackerelfillets · 26/10/2025 18:07

Several years ago I found a twenty pound note and gave it to charity.

Middleagedspreadisreal · 26/10/2025 18:10

I'd hand it in, it could be the only money the owner had to pay for their shopping - and it would be stealing to keep it

LHP118 · 26/10/2025 18:16

In store definitely take to counter. Outdoors, any note £5 and above keep an eye out for someone looking and local posts. I've returned £5 and £20 to people who couldn't afford to lose those amounts. I litterpick, so find diverse things.

autienotnaughty · 26/10/2025 18:24

Years ago when I was poor I’d have kept it. Now I’d hand it in. I just think that might be someone last £20 for the month.

Leaveittogod · 26/10/2025 18:26

I found £40 recently and I handed it in. The shop staff looked at me like I was crazy and told me to keep it. I told them I didn’t need it but some one else might if they can’t find the owner and to hand it in

i would 100% hand it in, i dropped a purse with about £300 cash a week before christmas on a very busy street a few years ago and two teenage boys ran after me to make sure i got it back, i was so grateful for their honestly and i would always do the same

MMUmum · 26/10/2025 18:30

I found a big wad of notes at a supermarket checkout, I handed it in to the checkout staff, it was Christmas, it upset me that it could have been someone's Christmas shopping money, I hope they claimed it

JadeSeahorse · 26/10/2025 18:32

A few years ago I spotted £10 on the floor at Morrisons.

Took it to Customer Services but they never took my details or anything so cynical me did wonder if the staff member or the store would just pocket it themselves if no-one enquired about it that day.🤨

I certainly wouldn't risk keeping it these days as there are cameras everywhere but more so because I am far too honest and would worry myself stupid if I didn't hand it in. 🙄

Distinctlydull · 26/10/2025 18:36

I found £10 on the floor in our local Co-op a couple of months ago, it didn't cross my mind to keep it and I handed it in at the till.

Flowertoek · 26/10/2025 18:49

I've seen money on the floor before, in shops and on the street, and just ignore it. I don't need it and I figure I'll leave it there for either the person to come back to find or someone else who might need it more. I don't really want the hassle of handing it in and probably having to queue to speak to someone for a matter that doesn't make a difference to me.

abracadabra1980 · 26/10/2025 18:53

I’d probably hand it in - but I wouldn’t think you were a granny abuser if you decided to pocket it 🙂

shiverm · 26/10/2025 19:00

When I was a kid I found a 20 in Woolworths and waited in a queue to hand it in. When I’d done that a woman behind me told me I should just have kept it as the shop worker would keep it. I have found a lot of money in my life. I found £20 a few months ago in a car park and it broke my heart to think it could have been someone poor pensioner’s last 20. But like… who’s going to go to CS thinking money was handed in. And no one is going to pay their staff to check cctv and track down the person who dropped it. Sometimes best just to give it to charity.

Why would they take your details? To update you on the fate of the tenner?

grrrlatrix · 26/10/2025 19:02

I never keep found money. It’s not mine and you don’t take what isn’t yours.
if I can’t reasonably expect to find who it belongs to then I give it to charity.

OnlyOnAFriday · 26/10/2025 19:04

£10 in the street I’d keep it

£10 in the supermarket I’d hand it in.

larger amount of money in the street I’d hand in. 30 years ago when I was 16yo I found £80 in the street and took it to the police station. Turned out it was someone’s pension and he was beside himself in a panic when he came in on the off chance it had been handed in.

Ronnybabes · 26/10/2025 19:08

Hand it in and ask the Manager to send a message over the intercom system.
"Would the owner of a lost £10 note found in the food aisle please form a queue at the Reception Counter". 😂

Davros · 26/10/2025 19:10

There used to be a fiver pasted to the floor of the Coalherne in Earls Court in the 1970s, notorious gay pub. I’ll let you work out why

CryMyEyesViolet · 25/10/2025 22:11

What if it’s a difference between a couple of days of food or none for the person who find it?

The difference is, it’s not the finders money

Munichfam5 · 26/10/2025 19:11

Hand it in - my DD found £10 in our local lidl and handed it in t the store - the next day there was an incredibly grateful post on our local Facebook page saying thanks to my DD from the person that had lost it
