So apparently I’m obese according to the NHS website. I definitely have a belly but I don’t feel obese! What do you think? I’m worried I’m deluded!

No you don't look obese at all. Don't worry too much about what your BMI says, it's yet another outdated misogynistic system that was based solely on 1 Caucasian man in the 1960s, apparently. I think it's a complete joke that the NHS use it in this day and age.

I’m 5ft 3 and 11 stone 4 pounds. I know I’m a bit heavy, but fuck me, obese seems harsh! But I don’t know if I’m deluded

Wow you look taller than your height. You don't look obese1

No5ChalksRoad · 24/10/2025 01:50

You don’t look huge, but one of the tragedies of our time is the normalization of excess weight and obesity. One need not be extremely large to be obese from a medical standpoint, with the corresponding risks for diabetes, cardiovascular disease, etc.

Starconundrum · 24/10/2025 01:55

I look fatter than you on my torso and my BMI is 24 .

The only difference is my legs are skinnier and longer.

It's a silly system.

WhichBigToe · 23/10/2025 21:51

I just put your figures into NHS BMI calculator. It said 28 which is overweight but not obese. I think your figure looks totally normal. A little bit of weight to lose to get to the healthy range but totally doable.

Exactly. Think op may have miscalculated

It's not a subjective term

Just because everyone around you is morbidly obese doesnt make you less obese, just as being in a gym doesn't make you any more or less fit.

The important thing is what you do with that information now. Continue with your current lifestyle or make some changes. It's up to you, but do it from a position of honesty not denial.

Personally I don't feel middle aged.

I haven't been for years now.

You can, if it bothers you.

Naanspiration · 24/10/2025 02:10

You look overweight. Try eating less.

Hfgvi · 24/10/2025 02:22

I’ve ticked that YABU, partly because you have calculated wrong and are classed as overweight not obese with those measurements and partly because it’s a rubbish photo to see what you look like.
You’re a similar height and weight to me and I am aiming to lose another 1.5 stones so I’m in healthy bmi range although I’m pretty happy with how I look now.

Muffinmam · 24/10/2025 02:25

You’re not obese at all.

The math that was used to calculate a person’s BMI was based on a white male. It doesn’t take into account biological gender, race or age.

Don’t worry about it.

Also, how many dogs do you have?

Muffinmam · 24/10/2025 02:35

Also, I was told my child was overweight and portion control was suggested by a nurse.

He’s not fat. He’s an active little boy that can run fast and has good muscle tone. I can see his ribs and he loses weight when he’s sick and fattens up right before a growth spurt. He does not over-eat.

My cousin was formally spoken to by a hospital dietician about the weight of all of her children. She was told they were severely underweight. These kids were skinny with the muscle tone of athletes. There are pro-athletes on her side of the family. These kids spent a lot of time outside playing and were very active.

BMI’s don’t take into account genetics. The kids looked skinny but she was feeding them a lot and they were burning it off.

She ended up yelling and walking out of the hospital.

Roosnoodles · 24/10/2025 02:36

You don’t look obese and the bmi has been proven to not be the correct way of telling if your overweight now. The easiest way is measure your waist it’s supposed to be less than half your height.

buffyreboot · 24/10/2025 02:53

Naanspiration · 24/10/2025 02:10

Bet nobody overweight ever thought of that

SassyCow · 24/10/2025 04:58

You don't look obese at all. I think the whole BMI is outdated.

OP, does your waist measure no more than 31.5 inches? It should be no more than half your height.

As a PP has said, according to the NHS calculator, you are overweight, not obese.

But the waist measurement is the one you need to pay particular attention for the sake of your health.

FourCatMama · 24/10/2025 05:21

NOT AT ALL!!!!

PfizerFan · 24/10/2025 05:32

5ft 3 11st4 isnt obese assuming youre white, which it looks like you are from the pic? Bmi 28.

Obese is 30 plus.

spoonbillstretford · 24/10/2025 05:39

You look BMI 28. Slightly overweight, and apple shaped, so you need to get it off your middle.

Apricotafternoon · 24/10/2025 05:51

You look fine but you should know BMI is outdated and misleading forget about the number and lead a healthy lifestyle x

@letmehaveathink I calculated and it says overweight not obese. Mine also just came out overweight. That was shocking to see as i have always hovered around 18 to 20 for bmi. Am very short and in the last year have gained weight. Am 55.5kg (8 stones 9 lbs) and 152cm (4ft 11). Being so short and overweight and perimenopausal, am totally screwed. This is motivating me to do something (stop scoffing Ritter dark with hazelnuts. That thing will send me to he'll!)

You don't feel middle aged and you are right? What does that mean. Genuine question as I don't feel 48 ( despite the back pain) but I look 58.

I know I need to measure my waist but am scared. My tum and middle never returned to pregnancy so I have a big protruding tummy and navel. I love my kids but gosh pregnancy and birth destroyed me.
This thread has really scared me.

We’re the same weight and you look exactly how I did a year ago when I was 75kg (which I think is about thr same weight). I just didn’t feel all THAT overweight. I did exercise classes, looked a bit chubby but totally normal.
Anyway, I’m now 20Kg down at 55kg (Mounjaro) and honestly I do feel a lot better. I didn’t realise that the pains in my hips were weight related. Plus I’m stronger and fitter as the weight doesn’t get in the way of training.
