To think "smashing" is a thoroughly underused word these days?

My colleague (fabulous old boy, clearly had a whale of a time in the sixties) used it today and I thought, you just don't hear that enough!

Even better - "smasher", as in he/she's a smasher.

Ninny! I'd forgotten that one completely. How utterly and perfectly splendiferous.

onebatmother · 05/06/2008 23:47

Ah. I knew I'd misspelled it.

perfect is good

"I must look a perfect ninny!"

MadBadandDangeroustoKnow · 05/06/2008 23:53

But have you, OBM? Maybe I have. What an utter twerp!

onebatmother · 05/06/2008 23:57

but you are a top-hole chap though MB, so no harm done.

orf to bed, trapped for all time in 1956 Godalming.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 06/06/2008 00:02

Splendid is most underused.

I say many of those words and as a result, DS repeats them regularly, sounding like an old man. "Oh mummy, that would be marvellous" He's 3

booblies · 06/06/2008 00:03

Devilish is an absolutely marvelous word methinks!

ButterflyMcQueen · 06/06/2008 00:08

just ate some fiendishly good chocolate!

MrsJohnCusack · 06/06/2008 00:11

I say crikey a lot. I am going to say smashing a whole lot more. And I do use 'beastly' and 'corking' quite a lot

and I love 'marvellous' 'swoony' and 'gosh'

booblies · 06/06/2008 00:11

absolutely top knotch?

JodieG1 · 06/06/2008 00:12

I never use words like this, I grew up in the East End though and am no doubt far too common.

VeniVidiVickiQV · 06/06/2008 00:17

I say 'crikey' a lot too! I use it when I'd like to say "fuckin ada" but cant

TheRealMrsOsborne · 06/06/2008 07:17

My very favourite -

By jingo!

Nearly spat my drink out when my parents very old friend said this

SniffyHock · 06/06/2008 08:54

Razzie - 'buff ting aling' is Fan. Tastic.!!!

margoandjerry · 06/06/2008 11:12

buff ting aling - love it.

Am also campaigning for reintroduction of terms of endearment such as "duckie".

VictorianSqualor · 06/06/2008 11:21

I love all these words.

Always say Gosh and Crikey.

I also think people should use 'shan't' much more. Such a wonderfully English word, and sounds great when spoken.

MadBadandDangeroustoKnow · 06/06/2008 11:31

Aww! My grandma always used to call me (and everyone else I guess) duckie.

Vulgar · 06/06/2008 11:32

In vulgar household we say "tipping down" instead of "pissing down"

"splendid tea" for a marvellous spread of cakes/sandwiches and tea!

Goodness me! instead of "Fuck that for a game of soldiers"

Hideous/beastly/old chap are oft used.

All spoken in received pronouncation.

EustaciaVye · 06/06/2008 11:37

I say "Goodness Me" and "Oh, My word!" a lot. DD1 now copies when she is excited about things.

We also say Crikey and Blimey.

Smashing is lovely and I now resolve to start using it.

OverMyDeadBody · 06/06/2008 11:39

I say 'awfully good' a lot, and 'rather!' but only in the company of family or others who won't snigger childishly

OverMyDeadBody · 06/06/2008 11:40

Bravo is a thoroughly underused word too. I shall attempt to revive it I think.

theBOD · 06/06/2008 12:00

only works for me if said in a "ruddy old english" type of way like my maths tutor used to say it. i'm not sure what region of england the accent comes from but it's quite similar to the drunk major off the fast show.
then it sounds quality.

brightongirldownunder · 06/06/2008 12:21

I'm going to use all of these words and say them in a really posh accent to piss off the Aussies here in Sydney! I see them cringe every time someone speaks the queens english - saying tat I do too. Smashing is a truly wonderful word!
I say crikey and blimey all the time too.
I know this isn't a truly old english phrase but i say `'sheesh kebab" when things go wrong. Don't ask why..I dunno.
My mum says "jolly jimbucks" and my great aunt of 99 says "absolutely splendid" when she's impressed with something.
I like "hurrah!" - infact i'm now going to say it for the rest of the night..

totalmisfit · 06/06/2008 12:22

i'm so embarrassed now because i still use 'fuck' and 'wanker'

Right, today i shall turn over a new leaf, it'll be 'crikey!' and 'what an utter rotter' next time someone tries to run me over

MadBadandDangeroustoKnow · 06/06/2008 12:29

Have just remembered 'yonks' to mean a long time.

"Hello darling! Haven't seen you for ages. Simply yonks!"
