To think "smashing" is a thoroughly underused word these days?

My colleague (fabulous old boy, clearly had a whale of a time in the sixties) used it today and I thought, you just don't hear that enough!

Even better - "smasher", as in he/she's a smasher.

dp uses cracking alot, that's a cracking record, i blame stuart maconie.

smashing is sweet.

onebatmother · 05/06/2008 19:21

I would like to be called a little cracker, but I fear it is now unlikely to happen.

xlr8 · 05/06/2008 19:22

I use smashing alot and my fave is golly gosh

MargaretMountford · 05/06/2008 19:25

I was teased once for saying 'beastly'

MargaretMountford · 05/06/2008 19:25

how about 'rather !" ?

Saggarmakersbottomknocker · 05/06/2008 19:27

Spiffing thread, super.

mylovelymonster · 05/06/2008 19:27

I heard a lovely lady on the radio today use a much loved word, but one I'd forgotten all about til she said it - ravishing

mylovelymonster · 05/06/2008 19:28

I use 'golly' rather a lot - as in "golly, that was lucky"

Twitmonster · 05/06/2008 19:28

I felt that twit was rather under used personally

mylovelymonster · 05/06/2008 19:29

I do love smashing and rather - they make me smile

mylovelymonster · 05/06/2008 19:30

and I don't think YABU at all, btw

Niecie · 05/06/2008 19:33

I use rather a lot of these

-Gosh
-Fab
-Goodness
-golly
-jolly
-cracking

I could add 'good grief' to the list as well!

Do I have a deep seated subconscious regret that I wasn't a 1950's school girl or have I read too much Enid Blyton?

gooseberryfoolmoonfiend · 05/06/2008 19:34

I love smashing!
And tremendous!

gooseberryfoolmoonfiend · 05/06/2008 19:36
mylovelymonster · 05/06/2008 19:37

if they do come, we can all set upon them and give them a jolly good biffing

gooseberryfoolmoonfiend · 05/06/2008 19:38

yES, THEN DEBAG THE ROTTERS!

WowOoo · 05/06/2008 19:41

Tomorrow I shall say:

gadzooks
smashing
and I'll be jiggered.

And probably FANtastic.

WowOoo · 05/06/2008 19:43

Tremendous? Is somebody out there Welsh or something?!
My favourite word EVER.

Niecie · 05/06/2008 19:43

These are all splendid, absolutely splendid.

WowOoo · 05/06/2008 19:44

Will get my coat and proceed to pedant's corner now.

mylovelymonster · 05/06/2008 19:46

I'm fair bowled over with this utterly delightful and thoroughly scrumptious thread....

onebatmother · 05/06/2008 19:46

I say crikey, super, "rather marvellous", "Oh bravo!" And "Good Lord!"

in fact, all my exclamations are rather 1950s.

I think it's something I unconsciously developed when I was trying to wean myself from saying "Fuck me! What a complete c**t that wanker is" in my mid-twenties.

Went overboard, as usual.

SniffyHock · 05/06/2008 19:47

DS's friend (terribly, terribly but a super little boy) once said 'I shan't play with you any more. You are a dirty little creature' !!!!!

I use it all the time now - 'come here you dirty lttle creature!'

SniffyHock · 05/06/2008 19:47

They were 3 BTW!

mylovelymonster · 05/06/2008 19:47

mellowing in your dotage, onebat?
