To dislike being called "ladies"

Disco2022 · 22/10/2025 23:35

It seems to happen on here more recently and there's something about it which just grates on me! It makes me want to swear and announce "I'm no lady,"
It also reminds me a bit of David Dickinson when he used to say "Ladies, may I call you girls" in that sickening sleazy way.
Much prefer just being called a woman.
Anyway fairly light-hearted just a late night ponder.

Person offends nobody. Why would you be offended by being referred to as a person?

Sorry, I'm confused. If you are "clearly female" then why would someone not be able to tell what your gender is??

None of this makes sense.

@Greysowhat well person offends me so you just assumed it offended nobody which isn't very inclusive?

I said, using the word person implies to me that they couldn't determine the gender of someone so went with the safe option of "person". And the reason I personally would find that offensive is because I am clearly a female.

But we both have the right to an option, neither is right or wrong, everyone is an individual. However I feel like you just want to argue so I'll bid you good day, thanks for your opinions.

Hate it too, like something out of the Victorian age, makes me squirm

IstillloveKingThistle · 23/10/2025 00:39

I hate it .
An example for me is the class WhatsApp group ( all on mute - then deleted .. but that’s a whole different thread) , whereby a person will ask a question and the response will be “‘thanks ladies”.
Fuck off.

I have really thought about it ( that’s how much it pisses me off ) and about what I would prefer the response to be and I’m a bit stumped - as ridiculous as it sounds .
‘ guys/ chicks / girlies ‘ Nope, not for me.

So fuck knows but yeah, agree with you wholeheartedly OP.

A plain old ‘hello’ or ‘thanks’ will do for me, nothing else needed really.

I personally don’t have a problem with ‘ladies’. Nothing wrong with being a female and ‘women’ sounds a bit more misogynistic to me. ‘Hello women, [come and do your women’s work, or do some thinking, for me]’. ‘Thanks, women [for performing your lowly duties]’. It’s those vibes IMO.

‘Guys’ I try and avoid as I know it pisses some ladies off.

‘People’ sounds like you’re pissed off at who you’re talking to.

‘Folks’ make me think ‘folx’ - way too woke. Trying too hard.

‘Girls’ again I avoid as it pisses some people off.

I’ll just stick to names or a plain greeting 😅

FanFckingTastic · 23/10/2025 13:25

Honestly, I could not care...As long as I'm not being spoken to a rude way then crack on!

OhDear111 · 23/10/2025 14:14

@Greysowhat No but so what! Ladies are still ladies so it’s a correct description. Maybe they should just be labeled as something else? It’s about time people stopped being offended so much. Who cares what the men’s game calls itself?

Of course there’s the phase “ladies and gentlemen”. I prefer it to “men and women” when being addressed by someone.

Missey85 · 23/10/2025 14:20

Is that all you've got to complain about today hey? 😂😂😂

TheoriginalMrsDarcy · 23/10/2025 14:22

We need to hold onto what ever womens rights we have left. If that involves being called a lady then so be it.

Hundslappadrifa · 23/10/2025 14:49

Why do people get so offended about shit like this these days? Haven’t you got anything better to worry about? 😂

MNLurker1345 · 23/10/2025 14:51

I love the term and do consider myself to be a “lady”, I say in my most highfaluting accent!

spoonbillstretford · 23/10/2025 15:30

I'd rather girls than ladies. It's at least not a behavioural judgement.

spoonbillstretford · 23/10/2025 15:31

helpfulperson · 23/10/2025 08:11

To me 'Hi there' sound quite rude, certainly not how I would be expect to be addressed as a customer.

Depends where you are. "Good evening" would suffice in a more formal situation. I don't need to be good eveninged in the pub.

Pashazade · 23/10/2025 16:14

@CurlewKate when I teach it’s female dominated (usually only women) so it’s never been an issue, I guess I might use Gents or possibly chaps, mixed group I might go for folks. 🤷🏻‍♀️

OonaStubbs · 23/10/2025 17:57

I am going to start using "humans" - that cannot offend anyone surely?

@OonaStubbs my friend refers to everyone as Bean. She always has. She says that we're all "human beans". She might be onto something 🤔 not much to get offended over by Bean is there? Plus gender neutral as far as I'm aware!

Oblomov25 · 23/10/2025 18:31

I quite like ladies. Don't mind any of them actually.

GreenFritillary · 23/10/2025 18:34

Hello there. Hi friends, folks, everyone. I loathe being called a lady.

Oh god that would make me physically recoil. Human Beans. It's giving early 00s David Brent. It's one of those things that the person saying thinks is an original, witty thought, but it's just tiresome.

@ResusciAnnie completely agree, but it is gender neutral 😅 I don't think there's any other phrase in the world that's gender neutral, well according to this thread! (Hyperbole obviously).

utamea · 23/10/2025 19:06

Difficult really. I recall that 40 years ago woman/women used as an address was not very polite. It implied you were not a lady. If you said “that woman there” instead of “that lady there” it would imply that you thought the woman was not a lady - ie a bit of a tramp.

HangingOver · 23/10/2025 19:07

CalmShaker · 22/10/2025 23:58

I actually find David a true old school gentleman and think you are being unreasonable, I have voted accordingly.

I've worked with him, he's an egomaniac.

Someone who was very disparaging about me calls her family members, bean. Yuk and cringe.

airportfloor · 23/10/2025 19:10

I absolutely hate it too but cannot stop saying it and writing it. Thanks ladies!

Bec1968 · 23/10/2025 19:34

I always use 'ladies' ....

At work when i walk into staff room or when im leaving, I say .... hello ladies or bye ladies have a great afternoon etc ..

eatreadsleeprepeat · 23/10/2025 19:44

I am another one who grew up to think that ladies was politer than women. For mixed sex groups I would say, hi all or hi folks, in groups of people I am closer to I would say thank you ladies because that is what everyone in the group says. I am quite conscientious about trying to keep up with the currently accepted terminology and don’t want to offend people but sometimes the accepted term changes overnight.

OchreReader · 23/10/2025 19:53

OonaStubbs · 23/10/2025 01:23

What are people supposed to say? Girls? Ladies? Women? Pretty much every term offends somebody for some reason.

I agree!
