To have too many E-readers

As a lifelong reader I tried a kindle years ago and hated it. Loved the physicality of books and thought id never change. But then i got one as a gift - a paperwhite 11th edition and im so hooked I’ve bought the 12th edition in a different colour and revitalised my son’s old oasis. That’s one for upstairs one for downstairs and one for my bag! I can’t imagine buying another book! Anyone else out there completely converted?

I used to spout that purist stuff about real books until I got my kindle.

Pastlast · 22/10/2025 20:06

I don’t want to be locked into Amazon. But I’m considering a kobo.

DappledThings · 22/10/2025 20:06

Never tried one yet. I am always very late to adopt any new technology so bookshops will probably have to disappeared from every high street before I'll try any kind of ereader

outofofficeagain · 22/10/2025 20:08

I love my kindle. I have rubbish eyes so I like the light and changing the font size.

I’m considering a kobo though due to amazon being annoying

OliveHenry · 22/10/2025 20:24

You don't have to buy everything from Amazon if you have a Kindle.

I use Calibre (free) on my PC to transfer books bought elsewhere onto my Kindle (it's drag and drop and very simple to use). There are probably other ways too!

Sterlingrose · 22/10/2025 20:26

I love my Kindle. Hardly ever read a paper book now.
You can buy books elsewhere and transfer them to your Kindle using apps like bookfunnel. Although on a kobo you can borrow them from the library.

I've not read a paper book in about 10 years. I love my kindle. Pretty much take it everywhere.

Baggiesfan · 22/10/2025 20:37

Love my kindle but do still love the feel of an actual book, we went to Jane Austen's house last month and bought nice copies of all 6 of her books.
What does piss me off though is when a book on kindle is the same price or even more than the actual book. How can that be?

Hartofpixie · 22/10/2025 20:42

I have a Kobo and it's absolutely brilliant. Paid for itself multiple times due to borrowing from the library. And clicky buttons to turn the pages! So much better than a swipe.

oh yes this. That’s the only thing. With kindle unlimited I was a bit naive and thought this meant a huge haul of £1 books! Not! Just paid £12.99 for a new out hardback on kindle 😱 BUT there are too many other things about it I love for it to matter.

So the kindle oasis has the buttons to turn the pages. Sadly they don’t make it anymore but I have the 2019 version and though the battery life is poor it’s a great e-reader. Borrowing from the library is brilliant ! I can see the kobo appeal.

It doesn't fully explain it, but I believe you don't pay VAT on paper books but you do on eBooks.

GasperyJacquesRoberts · 22/10/2025 20:52

I love real books and I've got shelves full of the things. But these days I read way more on my kindle paperwhite than I do off a page. It's just so convenient and the screen is delightful. I hate that I'm putting even more money into Bezos's yacht collection but it's soooo good.

This. How is it that we read so much more on a kindle? I read faster too. So get through so many more books.

I have a Kindle 3, Kindle Voyage, Kobo Mini, Kobo Clara Colour and a Pocketbook.

You don't have too many ereaders 😄

(I don't buy Kindle ebooks anymore because of the restriction on letting you download and transfer via USB. That's why I got the Clara.)

TowerRavenSeven · 22/10/2025 20:57

I always fob my old ones off on dh - to be fair he asks for them. I currently use an iPad mini because I read at night and like by background dark dark black and I can’t get that with e ink.

DancefloorAcrobatics · 22/10/2025 21:00

Yep, I actually collect a certain genere of hard copy books (and read them).

But for my every day reading it's my kindle all the way! So much easier & cheaper. I can even have books in other languages within seconds.... can't beat it!

AnnaQuayInTheUk · 22/10/2025 21:01

I've got a Kindle which is great for travelling and holidays. But I still prefer a physical book

Thats fair enough but surely that's offset by the production, delivery costs etc

I've found some great new authors buying £1 books, it also means you've not wasted your money if you dont like it

Baggiesfan · 22/10/2025 21:05

You still cant beat browsing in a bookshop, I could do that for hours

You don’t pay VAT on ebooks any more (changed in 2020). Unless it’s changed again.
With ebooks publishers are allowed to set the prices themselves, whereas with physical books I don’t think it’s allowed. Not all publishers do this but the big ones I’m certain do. There used to be a tag on Amazon saying Price set by publisher.
I imagine they want to keep it similar to physical books - apparently a bog standard paperback is fairly cheap to print (I read somewhere 50p) - but the work that goes into a book before printing is the same whichever way you read it. I do understand the perceived value of ebooks is lower and I definitely think sometimes new releases are priced way too high.

Thisismadness · 22/10/2025 21:17

I have a kindle but mostly read on my iPad and phone. What I love most is being able to pick up the same book on these different devices so I’ll be reading something at home then can carry on with it on my phone on the train or whatever. Being able to increase the fonts on any of the devices also works well with my fading eyesight!

cariadlet · 22/10/2025 21:20

I bought a Kindle years ago and promised my partner that I'd stop buying books because I wouldn't need to.

That didn't last long.

I love having physical books all around me and can't resist a good mooch in a bookshop.
I take my Kindle as an emergency back up if I'm travelling but rarely actually use it.

But I am a convert to audio books. I love them if I'm doing something like gardening where I can't actually hold a book and I do like listening to an audio book when I'm in bed, especially if I'm too tired to read.

Love my Kindle! I used to have Kobos, WH Smith used to sell them but then they had none in stock (or so it seemed) for ages. I really loved the Kobo Mini, it was only about £30 and as it was only 5 inches, it fitted well into the smallest of bags. If they re-launched that I’d definitely get one, even though I also have a kindle.
