Should I get the flu jab?

Paperclipelasticband · 22/10/2025 16:57

I’ve got the option to have it free through work

I am not in an ‘at risk’ category and I know people who have felt awful after having this years jab

What would you do?

YABU - have the jab
YANBU - don’t have it, there’s no need

I had flu and Covid vaccine in the same arm, same day and not a single side effect
i do usually react too

Sarah2891 · 22/10/2025 16:59

My mum usually reacts to it but she had no issue with it this year.

PersonalPityParty · 22/10/2025 17:02

It helps protect the people around you that you may see as part of your job, and your loved ones. It’s to prevent you getting it and passing it to those that are vulnerable, who may not make a full immune response for example. Will you be seeing any elderly relatives over Christmas or anything?
You can have flu, carry it and be infectious, but not even really be ill so wouldn’t know, but would be spreading it to close contacts.

Holdonforsummer · 22/10/2025 17:08

I’m going to get it. I usually do, forgot last year and was really ill over Christmas.

Medstudent12 · 22/10/2025 17:09

It protects people around you. I would. I have done so on Monday.

MrsSkylerWhite · 22/10/2025 17:10

Yes, I’d get it.

MrsBennetsPoorNervesAreBack · 22/10/2025 17:10

I felt a bit rough a couple of days after the jab, but nothing major and tbh it might have been completely unconnected.

I would have it.

ClockworkGoose · 22/10/2025 17:12

I’ve never reacted to it but it’s not about you being vulnerable. It’s about the people you come into contact with if you catch it being vulnerable.

Peridot1 · 22/10/2025 17:12

Some friends in Australia had flu this winter there (so over our summer) and were really ill with it. So it was a no brainer for me. No side effects either.

Perfectlypea · 22/10/2025 17:13

I was a healthy 18 year old when I got a case of flu that made me so ill that I had to take 2 weeks off work. I couldn’t do anything but lay in bed and got a secondary chest infection on top. It took me a good 2 months before I was back to normal, no fun when you’re that age and desperate to get back out clubbing!

I think sometimes people don’t realise just how serious it can be. Why would you want to go through that - I always have my vaccination.

Bulbsbulbsbulbs · 22/10/2025 17:13

Ever since I had flu and had to take 3 weeks off work and felt like I was dying I've had it.

SleepingStandingUp · 22/10/2025 17:13

I've been absolutely fine after mine, as did my 10 year old who had the jab

BashfulClam · 22/10/2025 17:14

Had mine two weeks ago, no effects yet.

WhatNoRaisins · 22/10/2025 17:14

I always pay for one, never had side effects so it's worth it for less chance of getting ill.

DrinkFeckArseBrick · 22/10/2025 17:17

I always get one since I had flu 10 years ago. A week in bed, couldn't even shower I felt so bad, and another week off work recovering. I did feel a bit lousy for 24 hours after the vaccine but not enough to stop me working or anything. Its a no brainer for me

GoBackToTheStart · 22/10/2025 17:19

I’m pregnant so feeling generally pretty shit anyway and certainly susceptible to feeling worse. I had flu and RSV jabs in the same arm at the same time so I expected to be knocked out for a bit, but I didn’t feel any more shit than normal afterwards.

I normally get a flu jab through work and have had a few occasions of feeling a bit ropey for a day after, but better that than the actual flu!

Topseyt123 · 22/10/2025 17:20

I have it every year and have for about the last 5 years. I had it done the first weekend of this October, as did my DH. Neither of us has reacted at all.

Get it. It would probably help stop you getting the anticipated nastier strains of flu this year, and even if you do get them then the severity could well be greatly reduced.

It's also about helping to keep not just you as safe as possible, but also other people around you, some of whom could be particularly vulnerable.

RhinestoneCowgirl · 22/10/2025 17:21

I've never had the flu and would like to keep it that way. I also sometimes work with young children, so I pay for my own flu jab (too young to get it for free yet). Most I've ever had is a bit of a sore arm

TennisLady · 22/10/2025 17:22

Even if you did get any side effects trust me it’s a million times better than having the flu!

pinkbackground · 22/10/2025 17:23

hubby and I pay to have it each year as we work with alot of elderly people so don’t want to pass it on to them. Feel fine afterwards.

R0setheHat · 22/10/2025 17:32

I had my flu jab on Monday morning, so did my OH, plus we both had a Jap Enc booster (going away soon) in the same arm at the same time. Neither of us are at risk. Neither of us have had any reactions or issues. We tend to have it every year because I don’t want flu. I had flu very badly about 7 years ago. I was very ill and it took me months to get back to normal. I’m usually very fit without any medical issues at all, so it knocked me for six and I just think life’s too short to get ill like that again with flu unnecessarily. I’ve never felt ill, got flu or had a reaction after the flu jab. Bit of a sore arm on occasion for a day, but nothing to write home about.

TwilightAb · 22/10/2025 17:36

I didn't have the jab last year (usually get offered it as I have asthma) and came down with flu just before Christmas. I was so unwell and my family who did have the jab were all absolutly fine. I vowed that I would have it this year and had it done a few days ago. So yes I would say absolutely go for it!

user2848502016 · 22/10/2025 17:38

I’ve had it when offered for free and never had side effects apart from sore arm. I know it affects people differently but usually the side effects are much better than getting the flu

Kidsgotothatschool · 22/10/2025 17:46

I had flu a good few years ago at Christmas and it lasted a good couple of weeks and the nasty ongoing effects lasted well into February. It was a bleak start to the year.

I know it doesn’t offer a 100% guarantee but I do know flu is no joke so have the jab.

Scampuss · 22/10/2025 18:03

I've had it for the first time this year, and, despite always at least having a swollen/sore injection site and usually having tiredness etc. with every vaccine I've ever had, I have had nothing.
