Teacher- Hospital bladder surgery(cystoscopy- dilation) on same day as parents evening?

Se12345 · 20/10/2025 21:00

Little between two things. My bladder surgery day has been set to a date where school has rearranged as parents evening. After this operation I won’t be able to work for day at least but it falls right on the same day which means I miss parents evening. I’m the full time class teacher so no other teacher to cover for me.

What would you do- delay and rearrange by couple months or tell the school there’s nothing you can do and you will be off in an operation ? I will be out asleep for this.

Tell the school when the operation is happening and they will have to find a way around it. Your parents can be offered a different day.

JohnnyMcGrathSaysFuckOff · 20/10/2025 21:04

Hi OP, I have had this and had a bad reaction to it (strong post procedure pain). This is, according to the staff, rare - but has happened to me twice now.

I think it's 99% chance you will not have a similar reaction, but of course it is a possibility. I personally would see if the parent consultations can be moved as your health comes first.

BournardTourney · 20/10/2025 21:04

Tell the school you will be off in an operation. You can discuss an alternative like being available on a different day for your appointments or you can send your comments out to parents or school could arrange for someone to do your appointments based on your script-notes.
The one thing you do not do is reschedule- never put your health second to a job

Fedupwiththecuts · 20/10/2025 21:04

Have the operation.
Your health is more important.
Having lost a dear colleague, I speak from experience of the worst thing. But life has to go on and we had to fill in the gaps. The kids and parents coped.
It doesn't feel like it, but it's just a job.
Hugs to you.

Don't delay your surgery for parents evening, ask the school to arrange it for another day.

Thank you this is what my husband is saying.

Do you work to live or do you live to work? Have the operation!

hopspot · 20/10/2025 21:06

I had this when I was off sick. It was rearranged for a few weeks later when I was better. It was no hassle and many staff have done this for different reasons.

Would they ever do that?

Our primary did.

i’d ask to do it before your op so that it’s over and done with

GeorgeBeckett · 20/10/2025 21:08

As a parent I would much rather you had your surgery as planned and we caught up on a different date. I definitely don’t want you trying to groggily do parents evening or for your to wait longer.

farewellperformance · 20/10/2025 21:10

they can definitely rearrange parents evenings. My dd’s teacher was sick on the day of parents evening and did it a week later.

Did you do the dilation? Did it help and was it worth it? How long did it affect you for afterwards?

They did this at our primary when teacher was ill - our class just came in on a different week. It was fine

Bladderknowledge · 20/10/2025 21:13

NC as outing.

Cystoscopy is no fun, but it is an examination procedure rather than a surgery. Most people are fine right afterwards, with a bit of tenderness and a tiny bit of blood when they urinate. Even if you have some type of relaxant you will probably be okay.

I agree your health comes first, however!
I would expect everyone to understand this.

Very best wishes

Amammai · 20/10/2025 21:15

100% have the op and ask for parents eve to be moved once you are recovered. If school leaders have. problem, that is their problem! I have had several colleagues over the years that have been ill on parents eve days and they have just caught it up the next week. Never had parental complaints, people know we’re human.

If you postpone the op, what’s to say the next date won’t also clash with another school event?

Hercisback1 · 20/10/2025 21:16

Oh my gosh don't postpone. Nothing is more important than your health!

UnicornSchool · 20/10/2025 21:17

My dc teacher had her parents evening on a different day. Really wasn't an issue for us as parents and if it was for some then that's their proble. Was cancelled and rescheduled.

Dont stress let school solve it and you look after yourself as priority

Best of luck

Pricelessadvice · 20/10/2025 21:18

I’ve had this procedure under a GA
and probably could have done a parents evening later on (I used to be a teacher so know what parents evening involves, but I did feel absolutely fine after the procedure) but you shouldn’t really have to. Id tell the school you have surgery booked and can parents evening be rebooked for you or can you arrange phone calls with parents at a later date?

Thejoyofdecluttering · 20/10/2025 21:18

Priority 1 - your health.
Priority 2 - those you teach and their parents evening.
Priority 3 - the head and his/her schedule.
From a retired teacher.

NaranjaDreams · 20/10/2025 21:19

I'd ask for a different day, as others have said. It's not a big deal for your parents to come in a week later or something.

But to balance out some of the other comments, while it's very individual, I've had this and was back at work within a couple of hours. I respond well to GA and came round immediately, was allowed to leave as soon as I'd eaten and used the bathroom, and felt absolutely fine. It worked well for me, too. The only strange bit I remember is peeing blood a bit for a few days but there was no pain and it passed quickly.

Best of luck.

If they want the parents evening to go ahead then they will have to. They can't stop you having surgery that you need - pretty sure that is protected. Neither can they force you to host parents evening from your hospital bed.

I am a parent and I would not give two hoots if my child's class teacher could not do parents evening because she was having surgery. There will be other opportunities to speak to her.

Trying2310 · 20/10/2025 21:21

Health comes first everytime. Have the operation and rest up. Don't even give another thought to parents evening. If a parent has a pressing issue they can contact you when you are fit and well.

I was just reading that the dilation requires a spinal or GA. That makes rest sound more important!

Really glad everyone agrees OP’s health comes first

Your health is most important. The school can rearrange parents evening
