Teacher- Hospital bladder surgery(cystoscopy- dilation) on same day as parents evening?

Se12345 · 20/10/2025 21:00

Little between two things. My bladder surgery day has been set to a date where school has rearranged as parents evening. After this operation I won’t be able to work for day at least but it falls right on the same day which means I miss parents evening. I’m the full time class teacher so no other teacher to cover for me.

What would you do- delay and rearrange by couple months or tell the school there’s nothing you can do and you will be off in an operation ? I will be out asleep for this.

It is rather a long story but I missed parents evening for concert. I just rang parents over the next two days, it was fine.

Safahh · 21/10/2025 20:16

The school doesn't get to have rearranged parents' eve to that day in the first place. The calendar should be set out ahead, and you could have had anything else planned on that day. Your surgery is more important. They must allow you to contact parents at another time and by rights, they should allow all teaching staff to opt to do this on the date originally calendared if they insist on inviting parents in when staff aren't available to work!

Smartiepants79 · 21/10/2025 20:16

What kind of school is this?? My primo would just allocate another day in a heart beat. You’re their only teacher?? Then arrange it to suit you. If you were vomiting or in an accident it would just be cancelled and postponed.

HelloGreen · 21/10/2025 20:25

Is this your first year of teaching? Or are you in a particularly toxic school? I can’t see why you’re worrying that they won’t rearrange your parents evening.

It sounds like you’re really stressed out about this. Commit to the operation and tell the school straight away so they can come up
with a plan B for you (doing them as telephone appointments across another week for example). Basically get your response from the school asap so you can put the stress of it behind you.

FrippEnos · 21/10/2025 20:48

Do not move your surgery.

Whatever happens in your job, and teaching is just a job, is for them to sort out.

Schools (HTs etc.) don't really care about staff wellbeing and are quite happen for you to work yourself in to the ground.

Do what is best for you.

Buttcraic · 21/10/2025 20:51

Please i beg you, prioritise your health. There are so many other alternative ways to contact parents.

Bumblebee72 · 21/10/2025 20:56

One of our children's parents evening was rescheduled today with 3 hours notice as the teacher was ill. What else can they do? I'd expect them to rearrange parents evening for a scheduled operation.

Icebreakhell · 21/10/2025 20:58

When you pee after cystoscopy it’s like peeing knives. It doesn’t last long but is bloody sore. Plus you pee blood for a bit. Hope all goes ok x

pIum · 21/10/2025 21:01

As a parent and teacher, I really don't think you should be worrying about this. It's only because of what I know some schools are like that I understand why you are. It's really no big deal, just have the operation. Everyone will cope just fine.

Katykaty11 · 21/10/2025 21:04

My head teacher wouldn't hesitate to rearrange your parents' evening. It's happened many times for various personal reasons. Never any negative responses from parents either.

Bladderknowledge · 20/10/2025 21:13

NC as outing.

Cystoscopy is no fun, but it is an examination procedure rather than a surgery. Most people are fine right afterwards, with a bit of tenderness and a tiny bit of blood when they urinate. Even if you have some type of relaxant you will probably be okay.

I agree your health comes first, however!
I would expect everyone to understand this.

Very best wishes

How on earth is this "outing"? Confused
OP, as a parent I would be mortified to think you had delayed a medical procedure in order to talk to me about my precious little angel. Especially with waiting lists as they are - you might be waiting till next summer!
Definitely have the procedure and rearrange the parents evening.

liquoricetorpedoes · 21/10/2025 21:19

Fellow teacher here, please do not postpone your surgery. School will have to rearrange. Good luck.

The poster meant that she had name changed as she didn’t want to talk about personal health matters under her usual username; she may not be anonymous.

She hasn’t done anything wrong so I’m not sure why you’re pulling faces at her, to be honest.

Se12345 · 20/10/2025 21:06

Would they ever do that?

It has happened at my school when a teacher is unable to be there. You need the operation so the school will have to work round your needs not the other way round. Your health is the most important thing.

pumpkinscake · 21/10/2025 21:22

Zero doubt, school have to rearrange

PathOfLeastResitance · 21/10/2025 21:22

I've had this within my team on a few occasions and I arranged parents evening for a different evening for that one class and then also stayed for the 2 extra evenings so that the teacher wasn’t alone. I’ve also had it where the teacher was sick on the day of parents evening and did the same thing.
Never put your work before your health (particularly for parents evening!)

Bethymum · 21/10/2025 21:24

Very simply your health comes first

MrsHamlet · 21/10/2025 21:48

Scarydinosaurs · 21/10/2025 19:55

Of course they can move parents evening. Have the operation. This is your health - you can’t mess about with it.

Actually, if the OP is covered by STPCD, they can't. But she simply doesn't do it because she is unwell.

BCBird · 21/10/2025 21:50

Do not delay your procedure. Your health is more important than the Parents' Evening.

Borethefuckoff · 21/10/2025 21:53

My sons teacher rearranged his parents evening and we haven’t had it yet due to teacher having an op. Annoying but I understand as do the other parents I’m sure.

soupyspoon · 21/10/2025 22:01

I had surgery on my bladder in my early 20s, I had small tumours, nothing wrong but they needed to be removed. I thought I was going to be in work the next day!!

Lol

Had over a week off. Incredibly painful weeing afterwards

Obviously you're not having quite the same but believe me, you'll be exhausted and in discomfort if not pain.

For the following 10 years I had to have cystoscopys to check my bladder once a year. A day off each time. Not pleasant.

Take your time, focus on your health.

Thunderdcc · 21/10/2025 23:01

We got the email about parents evening this week. Two dates but on one of those days Mr X is only available until 5pm so for his class only here is a 3rd date.

Seems perfectly reasonable to me.

Eenameenadeeka · 21/10/2025 23:09

Surgery first, school can arrange your parent meetings for another day (ours has done this in the past when needed) take care of yourself!

This. Why are you even stressing about this? The date for procedure is set. The end. You will not be available for parent interviews. They must be rescheduled to a time that suits you. Any issues contact your union.

ByQuaintAzureWasp · 22/10/2025 00:45

Tell them school what us happening. My suggestion would be for you to send a written report to each parent in advance if parents evening or invite them to make a telephone appointment with you within the weeks around your appointment.
