Do you check your tyre pressure once a month?

Because this is what my manual says. I have never heard of having to do this before. Change the pressure if you're transporting something heavy or check it if you're going on a long trip, yes. But I didn't know you have to check it once a month. I've never seen my parents do this either.

what else don't I know Confused

YABU: everyone knows this, you idiot!
YANBU: I didn't know either and don't check regularly

Most modern cars have sensors these days so would tell you, but in my older vehicles without them , yes I check monthly.

DappledThings · 17/10/2025 15:50

Nah. Before a long journey and when the warning light comes on.

TMMC1 · 17/10/2025 15:51

It's totally normal to set the pressure for different types of driving, but if you are doing a one off tip run with a car full you should be ok without doing anything.

Most cars will now warn you if the pressures are low and tell you which tyre.
If yours doesn't, yes, you should regularly check for your own safety and others on the road. You aren't being unreasonable, just a little naive, and that's ok!

Fifthtimelucky · 17/10/2025 16:06

My husband does it every week!

Didntask · 17/10/2025 16:07

No, i just wait for my car to tell me.

Netcurtainnelly · 17/10/2025 16:08

Not every week, but yes from time to time.

didntlikeanyofthesuggestions · 17/10/2025 16:11

More than once a month as I check mine at a certain point in my menstrual cycle

Vaxtable · 17/10/2025 16:11

My last few cars have sensors that tell you the pressure so I look approx once a month. Before that I did use to get them checked every couple of months

BiddyPopthe2nd · 17/10/2025 16:15

I used to check about every 2 months when I was using my car a lot locally, and also specifically before long trips a few times a year. I tended to check tyres, oil and top up washer fluid while getting petrol. And occasionally added a treat for the car of a hoovering, if I went to the place that needed payment I I rattled through the pressure and water jobs with time left to spare.

Since I moved overseas, I don’t use the car nearly as much and haven’t found good places to check them (my petrol station is a single pump on a residential corner), I’ve had that car 5 months and it was fully checked before I got it.

PocketSand · 17/10/2025 16:15

I have an at home pump which works on mains or through cigarette lighter socket so I pump up my tyres as needed at least once a month.

ohtowinthelottery · 17/10/2025 16:16

About 40 years ago, I'd have checked the tyre pressures and the oil level every weekend, but cars have changed now and have sensors for just about everything, so I no longer do it, plus I rarely do long journeys in my car and there a no motorways and very few dual carriageway where I live.
I do, however, prompt DH to check the tyres on his car if we are doing a long journey.

Bitzee · 17/10/2025 16:18

Is the car very old? I’ve had cars with sensors ever since I was old enough to do my own car stuff rather than my Dad doing it for me…

ComfortFoodCafe · 17/10/2025 16:19

Nah, my car has it on the drivers display when I start it up.

flutterby1 · 17/10/2025 16:19

My mom always told me to do the tyres, put antifreeze in, water ?? Screen wash , check the oil and years ago put water over these little cell things over the battery!! I just do the tyres before a long journey

I have one of these, it’s great. I credit it with meeting most of the neighbours because I was able to lend it out when the road got done by the tyre extinguishers 🤣

Shade17 · 17/10/2025 16:23

Presumably you’ve read the Highway Code before? You should be doing it weekly if your car doesn’t have a TPMS system which displays the actual pressure.

marginallyawake · 17/10/2025 16:25

I check weekly, always have done. I’ve only owned older cars without sensors.

LemograssLollipop · 17/10/2025 17:02

There was a segment on Morning Live about making sure your car is ready for the winter including tyre checks, oil/windscreen washer levels and making sure you have in the boot a warm blanket, bottle of water, that sort of thing.

FuzzyWolf · 17/10/2025 17:08

My car has a sensor that tells me when or if they get low.

Ponderingwindow · 17/10/2025 17:10

My car continuously checks the tire pressure. So did my last one. I keep my cars for 10 years so this isn’t really new tech.

I have questions.

(Amazing un, btw)

GasperyJacquesRoberts · 17/10/2025 17:45

I do a monthly check on tyre pressures, oil, washer fluid, coolant and brake fluid. While the bonnet's up I'll also have a look around to see if there's anything loose or leaking then check the windscreen wipers to see if they're fraying and maybe check the tyre tread depth. My car's got tyre pressure monitors but it doesn't take long to double-check and it's a habit now anyway. It takes 10 minutes to do all that.

RoseAlone · 17/10/2025 17:48

When I had a car that didn't have an inbuilt gauge that advises of pressure changes, I'd check the pressures at least fortnightly. You should be checking tyre wear at least that regularly too.

Sagaciously · 17/10/2025 17:51

I’ve never checked my tyre pressure in my life. My car (and at least the previous 4) will have a warning message if the pressure is low. I’d have no clue how to put in air, pathetic, I know.
