Do you check your tyre pressure once a month?

Because this is what my manual says. I have never heard of having to do this before. Change the pressure if you're transporting something heavy or check it if you're going on a long trip, yes. But I didn't know you have to check it once a month. I've never seen my parents do this either.

what else don't I know Confused

YABU: everyone knows this, you idiot!
YANBU: I didn't know either and don't check regularly

DH does it every week and before we go on a long journey.

Yes, the TPMS tells me if the tyre pressure is low but it seems to have to get very low before it triggers a message.

PermanentTemporary · 17/10/2025 17:54

No. I used to do it a lot with one car I had for a few months which I got given with the info that the tyres deflated slowly so I needed to reinflate frequently. I am so phenomenally clumsy that one night I managed to let all the air out (or maybe that was just my nightmare). When I put that car in for an MOT the report lit up like a Christmas tree and I had to junk it.

Weekly. Not monthly.

Iheartmysmart · 17/10/2025 17:57

When I bought my first car many years ago, my dad used to make me get up early every Sunday morning to check the tyres, oil, coolant and screen wash on my classic mini. It was a pain at the time but got me into a good habit of checking my car regularly. I still drive an ancient car that has no warning lights to speak of so useful to do on a weekly basis.

CrimsonStoat · 17/10/2025 17:59

I've got a new car and stupidly I thought the tyre pressure would be fine when I drove away from the dealership, so I didn't check it. Two weeks later I had the low pressure warning, which freaked me out. I headed to a garage and they were all 10 below what they should have been, and that was when hot after driving an hour. Fuck knows how that happened.

So, whilst I checked maybe every six weeks with my old car, I'll do fortnightly for a while, then drop to monthly if all seems well.

Ashersmom · 17/10/2025 18:16

My car does it itself and can even differentiate between low pressure and a puncture. I wouldn't know how to check.

That’s why mine get checked weekly. The threshold for the car showing a low pressure warning is lower than I would like to drive on.

My car is quite old, 2017, and it has an automatic alert so I just assumed most did now!! Pre Covid I was doing 1000 miles a week in a car that didn’t have the alerts and I never checked and never had an issue!

Ruggerlass · 18/10/2025 10:20

I regularly check mine via an app.

70isaLimitNotaTarget · 18/10/2025 10:24

My car has sensors but I don't rely on them exclusively.
And why would I? My car is 2016 -things go wrong .

My old car had rear parker sensors that decided to fail as I was reversing between a car and a wall with a fence at the back . I did think "Hmmm they should be shrieking like harridans now", parked up , I was close but not too close to the fence .
I didn't get them fixed , next car ddn;t have audible sensors just the red/yellow/green , present car has camera

Any way . Check I tyres every 2-3 weeks and before a long drive .

While you are about it, check you manual for the oil change intervals. Most people think it's every 10k miles but normal UK driving typically includes popping to the shops and doing the school run etc. Those short journeys qualify as "severe" driving conditions which require engine oil changed every 5k miles (or half the normal interval).

jokkkshfjjf · 18/10/2025 10:56

No because my tyres have sensors. I have a pump for the car, I just use that when the sensors trigger. Which is unfortunately quite frequently on one of our cars as it has a faulty valve.

You can usually change the threshold through the dashboard controls.

borntobequiet · 18/10/2025 10:59

I check tyres, oil, coolant once a month or so. I hate the tyre pressure alert going off when I’m actually driving.

Not on my car unfortunately. Too old probably.

The correct tyre pressure is 32 but the alarm goes off at 26.

No, i just wait for my car to tell me.

Me to !

Are you able to manually reset? Sometimes when I fill them up the sensor still says it low, but when you manually override it the system effectively records the new rating as the accepted threshold. My car is 10 years old.

Stillgroupie · 18/10/2025 18:14

Yes I do. The sensors aren't always reliable.

You can visibly see when tyres are obviously too low, seems a bit OTT to check weekly on top of visual checks with sensors these days.

NormasArse · 18/10/2025 18:24

I check mine weekly when I fill up.

ilovemydogandmrobama2 · 18/10/2025 18:28

Check mine weekly, but I do A LOT of business miles.

Also go to Kwik Fit once a month to check for punctures as a bit phobic after having a tyre blow out on the motorway with DH and all 3 DCs

RedRiverShore5 · 18/10/2025 18:29

About once a month but with a gauge thing I keep in the car.

DustyMaiden · 18/10/2025 18:29

Before I had a car that’s more demanding than DH he would wash the car check oil, tyre pressure and wash bottle, A family tradition.

Blanketpolicy · 18/10/2025 18:32

I’m in my 50s and used to when I was younger, my dad taught me to, but recent few cars have had sensors so don’t now.

Not as far as I am aware. It’s no big deal as it only takes seconds to check the pressures on the dash.

My car is 16 years old.
