To think the curly hair method is a con?

I have frizzy bird nest hair. I straightened it for years but now I’m finding that I can’t be arsed as it’s so thin it just looks lank and depressing and makes me look old and haggered when it’s straight.

So I leave it to dry naturally - massive Afro

I tried curly hair method - Looked like a hair dresser had started styling it and then got pissed on tequila half way through

its a con isn’t it? Are some people just destined to have shit hair?

If it isn’t for you, that’s fair enough. I use curly method and my hair is far from perfect but definitely an improvement on just brushing it and leaving it (frizz!!!) and straightening (mine’s also very thin).
The trigger for me to try curly was I decided to grow out my highlights and stop straightening because my hair had become very damaged and dry— I find the curls make me less bothered about my dull natural colour and the encroaching grey, plus my hair is at least healthier.
I began with expensive products that hooked me in(I agree these are a con!) but now use boots essentials curl cream and mousse. Both are really cheap, last for ages and work just as well as the expensive ones I started off with.
I’ve definitely had to embrace my hair looking messier at times, but I was never really that happy with the results when straightening either, and I feel this is more me.

My hair takes so long to air dry and I find it difficult to sit about with wet hair. And the weather is getting colder.

Any tips? Is pointing the hairdryer nozzle at the roots only reasonable? Diffuser doesn't work for me.

Naturally curly girl here. I also straightened it for years before becoming too lazy to bother anymore during the pandemic. Best thing I have found is Cantu leave in conditioner. Just apply it up the ends of my wet hair and leave it to dry naturally. Not amazing hair but good enough for this middle aged lazy bones.

I use Cantu products and only wash my hair every 5-7 days but since turning 50 my hair is so dry and frizzy. I have very thick hair. I'm not sure if my HRT gel/tabs are affecting my hair or maybe my central heating on low. we have very hard water too and not enough height in my shower to attach a special anti-hard water thing either. I take menopace/iron/collagen tablets but my hair has definitely got worse. I'm having loads cut off next week a have dry split ends and getting the hairdresser to do a deep conditioning treatment and wet cut but now I'm thinking their products probably contain sulphates plus maybe I need a dry cut and a hairdresser who specialises in Curly hair. why does it have to be so complicated 😕

Axolotyls · 18/10/2025 10:21

I’ve just washed it with Apple cider vinegar shampoo and my hair has immediately started falling out in big clumps 🤦‍♀️ oh well, I’ve t-shirt dried it, put some curl cream in and have just left it so we’ll see how it dries (presuming any of it survives!)

Oh no, that doesnt sound good. The best way to style is generally on soaking wet hair. So straight out of the shower, uses a Denman brush to brush up and outwards, put some light gel (eg Boucleme yellow gel) in and then gently scrunch. Use a diffuser on a warm setting, low power. Don't towel dry.

Aldi volume conditioner! It’s light and decent amounts of protein plus no silicone

Bother, no Aldi anywhere round here. Thanks for the reply though - I'll try to remember for next time I'm near one.

Mine is very wavy rather than tight curls and I’ve never straightened it. All I use is Boots own brand curl crème to stop the frizz. Brush and air dry, or hairdryer and scrunch upside down if I am in a hurry.

Do you follow Nuala Morley on instagram? She is a bit of a guru and has talks about styling a lot and what products to use.

I use a curl cream and then a gel. She will show you how to rake/apply both and the best advice I have taken on board is whatever products you use it has to be on soaking wet hair. If you squeeze water/towel dry a bit you will always get frizz. So I put everything on as soon as I get out of the shower and then dry myself, get dressed, do my make up. My hair is only shoulder length so I prefer to let it dry naturally. A hair bonnet is also a good idea but usually I can’t be bothered!

Go and watch a few videos by Nuala!

It's the soaking wet bit that I have the most difficulty with.

My hair dries to 'less than soaking' in the time it takes to walk the 2 steps from the shower to the bath, drier than its supposed to be for product application so it needs additional.water misting. But then it stays 'normal wet' for hours. Air drying takes 5+ hours, and diffusing doesn't really shorten it that much - the last bit of damp that's supposed to dry before you break the gel cast just will not go.

I have a special turban type towel thingy that I put mine in sometimes and that soaks up without dislodging the curls, I will try and find out where I got it from!
Do you condition and comb through in the shower?

NoBinturongsHereMate · 18/10/2025 11:01

Shampoo and condition (combing though) in shower, then do product application and scrunching over the bath because the shower cubicle is bit small for comfort.

I've got a microfibre turban (Soap & Glory) which keeps it out of the way but doesn't seem to help all that much with drying speed. And it's always fuzzier if I use that.

It’s from ‘Only Curls’ website, I could buy loads from that site!!

Looks similar to mine, but possibly a bit bigger and thicker. I can't use them this way round though, everything just gets squashed. I turn it round the other way and plop into the big end. Then secure it a little way back from the hairline at the front, so the front roots are supported for volume instead of squished.

CG moisturizes and brings out curls in curly hair.
If your hair isn’t curly it won’t create curls.
Faff free for those of us with curly hair. Shampoo doesn’t matter, use weekly. Wash hair daily with conditioner I like Diva Curl or Moroccan Oil products.
Key for me is a rich thick curl cream again Diva or M.
Don’t comb when dry, never ever brush.

All curls are different though! Mine do not need much moisture at all. If I wash my hair with conditioner or anything with shea butter they go all lank. They come to life with protein.

OP, the CG method did not work for my hair type. It’s worth trying to figure out where you sit on the curl spectrum and seeing what other people with similar hair recommend for washing and styling :)

NoBinturongsHereMate · 18/10/2025 13:45

If I washed my hair daily I'd never be able to leave the house.

Ironfloor269 · 18/10/2025 13:59

buffybots · 17/10/2025 22:22

That’s not really how it works, you can’t force curls that aren’t there unless you’re using tongs etc
a product won’t add curls - it will make them less frizzy, define them etc
my hair is naturally wavy and I could just leave it be if I wanted frizzy, undefined fly away hair but I don’t

Exactly.

Another challenge in doing CG method is, not to get caught up with all the hype the influencers are doing and get scammed into buying/adding unnecessary products/ steps. You don’t need any more than a silicone free conditioner, curl cream and maybe gel.

The original CG method is the simplest and most effective thing ever.

Shypad · 17/10/2025 14:02

Very simple after you've covered your bathroom waving your head around in a bowl plopping this and plopping that

Tell me you have no clue about the CG method without telling me…….

Update! So luckily no more hair appeared to fall out after the Apple cider vinegar fiasco. It’s mostly dried now and omg 😂 it’s curly … very curly … think 80s rock chick curly! I kinda like it but we’ll see how it looks tomorrow as to whether I’ll have the balls to go out of the house like this.

What I did differently this time …

i used apple cider vinegar shampoo and then a hair food deep conditioning mask. Combed my hair with wide tooth comb with head upside down whilst mask was on - left it for 10 mins then rinsed it off. Dried it with a t-shirt then wide tooth combed it loosely - normally I try and style it with a defined parting etc but this time I just tipped my head upside down, flipped it back over and gave it a rough comb in whatever direction the hair had naturally fallen then scrunched it with John frieda curl cream.

The result is wild 😂 it’s all over the place but like a said I actually like it! It looks like it’s meant to look like that if that makes sense?

Axolotyls · 18/10/2025 17:33

Silvertulips · 19/10/2025 06:32

Sounds brilliant!!

I remember the first time I went out curly - i’d had a curly cut and the hair dresser dried it!

I had so many compliments!!

So many in disbelief my hair curled!!

MissMuffetsTuffet · 19/10/2025 07:24

That sounds great! I'm sure it looks amazing!

Since starting wearing my hair curly, it always seems to me like so much of my hair is falling out! But the curls prevent hairs that you naturally lose from falling out, plus no brushing to remove them, plus washing my hair less often means that there's more dead hair to remove come wash day. So much hair 😑

Axolotyls · 19/10/2025 10:03

Ok - next morning …

Somehow my curls tightened up further whilst I slept and I’ve gone from 80s rock chick to Orphan Annie over night 😂

Oh well, it’s been a laugh for DH this morning if nothing else. I can’t go out like this 😂😂 I’ve tied it back for now but the curls on top of my head are springing upwards and I look like I’ve been electrocuted 😂

YABU to say you have a massive afro unless you are of black origin.

Tell that to my milk white, heavily freckled sister who has a mass of ginger afro hair.
