To think the curly hair method is a con?

Axolotyls · 17/10/2025 12:17

I have frizzy bird nest hair. I straightened it for years but now I’m finding that I can’t be arsed as it’s so thin it just looks lank and depressing and makes me look old and haggered when it’s straight.

So I leave it to dry naturally - massive Afro

I tried curly hair method - Looked like a hair dresser had started styling it and then got pissed on tequila half way through

its a con isn’t it? Are some people just destined to have shit hair?

When I first read your post as I was casually scrolling down, I smiled as I assumed your comment was meant to be amusing and gently mocking of people who would take it seriously and literally.
But.......I think you are serious, aren't you? I have no connection whatsoever with @Axolotyls, but I would bet my life on believing the last thing she wanted was to be offensive.
Like it or not, describing hair as "Afro" has become a normal description of a type/style of hair, not an insult to people of black origin.
Your post actually feels quite "goady", and feeds on peoples' anxiety of being called out as racist when that is the very least of their intentions. I would welcome the views of any Mumsnetters of black origin on this issue.

It IS offensive

Girliefriendlikespuppies · 17/10/2025 22:37

I think it’s like anything, you take from it what’s useful.

For me that meant moving away from shampoo and conditioner with sulphites and silicone in them and using curly curl approved leave in conditioner and gel.

My hair looks better than it used to.

PersephoneParlormaid · 17/10/2025 12:27

It doesn’t work for me, I know my hair and there are 2 or 3 shampoos that work well, plus a certain curly shampoo and curl cream. That’s it.

Which ones????

Yes, thanks. Its frustrating that because someone doesn't believe it should be offensive, that it isn't. I tried to explain without being nasty. Maybe people haven't realised that it's not ok to say this.
It was also weird to assume I'm not black.

I AM a mumsnetter of black origin and this is my view. I am not being goady. It's a real thing.

@TreeCake Well, in that case, I've been educated and I sincerely apologise for my ignorance.

Grandmashorty · 17/10/2025 22:50

Not a con. My daughter and daughter in law have both used the curly girl method for the last couple of years. Both had nice wavy but slightly frizzy hair before. Have now got gorgeous very curly and non frizzy hair now.

Well I appreciate you coming back to say that. It honestly is a thing and even more so in the curly world, where I spend plenty of time on forums getting tips for my own curly hair.
I also don't believe for a minute that OP was being racist, but I do think it's important to increase awareness. ❤️

Probably not but if people don’t mention it then.. mentioning it means education

mamagogo1 · 17/10/2025 22:58

The trick is to wash as normal, use a leave in conditioner and then styling spray to perk it up as needed

inappropriateraspberry · 17/10/2025 23:12

My hair is wavy but too fine to do the curly girl method. I tried it and all the product just weighed my hair down and made it greasy. Nowadays I shampoo and condition with volumising products, then rinse my hair out upside down. Give it a few squishes with a towel (still upside down) and let it dry naturally. Sometimes I’ll pop a tiny bit of serum in the ends.

@TreeCake I didn’t realise the term was offensive and I’m glad you can see that it wasn’t my intention to cause offence. Thank you for explaining it, I won’t use that term again ☺️

There are different types of curly hair -
I'm around 3A!

https://flawlesshair.com/different-types-of-curls-curly-hair-type-guide/

Are you using the right methods, products and tools for yours?

Do not brush it when dry - only when full of conditioner.

When you've washed and conditioned it,
squeeze out water (I like a microfibre towel), add your curl cream, then leave it to dry naturally. And do not fiddle with it.

Leave it ALONE till it's dry, then shake it out briefly and leave it.

15 Different Types Of Curls – Curly Hair Type Guide

Curly hair comes in many shapes and patterns, each with unique needs. Here's a guide to 15 types of curls to help you understand yours.

It just looks like a ridiculous amount of work to me, so many steps, so many products!

I wash my hair in the shower and blast dry with a hair dryer with a bit of volumising spray. Ta-da! Takes about 10 minutes tops every 3 days. I cba with spending hours and hours on my appearance.

The curly girl method originally was very simple, with few products, but somehow it's been hijacked and now seems to require numerous products and lots of time.

I just stick with the original method.

Some of it doesn’t work for me
my hair wants protein and hard hold, never deep conditioning as it’s very fine and soft
I switched to the CurlMaven method and had way more success

basically I use a clarifying shampoo regularly and sulphates, a protein rich conditioner and then hard hold gel and mousse or just gel, and sometimes hairspray

Ah - now that looks like mine (or at least like mine ought to look if I could get it to behave).

Are there specifc products you'd recommend? Particularly, which conditioner do you use?

BlueEyedBogWitch · 18/10/2025 02:46

Have you thought about a really short pixie cut?

My hair is a pain in the arse, and so I’ve had a really short cut for the last few years. My life became easier overnight!

Aldi volume conditioner! It’s light and decent amounts of protein plus no silicone

just lurking here…

I generally agree that people are walking on egghshells in society sometimes, but tbh it was unintentionally offensive. Using ‘Afro’ as a descriptor or messy or unruly hair can be upsetting, and is quite dated.

So thank you for taking it on board in your later post. I have type 3 hair but my DD is type 4 and it’s important that we don’t see Afro hair as bad or worthy of mocking.

doggybootcamp · 18/10/2025 08:07

It takes a while for it to work/ probably about 6 months after stopping straightening for me to get consistently good hair. The wavy hair method on Facebook helped- I don’t follow it exactly but it was a good starting point.

Cherrysoup · 18/10/2025 08:17

Mine is spiral curls. I’ve tried every product going over the years. I’m currently on Lee Stafford curly conditioner. I find not washing much and brushing product into wet hair then letting it dry naturally is easiest and retains the curl all day.

I wonder if straightening it so much has changed it? I recently straightened mine and it was a disaster, maybe menopause has changed mine, don’t know. Selenium is apparently helpful, I mainline Brazil nuts.

Nightjar2000 · 18/10/2025 08:19

Curly girl method has made my frizzy hair so much curlier - but it is a lot of work and time consuming..!

Ionacat · 18/10/2025 08:21

I didn’t get on with the curly girl method, my hair just felt horrible. I’ve got very thick now fairly long hair which as I’ve grown it has gone into a tighter and tigher curl so I often have ringlets. I’ve experimented and I now stick to:
I use Aussie Moist shampoo and conditioner
A mix of Cantu leave in conditioner and curl cream
Then quickly twist the curls in largish strands. Quick diffuse or my preferred method car blowers on the way to work.
Day 2 I swear by the Cantu curl reviver, spray and retwist the curls and good to go.
Day 3 - if I can’t be bothered to wash, tie it up into a messy bun!

Hair is cut by a fantastic hairdresser who I’ve had for years and understands my hair and how it bounces.

I used to like the Redkin curvaceous ringlet, but they discontinued it and I don’t think it would now be strong enough for my hair.

Janus · 18/10/2025 09:07

Do you follow Nuala Morley on instagram? She is a bit of a guru and has talks about styling a lot and what products to use.

I use a curl cream and then a gel. She will show you how to rake/apply both and the best advice I have taken on board is whatever products you use it has to be on soaking wet hair. If you squeeze water/towel dry a bit you will always get frizz. So I put everything on as soon as I get out of the shower and then dry myself, get dressed, do my make up. My hair is only shoulder length so I prefer to let it dry naturally. A hair bonnet is also a good idea but usually I can’t be bothered!

Go and watch a few videos by Nuala!

ThankGodItsAutumn · 18/10/2025 09:32

My hair is probably more very wavy than actually curly but I find FrizzEase Curl Cream applied when towel dry and again when fully dry works really well. I just scrunch it through and leave it.
