To pull up my dentist on this?

I have a neurological condition where my teeth will hurt and feel sensitive to the point I have ended up in A&E, I also have a central nervous system condition that amplifies my pain.

Anyway. I had a check up booked at my dentist mid Nov. They emailed to tell m it had been cancelled for unforseen reasons. I called to rebook and was told I could not be seen until January, so I booked it.

Now because of my conditions, I cannot diferrentiate between real dental problems and "brain" pain. I need a dentist to make sure I have no real problems. I went on their website and if I was to book a "smile consultation" as a NEW patient, I could be seen by my dentist in Dec.

I'm tempted to email and ask if as an existing patient, can I not have one of those appts in Dec for my check up?
I might not be in pain (hugely) now, but to know my teeth are okay before Xmas would help me a lot.

Are you a NHS patient? If so a percentage of appointments will be available for NHS work and a percentage for private as , in most practices, private work subsidises the NHS side .

There is no leeway to book NHS appointments into private slots .

declutteringmymind · 16/10/2025 21:00

perhaps you can call and ask if they operate a cancellation list?

RhubarbandCustardYummyYummy · 16/10/2025 21:07

The business needs to operate and they need money to do that.

This, the appt is there, but you'd need to pay.
Are there other private businesses you want to 'pull up'?

HedwigEliza · 16/10/2025 21:23

Why the aggressive language? ‘Pull my dentist up’ - speaking as a dental nurse, yes, you’re being extremely unreasonable 🙄

No I’m a private patient. Only been there a year and spent thousands just on keeping the remaining 18 teeth I have.

I just feel like it’s unreasonable to put back my appointment initially before then cancelling it entirely to be told it’s over another 2 months before I can be seen.

This is private, not NHS.

I appreciate that but at the cost of current clients who also pay?

You can ask but don't "pull them up" for an obvious business decision - it's an attempt to attract new clients by using the attraction of a fairly soon appointment

thisishowloween · 18/10/2025 16:34

You could just ring, ask and be polite? No need to "pull anyone up" about it.

Oucht · 18/10/2025 17:14

I didn’t use the correct terminology. Should I calmly discuss with them and ask why would be a better way of putting it.

Having been failed severely by medical professionals leaves me a bit angry when I actually need an appointment and mine is taken away.

Everyone saying they will “pull people up”. Perhaps it makes them feel more powerful.

BriefEncountersOfTheThirdKind · 18/10/2025 17:17

It wasn't "taken away" - for whatever reason, and it could be legit like the dentist needs surgery themselves or the practise will be closed for essential maintenance, they have to cancel your appointment and the next available time for your particular position is January

A smile consultation is probably with an orthodontist. Not necessarily with the dentist.

Is it trigeminal neuralgia? I suffer with it too and there are some tells for me. If its the TN, it's like a switch. It stops as suddenly as it starts and doesn't ease off slowly. If it's worse lying down, it's almost always dental. If unsure, take a tramadol. If it stops, it's probably dental.

The cosmetic consult was with my dentist. I could book online and choose him. He is the owner and top dentist there.

I have atypical facial pain that affects my teeth. It was thought trigeminal neuralgia but I do not get the stabbing pain. It’s all in my teeth hence 12 were removed at my previous dentist.

i also have central sensitisation so any pain I have is amplified.
Im on tramadol, gabapentin, amitriptyline and Lamotrigine and Mirabegron.

I have endometriosis, interstitial cystitis, large ovarian cysts, afp, cs, spinal stenosis and ridiculopathy.

When you have a lot of chronic conditions and you’re in pain, I’m sure you can understand the upset and slight annoyance at the delay and the fact there are other slots for other things with the same person that are not yet filled.

But those slots are "booked out" for other clients...

CryMyEyesViolet · 18/10/2025 18:02

Honestly, just find another dentist.

gamerchick · 18/10/2025 18:07

Tbh, I think in your position I'd just get them all out and spend the money on teeth that won't cause pain OP.

If your re private, you have the luxury of shopping around. Just find somewhere else.

RhubarbandCustardYummyYummy · 18/10/2025 18:21

If you’re private just move somewhere else with better availability

recreatingthephoto · 18/10/2025 18:49

Just call them up and explain to the receptionist your anxiety and issues that you help and ask to move your appointment forward. I think they would be understanding. If they say they don’t have space to bring forward, request to be placed on a cancellation list. I would continue to call them each week and hopefully they will be able to help you. If you have genuine pain, you can request an emergency appointment.

I have what you have + other conditions and I strongly advise asking your GP about Transdermal patches, they are life changing! They’re 10x stronger than morphine but slow release, they last multiple days at a time and are AMAZING! They just ‘remove’ the pain like bloody magic! You can still drive, you don’t feel like you’re ‘on’ anything either.
