Why are things so hard to log into these days? Just

Just tried to log into my NHS account to make an appointment for DS. Need photo ID and a recording of my face or a load of details about my GP. The last time I logged on I didn't need any of this nonsense. They've got my details! My photo ID is a passport from 2016, the last time I used it for ID I got funny looks because I've aged a bit since then, so it probably won't match anyway. If I phone up I'll get told to do it online.

Tried to log into O2 the other week and it took forever because I needed to re- register now they've taken over Virgin Media. Took about ten minutes to get through to top up my phone whereas before it took about two.

Everything needs multiple steps these days and it drives me up the wall. Yahoo! is still easy to sign into though!

But I don't understand why more organisations don't realise it

Two of my clients have spent the summer dithering about whether or not they need an app for their services. Fortunately, they are coming down on the side of not needing them. But this is more likely for small businesses.

Interestingly, they both said that the organisations trying to flog apps to them don't see where the shortfalls are. I would like to think that the sales team would feed that back to technical staff but I think we've hit the point where technical staff actually don't know how the product gets used in reality.

if the right software was tailored for them, I can see how one of them would find it useful.

If you are using the NFC feature on your phone, you don't need connectivity. Your phone is basically a copy of your card.

You may need connectivity to receive a 2FA code by push notification from your provider - but then that can use wifi and doesn't need the cellular network (which SMS would need).

What the heck is NFC? 🙈

This post is interesting for me.
A few weeks ago I wrote a post saying that doing things online often took too long, giving as an example buying train tickets. I didn’t specify the issue, that the SE app had introduced Advance tickets and made them the default. Both my friend and I were struggling to buy returns which were not Advance.
Of course, my username advertises my age and I was pretty syrprised by the quantity of lecturing and patronising responses, eg ‘my 94 year old Mother can manage the Internet and so should you’; ‘funny you managed to post this but can’t managed to buy a ticket online.’ At that point the thread was withdrawn.
The responses I have read on this thread have all been respectful and rational.
I wonder whether they would have been as sensible if I had posted them using my username? 🤔

Why so rude You go in, you say what the legal position is and get them to comply. They know damn well what the law says, they just think the patients are too stupid to know. Once they realise you know, they back down.
