AIBU to keep this dress? A Vinted one

Bought a dress a few weeks ago off of Vinted. Looking back, there were issues with the transaction from the start - seller totally ignored all messages and waited until the last minute possible to send. When the package finally did arrive I gave the dress a very quick look over and clicked ‘everything is ok’, by this point it had been sitting at the post office for a few days and the seller was pestering me to pick it up and get the sale completed.

She waited until I had clicked ‘everything is ok’ to inform me that she potentially had sent the wrong dress. I went back for a second look and she was indeed right - it was a very similar dress (same colour, size material and style) however the one she had accidentally sent was thrice the price of what I had bought.. (RRP £50 vs RRP £150)

Seller immediately began pestering me to send the dress back. I told her that the sale was complete by that point and therefore there was nothing that could be done. She became increasingly persistent and suggested swapping bank details and addresses so that a courier should be arranged - again I told her no, I would not be swapping bank details with a stranger over DM, especially since this is against Vinted rules. She then wanted me to relist it on my own page so that she could buy it back - by this point she was obsessively texting me multiple times a day, becoming increasingly agitated + rude. Due to her manner, I didn’t want to go out of my way to help her out + go through the inconvenience of packaging, listing, posting etc so again I told her no, I would be keeping the dress. I informed her that she should be more careful with what she sends next time and left it at that..

She has since attempted to report me, left me multiple bitchy messages and a 1 star review calling me a money grabber amongst many other things🤣 I blocked her and a woman who seems to be her sister (same surname and location) has followed me to keep an eye.. Ridiculous behaviour from grown women!

Am I really being so unreasonable to keep the dress?

If a retailer sends you something by accident then you are required to return it by law, otherwise it’s classed as theft. I’m not really sure about Vinted though, maybe sellers sign their rights away in the terms and conditions.

I have twice been sent the wrong item on eBay and returned them. In both cases the seller had mixed up the QR codes when printing the labels, which I think it fairly easy to do. In one case I forwarded the item to the correct buyer!

lemondropsandchimneytops · 14/10/2025 22:27

This has scam written all over it.

The transaction is complete according to Vinted's policies. Tough luck for her.

awakeandasleep · 14/10/2025 22:27

I had this happen. It was very odd. When i declined to give my bank details they wanted to get a courier to intercept the delivery it was very odd with numerous messages.

I wonder if it’s a scam to get op’s bank details. Too much of a coincidence that there were 2 similar dresses at different prices and the mistake was noticed right after the package was accepted.

Not a very clever scam. Surely she would’ve sent OP a much cheaper dress to encourage her to want to return it?!

I highly doubt that this is true considering that any time Amazon have sent me the wrong item they simply apologise, let me keep it and suggest giving it to charity.

How is it a scam? What would be in it for the seller?

She gets the buyer to send it back, saying she’ll refund when it arrives, then doesn’t send the refund….

CinnamonJellyBeans · 14/10/2025 22:33

People make mistakes. I've been sent the wrong stuff twice and sent it back. It wouldn't occur to me to keep something that doesn't belong to me, although it was inconvenient to post it back and then re-buy my items.

So you think this woman is Jeff Bezos and give you stuff for free because she cannot force you to give her back her stuff.

In that case.. do you think I am an Amazon packaging facility? Why would I go out of my way to relist, repackage and send an item for someone that didn’t even have the common courtesy to send me a basic message or forewarning before it was too late to easily sort through Vinted?

Tough one. Frankly I don’t like the idea of giving anyone on Vinted my personal details (much less off the app) so I can definitely see where you’re coming from and her being bitchy about it doesn’t help.

However… if you could see it was a legitimate mistake, there’d be no harm in just relisting and posting it back to her.

You are not understanding. Of course, if the retailer tells you that you can keep the item, then you can keep it. However, you are required to inform them of the mistake, twice, in writing, and return it if requested. Otherwise it is classed as theft and a criminal offence.

In this case, a return has clearly been requested. However, as I said, I don’t know whether Vinted have something in their terms and conditions which would affect the sellers rights to a return in this situation.

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 14/10/2025 22:43

VintedStrugg · 14/10/2025 21:38

I would’ve quite happily sent it back and gone through the regular Vinted return mechanisms had she made me aware before I clicked ‘everything is ok’ - it was the fact that she seemed to know yet waited an entire week until it was too late (and is now painting herself as the victim) that really bothers me!

Yeah that’s why I think it’s a scam - that she kept nagging you to collect it and said nothing til you’d clicked “everything is ok”.

Although it’s a rubbish scam as you are quite within your rights to do as you are doing!

If it’s not a scam, it’s her fault as she’s sent the dress you ordered to someone who paid more, so she’s now in trouble with vinted. This might be why she’s getting her knickers in a twist about it (if not a scam).

It’s on the seller to make sure they send the correct item to the correct person - even I can manage it and my executive functioning is awful.

PrivateMusic · 14/10/2025 22:45

Bobiverse · 14/10/2025 21:06

How are the basically the same dress? I don’t believe you didn’t realise it was the wrong dress.

However, she sent it and you’re under no obligation to return it. I guess she could report to the police as you’re not meant to profit from someone else’s error (like if someone sends money to your bank account by mistake) but I highly doubt this would actually be considered a crime. So, keep it! Unless you care about karma.

How did the seller not realise sooner?

Sounds like a scam to me.

typicaltuesdaynight · 14/10/2025 22:45

Block her . I had to block a buyer for item was listed spares/ repairs as it didn’t work. He received it the tried open a case that it didn’t work! She made a mistake not your issue

idri · 14/10/2025 22:50

Did she have a good rating on Vinted?

Maybe it was a genuine mistake?

Bizarrely, the dress that she accidentally sent is still listed for sale on her page. It’s not as if she has a buyer waiting (which I would’ve had more sympathy for)

Considering the nature of the seller I’m not about to directly expose myself on MN, so no.

cheeseismydownfall · 14/10/2025 23:04

Classic scam.

Once you've accepted the item, the buyer protection effectively ceases and the funds are released to the buyer. She was hoping to pressure you to return the dress outside of the Vinted platform, leaving her with both the payment and the dress and leaving the OP with nothing.

(I've had a buyer send me an item by mistake. She let me know before I'd taken receipt because she'd muddled the parcels up at the post office and her other buyer had alerted her to to the problem. She was super apologetic and it was obviously sincere, and because I hadn't accepted it it was reasonably easy to sort out via the platform.

So it does happen.)

onlymethen · 14/10/2025 23:37

I bought joggers listed as BNWIthout Tags
on Vinted only £5.00 but they were so badly stained I wouldn’t even wear them gardening. Refused and sent them back but the lister had hundreds of sells so made me think is that a scam as most people wouldn’t ask for a refund for £5.00.

It definitely sounds like a scam. Waiting for it to be too late to go though the vinted standard returns way, then trying to get bank details, then the offer of a courier (which is a well known scam used on Facebook market place)

The harm of OP resisting the item for her to buy back is that we already know the seller has a cheaper identical dress. So she would be well equipt for item not as described, thats if she even admits it is returned in the 1st place.

She sounds dodgy, I would have nothing further to do with this woman. Block all contacts she throws your way

She wanted OP to start a transaction outside Vinted . I don’t know exactly what the scam would be but the circumstances are hard to believe. Almost identical dresses with very different prices and the seller only realised the mistake as soon as the item was accepted.

I'm really confused about why she did that.
I sent the wrong parcel once (was sending a few things) and the buyer let me know straight away, I sent her a label to send it on to the correct buyer and bought a new label to send her item. I think we made sure we picked the same shop to drop off/pick up!
