To want a swim cap that keeps hair dry?

EmmaHarte · 14/10/2025 18:28

Can anyone help? I like to swim, I wear a Zoggs tight fitting cap - other brands are available, but they seem much of a muchness. I do a nice sedate breaststroke and don’t swim underwater. But every time my (shortish) hair is dripping afterwards. I don’t want to have to keep washing and styling it! Anybody found the Holy Grail of swimming caps or solutions? Thank you! (Btw I have read that swimming caps are not meant to keep your hair dry but surely someone must have come up with something?!!! Is it really that difficult?)

No hat designed for swimming will keep your hair dry. However the aqua aerobic ladies in my pool often wear shower caps, with a big old fashioned swim hat. Might be worth a go.

My DS wears a silicone one (Speedo or Arena I think) and it keeps his hair completely dry.

Very uncomfortable to get it on and off though.

cornbunting · 14/10/2025 18:39

With kindness, OP, if you want to go swimming you're going to get wet. If you want dry hair maybe consider a different form of exercise (although then you still get sweaty and need a wash so it still doesn't work).

Bjorkdidit · 14/10/2025 19:17

Even if a hat kept your hair dry, which isn't what its for, you'll still have hat hair, so it will need styling unless you're happy for it to look all squashed.

Perhaps tie it back or wear a decorative scarf or buff if you don't want the bother of styling it after swimming?

Leadonmacduffs · 14/10/2025 19:17

Never found one!

EmmaHarte · 14/10/2025 21:00

Thank you @MissScarletInTheBallroom - does your son have short hair? Mine is shortish but a shoulder length bob. I think my cap is silicone and I have even tried wearing two (was suggested but doesn’t work). I don’t mind having hat hair as I can soon sort that - it’s not the styling that bothers me. And thanks @Bjorkdidit but I can’t/don’t want to wear a scarf to work. And I really don’t mind getting wet @cornbunting But honestly I think in this day and age surely it’s not beyond someone to come up with a swim cap that keeps hair dry! 🤷‍♀️

None of my hats keep my hair dry (I prefer a PU coated lap cap or the Swim Secure bubble silicone), but I've seen the Hairbrella swim cap advertised and the reviews look good for it keeping your hair dry and its satin lined so allegedly doesn't snag or frizz. No idea if this is true though

BessieSurtees · 14/10/2025 21:08

I wear silicone I don’t think a hat exists that will keep hair dry as water seeps in everywhere. I don’t know how people keep their hair dry on a proper swim, how often do you swim? You should always wet your hair first because dry hair soaks up the chemicals even with a hat on.

hair in pineapple on top of head then double swim cap works for me. As in two one on top of the other. Yes I look special. Still gets a bit wet at the nape of my neck but I can get away with it. Have very thick wavy hair.

BessieSurtees · 14/10/2025 21:12

@cestlavielifethat has great reviews I’ve never heard of them before

DaffodilTuesday · 16/10/2025 07:27

I have ordered the hairbrella one after reading this thread, so hopefully I will remember to report back!

My complaint so far was the amount of spam email i got from doing their spin the wheel to get something off thing - honestly way too many. You can click unsubscribe - I did not initially see this as it is in small writing at the bottom of long emails, and STOP to the texts.
On the plus side, their customer service person responded really promptly to explain that and they are a small, women-owned business (as I learned from one marketing email).
The postage is quite a lot for the UK as they are shipping from the US but i think that‘s par for the course (the cheapest option is £10.40 or thereabouts).

Anyway, I will update. I swim three or four times a week and I would like highlights done so I need something which works!

laurini · 16/10/2025 07:39

Ugh I would like a solution to this too

indoorplantqueen · 16/10/2025 08:14

My dd is a swimmer and gone through at least 20 caps and none of them keep her hair wet. It’s harder for girls with long hair.

EmmaHarte · 16/10/2025 11:59

Definitely report back @DaffodilTuesday I’m glad I’m not the only one. I would swim more if I didn’t have to keep washing my hair! It’s just too much, potentially washing and styling every day! Sometimes twice a day if for instance I’ve already had to wash it earlier (I do another hobby which means my hair gets v sweaty and has to be washed before work). Then if I swim after work - another bloomin’ wash! Oh, for a cap that keeps my hair dry!

okay, so the Hairbrella swim cap has arrived.
I fear there is no way to wear this without looking ridiculous. I also think it would work better with longer hair because the illustration in the instructions tell you to pull the hair back in a pony tail as the first step. So this may be a problem.

conceptually it is interesting, and I will try it out when I go swimming at a point when the pool is quiet, very very quiet.

This is something of an expensive experiment as I do not have high hopes.

Swim caps aren’t designed to keep hair dry. They’re designed to keep hair out of eyes and to keep hair out of pool filters and breaking them. If you’re doing sedate head-up breaststroke and it’s still getting wet with caps on then that’s the best it’s going to get.

I swim freestyle & underwater breaststroke several times a week. My hair gets soaked (tied up with silicone swim cap on) but that’s just part of it. I shower the moment I get out of the pool, using an anti-chlorine shampoo, and comb it and let it air dry whilst I travel to work or home. Some pools have hair-dryers and I see many women giving their hair a quick blow dry and then heading off to work.

There really isn’t any way of keeping hair dry when in a water-based sport. If getting it wet is a deal-breaker you’d sadly need to change sport I’m afraid.

Thisis the holy grail for me. I love swimming and would swim every day if I could keep my hair dry. I have a thick chin length bob and hate silicone caps. Am going to order an Hairbrella though.

Jaxhog · 06/04/2026 11:05

My hairdresser recommended covering your hair with conditioner under a silicone cap. It doesn't keep it dry, but prevents chlorine damage. Wash it out when you shower and your hair is beautifully shiny. Works for me anyway.

I’ve been wearing this

I don’t care about looking ridiculous. In fact I feel quite glam in it, reminds me of the floral hats Elizabeth Taylor used to wear. Doesn’t keep my hair fully dry but I spend a lot on salon colouring and it keeps the chemicals at bay.

WinterNightStars · 06/04/2026 11:57

ive always found Speedo ones best tho still doesn’t keep completely dry.

hmm, it’s not even made it to the pool yet. My head is basically too big I think and my daughter agreed that there is no way I can possibly be seen anywhere with it on. I was actually considering coming back on this thread and offering to send it to anyone who wished to actually do the experiment.

I was considering buying a different one as my hair is getting ever more dried out - I have been looking at Simply Swim. Edited to add - a bit like the one KimberleyClark linked to but fewer flowers. It would be good to know how the sizing is.
