How much would you be willing to spend for a week away in Dec?

Dh and I are planning a week away with our very close friends and family for DH’s 40th in Dec. We will find a nice holiday let. For a week how much would you expect to pay for a holiday home/air BnB?

We are comfortable professionals, not gazillionaires but can afford to treat ourselves here and there?

Dh and I are miles apart

It really depends on how big the property is and where you want it to be?

I would suggest about £3,000 even if it is the UK in December.

Adooree · 14/10/2025 11:55

Is that away for actual Christmas or maybe just the 2 weeks leading up to it 1-14th Dec ?
I think it will make a big difference to your answer . Also the area , facilities you require etc .

Dh and I will be paying. We need 4 bedrooms.

Assuming you are paying for the 2 of you and it’s not over the Christmas -800?

id you are paying for a full place for a family well it depends how many

edit - 4 bedroooms 1600

second edit to say things have got more expensive over the last couple of years - one of you may be out of date

LoveWine123 · 14/10/2025 11:58

Surely you just look at Air B&B and similar sites that rent out largish houses during the holidays and see how much they cost? It doesn’t matter what we would expect to pay if it’s not matching the reality of rental prices around the holiday period for the type of property you need.

ToffeePennie · 14/10/2025 12:00

I am paying £900 for a Welsh caravan holiday for 15 days in December over Christmas and new year.

That’s obviously what I am doing but dh and I are miles away on what we think is reasonable to spend. I’m curious if I’m the one who is being unreasonable

Why are you asking me? Am I invited?

purplecorkheart · 14/10/2025 12:04

To be fair you are asking us how long is a piece of string. We have no idea the area you are looking at. You could be talking about a remote cottage or a house in a City with a Christmas Market. Why not look up the prices in the area you want and then work out what you are willing to spend.

MidnightPatrol · 14/10/2025 12:04

I am renting a nice house to sleep 8 on Airbnb in a nice part of Southern England in November for £2,000 for three nights in November.

If that provides any context.

£250 for three nights per person / £500 per couple seems pretty good value - given the price of hotels.

catlovingdoctor · 14/10/2025 12:09

You can get a week in the Middle East, including flights for a little over a grand depending when in December you go x

mugglewump · 14/10/2025 12:09

We have booked a week's holiday in St Kitts for the four of us (DH + 2 adult DC) for £850 pp, out late Nov, back early Dec. Seems crazy people are suggesting £4k for a UK AirBNB when you could actually do something so much more special for less.

Adooree · 14/10/2025 12:12

Just did a generic search for Lake District , Keswick area , first 2 weeks of December , 7 nights prices range £850 - £2, 800 ish depending on size / facilities etc .

Can you share your expectations of the property? Do you want a lodge, a caravan, a large state of the art house, glamping? Even these will vary in price depending on whether you are looking at the centre of Bath vs an isolated part in the Lake District for example. It’s all very subjective based on area and personal expectations. If it helps, we went to Wales last year and rented a big house, it was approx. £850 per family for the week.

Lobas · 14/10/2025 12:35

Sorry my last post comes across a bit rude. I didn’t mean for it to be so.

We are looking for a very comfortable space that will accommodate 8 adults. We plan to enjoy pub nights, meals out, games, walks etc. I enjoy cooking nice meals

R0ckandHardPlace · 14/10/2025 13:02

I’d be looking at around £1200. Obviously you could pay a lot more for something really posh but you could find something really nice for that price in Wales (which is generally cheaper than Cornwall or the Lakes).

SunnyUpNorth · 14/10/2025 13:09

we have a holiday let in the lakes that sleeps 8, I just checked and for a week in early Dec it’s £885.

i think it totally depends on your budget. You could find places for a lot more and some places for less. Things like a hot tub will bump up the price.

Morrisdancer403010 · 14/10/2025 13:10

More context required. Where is it? A 4 bed holiday let in Barbados would cost more than a 4 bed holiday let in Bognor 🤣

mindutopia · 14/10/2025 13:16

This isn’t personally an expense I’d be looking to take on right before Christmas. So I would say zero.

But realistically, I think you are looking at anything from £800 to £2000 depending on the sort of property you are after.

I’m on the Devon/Cornwall border and the holiday let next to us (detached cottage, 3 bedrooms but has a private woodland and an orchard with access to walking and 2 pubs) is about £650 a week. Otherwise locally, I’d expect to pay £150-180 a night, so a little over £1000 for the week. If you want something more posh than just a normal house, it would be closer to £200-250 a night.

Bulbsbulbsbulbs · 14/10/2025 13:24

For a really nice property I'd probably pay £2000 for a week. But you could get something for half that. I'm thinking Cornwall as that's where I am.

TakeMe2Insanity · 14/10/2025 13:56

It’s Christmas it will cost more

If its about other people agreeing, I’d do a budget, medium and splurge costing. Remember its your dh’s birthday not theirs so spending might not be on the same scale.

FcukBreastCancer · 14/10/2025 14:00

£1500 ish for something nice, not over Christmas.

LandSharksAnonymous · 14/10/2025 14:11

Eight adults? Reasonably nice? Assuming that's four bedrooms...and you want decent facilities (not old cabinets, a washing machine that barely works). Okay...
it still massively depends on where you go and what you consider to be 'nice'

Lots of people are happy with, being honest, properties that are not even as nice as their home when they go on holiday. Me? If I'm on holiday in the UK I want state of the art. I don't get staying somewhere - when you're meant to relax - that isn't as nice as your own home! Why!?

FWIW, my second home is a holiday let. It's £2.2K for the first week of December and sleeps eight. North Norfolk Coast. There's a similar sized property in the same road with the same holiday cottage company as mine. It's up for £600 a week less - but it's nowhere near as nice.

Bottlefall · 14/10/2025 14:15

Tbh, I'd work the other way. Decide where we want to go and find out what it costs to gat the kind of standard accomodation we want, that's available for the peak week.

Then think about if we're prepared to pay it. Cost varies so much depending on location and dates.

If it was a difficult decision because finances are tight, I wouldn't want to go at all.
