Tips for removers

Moving home soon.
i checked on line and it’s saying you need to tip each removal person 50 quid per day each.

they are packing so it’s 4 people for 5 days for various reasons.

so that’s a 1000.!

what would you tip in the south east?

yabu- pay it
yanbu- that’s far to much! Payless.

I don't tip people like this.

We live in the uk, they are paid a wage and they are often independent companies, they've priced the service so that's what i pay.

DeltaAlphaDelta79 · 13/10/2025 15:42

We are in the south east. We had removers for one day and tipped them £20 each. I dont generally agree with tipping, but it seemed the right thing to do, although I absolutely begrudged it when I realised that they had done a rush job and damaged a few items. I reported the damage to their company but nothing came of it. It was fairly low level stuff caused by them rushing so if they had taken more care it would have been ok.

Peridoteage · 13/10/2025 15:44

Its like hairdressers i do not get why you would tip a hairdresser, they have set the price for the cut or colour or whatever, so they should be happy to receive that price

Tipping culture arises more in countries where the wage itself is very very low or non existent, and the tip is the main/only remuneration for the service provided.

GasPanic · 13/10/2025 15:47

What do you mean by "tip" ? Extra in addition to what they are getting paid anyway or they are doing it for you as a favour and the "tip" is actually their main compensation for something you don't want to do yourself ?

I didn't think anyone normally tips removal people. They get a price to conduct the entire job and they pay it.

Pemba · 13/10/2025 16:15

Yes a lot of people do tip them, on top of the agreed fee that goes to the company. They're probably just working for the removals company and probably don't get paid much.

Not sure if would tip a sole trader though.

YourPeppyAmberTraybake · 13/10/2025 16:22

I moved 12 years ago and gave the boss £20 in front of the two other men and said this is for a beer each.

That’s a lot of packing, my 5 bedroom house was packed in 4 hours!

Nourishinghandcream · 13/10/2025 16:41

Moved twice in recent years and didn't tip either time.
Second time there were nine (I think?) of them so tipping them separately would have cost a significant amount over and above the cost of removals.

Tipping is not a thing in the UK.

LinaLouLa · 13/10/2025 20:39

I wouldn't tip. The removal company charges their fee. When we moved i bought them all lunch on moving day. But they damaged a couple of furniture items and blocked our toilet!! So I am glad I only paid for lunch!

GotMarriedInCornwall · 13/10/2025 20:42

I probably wouldn’t tip, but if you have a nearby cafe I’m sure a round of coffee and bacon sandwiches (or similar) would probably be appreciated.

Birch101 · 13/10/2025 20:47

Why would you tip, a good review fair enough offer drinks? Or as pp a lunch round to be very nice. It's a job they have quoted accordingly

DominosForDinner · 13/10/2025 20:51

Our removal team worked like slaves. My dh gave the crew £60 at the end.

During the packing day I kept the sugary teas and coffees coming; I also had a big cooler of soft drinks (the tea and coffee was more popular) and a big box of Mars Bars, Twix, Yorkies etc. which I let them take at the end and yes we bought them some rounds of bacon butties for lunch .

It is incredibly hard physical labour and often the crews are booked back to back on jobs (sometimes with a long drive back late at night).

Mischance · 13/10/2025 20:53

I gave them a tenner each because they helped put up beds etc in a very efficient way.

DaisyChain505 · 13/10/2025 20:54

Why do people feel they need to tip certain professions and not others.

People are paid a proper wage for their jobs in this country.

we don’t need to tip.

Willowback · 13/10/2025 20:56

We didn't tip the movers but we gave them the broken fancy fridge the sellers had left they were a bit a@@ey and they asked for it, we never told them it was broken. They were the worst movers ever!

Ireallywantadoughnut36 · 13/10/2025 20:59

I think we gave 50 quid, maybe 100 to the lead guy and said "please split this and thank the team".... I don't think it would be expected, they are paid and honestly, a couple of ours weren't that great and they packed the cot on day 1 (after we'd said Leave the beds as we need to sleep in them tonight), apparently they didn't view a cot as a bed.... I digress, tip whatever you feel is fair, if they've gone above and beyond, if something is difficult or if you want to be nice, but don't feel obligated and definitely not 4 figures!!

hipposcanweartutus · 13/10/2025 20:59

we used a local company and tipped the guys £20 each. They did a fabulous job in really hot weather!

This

i'd give them plenty of brews and biscuits and a nice breakfast somewhere at the end of the job

£50 a person per day is just silly

Turnerskies · 13/10/2025 21:09

I'm in the south east. My removers were fast, efficient and helpful. The supervisor told me the men were on minimum wage, so the company did well but not the workers. I gave the supervisor £100 to share out.

Biggles27 · 13/10/2025 22:01

I’d give them £20 each! In total. We tipped our bathroom fitter £100 for five weeks work and he seemed delighted with that. He was supplied decent coffee, bottled water and M&S choccie biscuits, hob nobs, Mcvities digestives and real rich tea (we eat own brand lol) plus I bought him several Greggs lunches and a couple of Big Mac meals

just keep them well watered!

Reallyneedsaholiday · 14/10/2025 09:10

Assuming that you’re in the UK, I wouldn’t worry too much, but I found this.

that’s what I found and thought wow that’s a lot!!!!

i gave our movers £20 each and a case of beer that we bought for Christmas and didn’t use. They seemed happy with that.

PorridgeAndSyrup · 14/10/2025 16:39

Don’t put too much trust in AI, and remember a lot of advice and guidelines you find online are based on US culture, not UK (even if the AI summary has put a pound sign in).

Cantseetreesforthewood · 14/10/2025 16:53

Well, we're clearly very mean! We didn't tip cash at all, but did keep them well supplied with food and drinks. And I sent the kids to tesco for ice-cream for everyone, as it was boiling.

OperationalSupport · 15/10/2025 14:28

We had a recent 3-day pack and move with 4 movers.

We tipped £100 to share at the end of the job and we’d bought them fish & chips on the actual move day.
