To think this is really creepy and weird?

We have recently moved into a bungalow in a new area so don’t know the delivery people yet.

Was due a DPD parcel today and was putting my daughter down to sleep when he knocked.

I figured he would leave it on the front door step (we have a drive so it’s not out on the road), or by the back gate where the bins are. Plenty of covered spaces/area.

Instead, he has opened my new back gate by reaching over to unlock it as it was fully locked. Come into the garden, round to the whole other side of the bungalow where we have a utility room lean to that attaches to the kitchen. The door to this is broken/always open and he’s just placed it in the doorway there.

There are many, many other places he could’ve left it (it’s a very safe area) and I feel like it’s a complete invasion of privacy (especially as he could have just walked into my kitchen without me knowing).

I just feel so creeped out that he’s been walking around whilst I’m in my daughters bedroom.

Maybe I’m just overthinking and happy to be told I’m BU, but I’ve never had a delivery person unlock gates etc before!

And?

nomas · 13/10/2025 14:59

S/he was trying to save your parcel from being stolen.

Do you have clear instructions on where to leave your parcel?

The couriers come into my back garden too.

ohyesido · 13/10/2025 15:02

Your delivery driver placed your package in a safe place for you to find it.

he didn’t disturb or impose on you.

he didn’t throw it over the wall or leave it in the recycling bin on collection day

what is the problem?

Hithismyname · 13/10/2025 15:15

I'd say it's fine. He didn't want your parcel to be stolen as many are. I wouldn't think too much about it.

MyDeftDuck · 13/10/2025 15:16

Well, time to put a sign on the front door advising delivery personnel where you want them to leave packages then. They aren’t psychic and seems like he was using his initiative. Perhaps he’d delivered to the previous occupier and that’s where they wanted their parcels left. Don’t get in sweat and be precious about a broken door.

Electricrhubarb · 13/10/2025 15:17

I also live in a quiet and safe area and the post man sometimes opens the front door and leaves the parcel on the floor. It can make me jump but I don't mind.

Okay I can see I’m in the wrong here! Just never had it happen before. There’s various places he could’ve left it before he got to the door, that’s what I found so weird. And the lock is hard to reach so he’s climbed up to be able to reach it unless he’s about 7ft!

Lesson learnt :)

Whilst I'm generally on the side of the courier as they can't do right for doing wrong most times, I'm actually unsure how I feel about this . I get people have a go if they leave it at the front door for everyone to see but I don't like the thought of them actually unlocking doors/gates. I kind of think you're not wrong to feel a little creeped out as it is a stranger to you - but I guess on the plus side, you've seen what precautions you need to take with your house and may be it will entice you to get these things fixed quick smart. Be safe OP x

GAJLY · 13/10/2025 15:25

At least you know your house isn't secure, sort it out!

DrierThanANunsNasty · 13/10/2025 13:27

Can you tell me why @DitzyDerbyBabe86? genuinely! I’ve never had this before so if it’s the done thing then fine, but normally if a gate is locked that means don’t enter right?!

How did he open the gate if it was locked?

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 13/10/2025 15:27

RawBaby · 13/10/2025 13:26

If someone can reach over and unlock a 'fully locked' gate (as in, with a key?), and you have a broken utility room door that is always open then I think you need to rethink your security, if it bothers you that someone was able to come into your garden and leave a package inside your house.

Absolutely this. Put a padlock on the gate for starters.

YouMightLikeCats · 13/10/2025 15:28

Mn does seem to have a disproportionate terror of delivery men.

according to mumsnet a delivery driver can walk unannounced into your home like it’s no big deal.

This MN person is pretty fickle!

TrickyD · 13/10/2025 15:29

I’m amazed that he took so much trouble to deliver your parcel. Be grateful!

Amazon are fine for us and know where we like our stuff put, but Evri just do a quick doorbell ring and bugger off, taking the parcel. Sometimes they leave a card.

💯 this

Flakey99 · 13/10/2025 15:32

If you live in rural Ireland, I’d say this was completely normal. 😂

When we were renting many years ago, I used to drop the monthly rent in cash off at the landlords house. He also had a broken door on his conservatory at the back and we used to leave the cash in an envelope on the table inside. 😱

Notagain75 · 13/10/2025 15:32

Perhaps he has delivered to that house before and that's where the previous owners had their deliveries.
I don't see why it's creepy

henlake7 · 13/10/2025 15:33

I dont think its creepy...it makes sense they are going to try and find the safest place on your property (without actually entering said property!).
However they are taking a chance....that you dont have a large angry dog the other side of the gate!

You can go onto the DPD website and leave very detailed instructions as to where you want a parcel leaving - with pictures.

I had to do this after several DPD drivers chucked parcels over our side gate because that is where sat navs say the house is or say they couldn't deliver the parcel!

You should be able to get to the right page on the website from the confirmation text or email you were sent about the delivery.

Tolkienista · 13/10/2025 15:47

Yes, YABU.
You're overthinking it.

usedtobeaylis · 13/10/2025 15:55

Delivery drivers just can't do right for doing wrong. Just make sure you have clear delivery instructions.

GalaxyOfCheese · 13/10/2025 16:02

Surely the rule of thumb is if it’s locked then you don't go in. Unless you have specific instructions.

YANBU OP. I wouldn't like it.

MaurineWayBack · 13/10/2025 16:28

I suspect that’s what he was told to do by the previous occupant….
