Not really an AIBU, just wondering who you are in this situation as we’re on a car journey and discussing it.

There’s two lanes of traffic, clearly signed that one lane is going to close off. The left lane is backed up and barely moving causing a big backup, while people fly up the right lane and force their way in at the front, thus saving themselves 15 mins of queuing, but also adding time to the people queuing by forcing their way in front.

We were in the left lane, queuing as I see proper, but also feeling the appropriate rage towards the people flying past us. The car in front of us doing a lot of head shaking and wanker signs towards the queue cutters.

When we got to the front of the queue, DH let some of the cars in. I would have written off my car trying to not let them in.

So, do you queue or would you be a right laner? And do you let them in?
YABU - take the right lane and go past the queue and save time
YANBU - queue like a civilised person but add time on your journey

Interesting difference between the poll and comments, thought it would have been 100% YABU according to comments.

Oh well, I’m still not letting any of you in.

You are still wrong though. It's people like you that make driving such a nightmare these days. If people drove properly, traffic would move a lot more smoothly.

I am amazed almost everyone here understands zip and merge yet irl everyone seems to queue and hate on me for zip merging

ShinyAppleDreamingOfTheSea · 12/10/2025 16:52

Depends if I’m in a hurry or not. Often I’m running late so I’ll be cheeky and take the outside lane. Other times I’ll queue patiently and curse those I see as trying to push in.

They aren’t pushing in though are they. They are correctly merging

wildeflowers · 12/10/2025 17:50

When you see the sign, you merge. Just like any other traffic sign. Not when you feel like it, not when it gives you advantage like cutting in the front. You do it when you see the sign. Those that ignore it to get ahead are massive jerks.

Totally agree! I'd say about 80% sit in the queue. The abuse I get sometimes for merging properly is unbelievable!

DrPrunesqualer · 12/10/2025 17:55

I’m a use both lanes then merge when required to do so

What sign do you mean?

You do realise it wouldn't be a 15 minute queue if everybody (quite correctly) used the closing lane to its max capacity and merged correctly?

I despair.

I always imagine the people who behave like the OP when there are lane closures are also the irritating people sitting in the middle lane of the motorway.

swingingbytheseat · 12/10/2025 17:58

The space is there on the right hand side, so use it.

Spot the Audi drivers on this thread. 😂

QuantumLeek · 12/10/2025 18:02

Poor op raging at the people doing it right!

Youcancallmeirrelevant · 12/10/2025 18:04

It's called a zipper merge they are doing nothing wrong, and yes the insurance claim would likely be against you if you failed to allow a car to merge and the point the lane closes

PumpkinSpiceAndEverythingNice · 12/10/2025 12:51

I’m def not in the wrong, I’m turning left at the traffic lights after the merge point. These guys are flying up the right hand lane which would turn right if the road didn’t block off, to then try and also turn left.

Edited

It doesn’t matter what way any of the cars are turning in the future, the point of two lanes is so there are two lines of cars that are taking up less space and not backing up the road.

It’s standard road rules to use both lanes and to merge in turn. They wouldn’t put two lanes if they weren’t meant to be used.

Youre acting like they’re mounting the pavement and racing in front of you.

GoldBalonz · 12/10/2025 18:30

Merge in turn op, and use the closing lane right up to the point of closure.

I always chuckle at the huge lane of absolute plebs sitting and waiting ages whilst I glide right to the merge point and barely wait...especially the ones looking furious and giving you the finger 😂 If they knew the highway code they wouldn't be in that position.

This !

We have a road like this near us. It starts at a roundabout where a very busy dual carriageway disgorges cars from both directions onto the start of another dual carriageway which, after about half a mile, becomes a single carriageway. If stupid misguided drivers don’t use the proper merging system and block the vehicles in the right hand lane, or even worse, straddle the two lanes the jam goes back to the first roundabout and blocks the slip roads off the original dual carriageway.

You have put the captions incorrectly for the voting choice. In this situation, you were supposed to zipper merge. By not doing so, and by not allowing other people to do so, then you are contributing to the left lane traffic jam and the resulting additional time.

IndoorVoice · 12/10/2025 19:41

Myoldbear · 12/10/2025 13:15

Of course it's right to use the right lane as well as the left.

The only reason I don't is because I'd feel stressed.

Yes, I think the people that are twats (not all!) in the left-hand lane and don’t understand zipper merging put off other people that do understand the highway code as they know they’re going to quite likely encounter aggression or refusal to let them merge.

Elektra1 · 12/10/2025 20:34

In this situation I try to turn in well before the actual funnel neck. When I’m at the front of the queue and those who’ve chanced their arm going right up to the last possible point try to turn in, I will let one or two in, because who really cares about a couple of extra minutes on their journey? It literally does not matter. When people do that thing of inching their car forward to try to stop you getting in I just think “what a dick”. It’s also dangerous on a motorway as an accident could happen with cars coming up faster behind them when they’re totally stationary trying to cut in.

Yes, you're right; this is exactly how I feel.
